I'm with you on this. Pure traditionalism misses the major part of neofolk which addresses the post World War crisis of identity with a sense of romance.
And I agree with you again on the part of race not being the primary factor of a neofolk aesthetic. I, for one, would like to see what the Japanese neofolk look might be.

With that said, how could one interpret the neofolk aesthetic through an American lens? Does anyone have examples of this being done effectively?

Too purely traditional but I see where you're comin' from with this. Good for inspiration, but when I'm asking for examples of American Neofolk being 'done' effectively, I mean that I'm interested in seeing a completed modern fit. Hopefully one that wouldn't come off as too distincly British either.

Japanese lens is very very obvious. Ero Guro, Suehiro Maruo, Yamamoto Takato, Mishima (I'm especially thinking of the boys in The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea and all of Confessions of a Mask).

I think Americans lacks the divine whose loss needs to be mourned. The closet equivalent I find is Southern Gothic.

And you might be right with Americans lacking that sense of divine loss. That's especially true in the aftermath of WWII: the U.S. was too drunk on it's victory and the idea that it was the unequivocal hero in that conflict.
That's probably why neofolk acts in the United States tend to draw from single sets of European sensibilities (either dressing in classical British-looking garb as in the case of In Gowan Ring, or dressing like German futurists like Et Nihil).
