A young artist with few possessions lives in a simple and dilapidated but acceptable space, they are not distracted by trappings of wealth or material success
They live in a space conducive to creativity
Its comfy, its functional, you can imagine waking up with a breeze from the large open windows on your face, warm under that comforter with streaks of Saturday morning sunshine reaching through, everything just a little damp

Working with a tiny bedroom. Should I opt for a bed roll on the floor or this trifold futon?

Comfort factor is probably about the same, supposedly the futon is very firm. Cons: bed roll is on the floor, cleanliness, rolling it up every day; futon isn't exactly elegant, but the perfect width for the space I have.

These things make me uncomfortable, it feels very inauthentic, atleast to me. It's like you're a hipster Patrick Bateman, like some interior design store told you this is what your apartment should look like. Really looks exactly like every arrangement in ever interior design store. I like some of the things though, the rightmost plant and lamp are nice. The blanket on your sofa and the whole lower bookcase is great. But maybe think about putting some more personality into your apartment? I respect your effort though, keep at it!

but you should try to limit the amount of other textiles in the room, so go for more wood and simple/minimalist design patterns to contrast the soft nature of the carpet, especially if it's grey or so

if you want to look more at contemporary design than historical, youll have to turn to blogs and magazines. unfortunately most of them fall into categories like martha stewart DIY for boomers, target and ikea shopping for millenials that just bought their first home, or soft filter IG pics with listicles. few actually specialize in taking a look at design as an art and discipline in and of itself. design-milk.com is one of the few good ones. frame and coveted are decent magazines (ive only looked through their print mags, havent looked at their online content)

other fun places to lurk are auctions (like 1stdibs.com) and grad student work. look up design schools like pratt or risd and browse the student work and exhibitions. if youre looking at MFA projects youre about as close to the bleeding edge of design as you can get. these students will eventually work for design firms, open their own studios, work for architects, they even might even be hired by target to design knockoff midcentury modern. have fun anon

Feel like I don't have any room in my room, getting a new desk helped but still kinda claustrophobic in here.

Any tips for utilizing space better?

>> No.13745833

>>13745557
thats pretty insipid advice.

first, theyre going to need places to look. the response i gave was more detailed but people need to look more places than inspo threads on /fa/. the same pictures are reposted all the time. lets say someone even wanted to look up a sofa in one of the pictures here. and they just google 'leather sofa wooden arms.' thats going to get them nowhere if they're looking for a sofa made in the french "empire" style. having a historical and cultural grasp of furniture and design history will make even google keyword searches have tons more depth than just passively looking at photos dumped from an anons folder

second, what you find aesthetically pleasing can be expanded and focused if you grasp the historical context of design and production. what was bauhaus reacting to and what was their intention behind their design? learning that makes apartment hunting or thinking about the use of your space much different than just wandering around target and saying "this looks good. this looks good too." you could find bauhaus and french colonial design both aesthetically pleasing, but your room will end up confused if you blindly throw items together. of course you shouldnt buy something designer just because just because "it's ~designer~" but designers often have principles or focus in their work that is illuminating to learn and know

this has equivalence in other artistic design as well. takahiro miyashita for example, under number (n)ine and his new label the soloist, has historical grounding that is rare. his last collection for number (n)ine included new interpretations of cloaks, breeches, and other 18th century european clothes. if you follow and learn his work closely, you'll see influence from european romantic and gothic periods as well. you are missing out on a lot if you just decide to generalize all "designer" work as brandwhoring and paying for logos

No, what you are talking about is just experience.

Yes you should look at websites and pintrest and read wiki etc, but ultimately that is just consuming information.

You should still buy what you like and over time develop your taste and horizons.

One of my favourites in the thread. I think it's an original arrangement. You brought in some items that I didn't expect to work so well with the surroundings, and it's nice to see minimalism used as a back drop rather than the focal point. I think it's more comfortable to be surrounded by objects you like than a blank canvass. Comfort should be the most important thing if you're living in a place, in my opinion, and whatever makes us comfortable is different from person to person. Good job!

Start with some plants, maybe a floor plant beside the shelf in the fourth pic.
Also some wall shelves, good storage and feels more homey. Personally I'd put them above your desk or above the storage unit in the second pic.
Also, get more paintings/posters and place them where they look nice. The one above your desk is not even centered and it would looks so much better if it was.

Communist architecture was never meant to make you feel comfy of connected, it's meant to make you feel small and oppressed as if you were nothing in front of the giant which is the government. Pic related, the building is actually pretty small but it always feels like its looming over you.

I'm 6'2 and I get no head support unless I slouch down in them. I would say that a chair where you can't sit upright isn't well designed from an ergonomic perspective. Armrests have weird placing and don't work for me at all.

Wegner's oxchair and wingchair are far better in terms of comfort and craftsmanship. Beauty is subjective though, and I will admit the Eames chair looks really good. I just don't think its a very good chair and it is massively overrated.

Commies loved brutalism,

Corberó's residence is awesome but don't oversell it.

You clearly have an academic obsession with concrete, but try to remember that people have to actually work and live in these buildings. The vast vast majority of people prefer comfort over accolades.

Imagine trying so hard to be an elitist that you try to sit bolt upright in a LOUNGE chair.

I can't imagine any chair would be comfy to sit like that with a footstool, it sounds incredibly uncomfortable.

Eames chairs are definitely overrated, but they are comfy.

I would tell you to try relax next time you see one, but clearly you are pretending not to know how to sit in a chair as part of some superiority complex.

> remember that people have to actually work and live in these buildings. The vast vast majority of people prefer comfort over accolades.

no shitt, im not saying that brutalism or concrete is that good (either for urban planning or environmental reasons) i was arguing against
>Sorry Carl M., communism failed along with its shitty architecture. Literally looks like the inside of a mall parking garage.
concrete is cold, hard, and unsustainable and i try to avoid it like the plague for my own projects, but shitting on brutalism is still a little harsh, i mean metabolism and brutalism arnt that different either

What do you think the Ottoman is for? A place for your dirty laundry? Try sitting upright in a lounge chair with your feet on a footstool and tell me how "well designed" it is from an "ergonomic perspective". You're literally a sitting L.

Do you also buy sandals and wonder why your feet are getting cold while wearing them in the winter and then complain that things that you put on your feet are supposed to keep you warm?

this is just excessive. You don't get points for having three fucking eames chairs in one room.
