I've had strangers stop and complement that my outfits look like I'm telling a story and they love them. I think this is common if you have a good eye for color and pieces that go together?

I definitely do it sometimes. Often times it depends on the situation rather than if I REALLY like what they're wearing. Like if I'm at a coffee shop and I like what the barista is wearing I might tell them if they aren't busy. I never stop people and do it though. :)

I get compliments from coworkers and girls I meet over dinner and game night with my friends. I usually just dress like an office normie. Slim fit button downs and slim fit chinos with bluchers or oxfords. Sometimes a cardigan or sweater over it. 90% of girls don't quite get high fashion, the more normal you dress, the easier it is.

Used to have a big fashion phase when I was a bit younger, and knew that it meant the world to me if someone complimented my fit. If I’m at a party and I catch sight of a guy that’s clearly trying to dress well I’ll typically point out something of his fit and say ‘nice __ bro’. I ditched fashion for fitness and dress pretty basic now, but I always found that compliments from people who didn’t look like they were into fashion were always the more heartening ones, so hopefully I can have a similar effect on other lost boys.

I did buy a blue sweatshirt at a thrift shop with a big patch of Charlie Brown on the front that for some reason attracts a ridiculous amount of compliments. Maybe. I honestly think a large part of it is that I go to a stem school where a solid 2/3 of guys on campus are literally high-functioning autists that dress like children, and most of the rest are the disgusting southern frat guy dixie-prep, so "makes a conscious decision to not look like his mom laid out his clothes for him" is enough to stand out.
For similar reasons, reading a book other than Game of Thrones between classes is so unusual that girls come up and ask about it and talk about how "it's so weird to just, like, see somebody reading." A friend of mine showed me once last year that his female friend had taken a bunch of pictures of me reading in public and put them on snapchat captioned as "attractive white guy." Seeing a girl spill her own spaghetti trying to talk to me after 18 years of the opposite is a weird feeling.
