This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning timepiece.

Gonna wear the festive gold casio to the christmas dinner. I love those little watches.

>> No.13950116

/wt/ is just another thread in a long string of communities on this site that cater to the “bugmen” (don’t like that term but idk what else to call it) who’s personalities consist of what media they consume and what products they buy. Purchasing watches is a not a skill, it’s not a hobby, it’s not something that can be translated into enriching experiences. It goes along well with the other “4chan hobbies” such as:

mechanical keyboards
craft beer
hair product
expensive headphones
fountain pens
marvel movies
video games

They’re not real hobbies. They’re just ways to spend money.

”what’s the most amount of money I can spend that will make me superior to the plebs who haven’t discovered this niche community like I did (20 min ago)???”

I mean, flipping watches is a hobby. Building watches is a hobby. Repairing watches is definitely a hobby. But buying them is not. It’s just an activity that we all like. We’re all just slightly more advanced than the dipshit who browses this thread and determines that he needs a Grand Seiko. The advanced version, of this dipshit, by the way, is the richer dipshit who buys the empirically boring IWC shitter.

These threads is just a crowd-sourced machine that allows people to verify that they have the right opinions, the right tastes. It’s not a hobby. It’s barely even an interest. It’s just a way for us to spend money. But spend money with the approval of other people who have been suckered into spending money to impress other (anonymous) suckers. No one will ever recognize your Stowa Marine. No one you meet in real life will ever know what a Sinn is. The only people who will are other anons.

The only watch that will catch anyone’s eye is a Patek, and you didn’t need to waste hours and hours on this thread to figure that out.

Agree, it's just buying cool shit and talking about it, or discussing stuff to figure out what you want or should get. You can add some /o/ discussion to the list.
But who cares? It's fun to talk and learn about watches. It doesn't need to be a hobby.
And the people who think it's a real hobby are probably the fags who think their watch is a great investment.

Stale reddit pasta, but I'll offer an alternative.

I enjoy these threads because I get to see watches I'd never have known existed before. Not only the Seagull 1963 (which I first saw in a compilation pic of lots of chinese stuff), but also the rare quartz ones by the collector (he's the Anon with the watch that you water), and of course all the random watches that we see from watch repair Anon and others. Furthermore, I learn a great deal, like from the Accutron specialist Anon who recently got that Russian 'version'.

I've never considered buying something as a hobby; quite rightly, buying something is consumerism, whether for good or ill. Watches for me only have value in terms of what experiences I've had with the watch. Births, deaths, extreme risk-taking, and moments I could have died. These things make my watches far more enjoyable to me than knowing that other people covet them or are jealous of my fortune in life.

The wonderful thing about communities like this is that we can come together to talk about things that we like, things that we love, and things that we are passionate about. The encouragement is certainly there of course: that this could be seen as a method to encourage people to spend money on things that are worthless (like diamonds, for instance).

But watches serve a purpose in our world, and to me still (regardless of the digital revolution). A mechanical watch represents centuries of human ingenuity attacking a single problem: how to quantify something that is infinite. That is a beautiful thing to me, and the solution has different forms of elegance and finesse.

Merry Christmas Anons. Thanks for this past year...looking forward to the next.

It's a known fact that you can't even slip a pussy hair between Rolex's tight end links and lugs due to the perfect fitment. Seiko fanboys want talk about finishing but the Japs can't even get their tolerances right.

You can also get the GMT special edition for around the same price which look amazing with the textured dial. For the omegas, I think the railmaster looks pretty cool.
