I'll be starting off with The Thin White Duke. A hollow man, obsessed with romance despite feeling nothing. An aristocrat driven mad transforming into an emotionless Aryan superman, subscribing to fascism.

Through Duke, Bowie expressed his beliefs with little to no hesitation. Seeming hung up on the idea of moral decadence plaguing the West.

>"It makes you want to shoot yourself – it's very demoralising. I think we should maybe strengthen up a bit."
>"I think the morals should be straightened up for a start. They're disgusting. This whole particular period of civilisation ... it's not even decadent. We've never had true decadence yet. It borders on Philistine, really."
>"If you, like me, believe the current morality... or the signals for each morality really... are pushed by an established power or, media... well, it's really just another way of suppressing or ridiculing the working man, so he has less to look up to in his own life."
>"I mean, to put on pornographic movies in a truly free society is one thing; to put on pornographic movies in America is very dangerous because it intimidates and ridicules the average family man. He watches himself being portrayed six inches tall on TV every night, and he wakes up the next morning and he feels six inches tall, he thinks he is six inches tall."

It's unclear when Bowie's transition to Duke began. However, you can see influences in terms of appearance and what not around the closing of his blue-eyed-soul era, heading into The Man Who Fell To Earth.

>"'Somebody Up There Likes Me' is a 'Watch out mate, Hitler's on his way back'... it's your rock and roll sociological bit."
>"'Fascination'? There's not much I can say really, it's pretty self-explanatory. . ." And Bowie fades away ... pauses ... comes back. "Like over here, it's bright young Americans, you know, the lilting phrase before the crashing crescendo. In England it's a dirge – the days are all grey over there. It's a bit worrying.
>"Like that uncertainty stretches from where I am to where you are. There's literally no economic confidence in any one nation in the world. There's not one confident central source anywhere on this whole damn planet."

For those wondering, I'm finding the quotes from Bowie's 1975 interview titled; Adolf Hitler And The Need For A New Right.
It's a favorite of mine. It exemplifies The Thin White Duke's persona combined with the excessive cocaine consumption.
After Duke, I'll post inspo from the Berlin era. I'm going for obtainable looks rather than some of his earlier androgynous glam stuff from Ziggy Stardust.

>"So what's the next step?"
>"Dictatorship," says Bowie. "There will be a political figure in the not too distant future who'll sweep this part of the world like early rock and roll did."
>"You probably hope I'm not right. But I am. My predictions are very accurate ... always."
>"You've got to have an extreme right front come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up. Then you can get a new form of liberalism."
>"There's some form of ghost force liberalism permeating the air in America, but it's got to go, because it's got no foundation at all, apart from a set of laws that were established way back in the bloody '50s and early '60s and have no bearing at all in the '70s. (The Supreme Court in America was at its most liberal in the late '50s, early '60s.)"
>"So the best thing that can happen is for an extreme right Government to come. It'll do something positive at least to the cause commotion in people and they'll either accept the dictatorship or get rid of it."
>"It's like a kaleidoscope," says Bowie. "No matter how many little colours you put in it, that kaleidoscope will make those colours have a pattern ... and that's what happens with TV – it doesn't matter who puts what in the TV, by the end of the year there's a whole format that the TV put together. The TV puts over its own plan."

Influenced by Stardust Cowboy, Bowie began to develop his unnamed persona. Further seeking inspiration from Japanese designers. Borrowing from Stardust Cowboy and a local tailor's shop, Bowie settled on Ziggy Stardust. Unlike Duke, Ziggy sought out to deliver a message of hope through communicating peace and love. But in the end, Ziggy's corrupted by hedonism; leading to his demise.

>“Ziggy is advised in a dream by the infinite's to write the coming of a starman … this amazing spaceman who will be coming down to save the Earth."
>“Ziggy starts to believe in all this himself and thinks himself a prophet of the future starmen. He takes himself up to the incredible spiritual heights and is kept alive by his disciples. When the infinites arrive, they take bits of Ziggy to make themselves real, because in their original state they are anti-matter and cannot exist on our world. And they tear him to pieces onstage during the song ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide.'”

Here's something interesting. This is Halloween Jack, a reoccurring figure on the Diamond Dogs album. It's one of his lesser known personas. >Bowie's relationship with Ava Cherry.
She was introduced to Bowie through her manager at an after show party.
He complimented her image, her hair in particular, and she assumed the worst.
After

Ava Cherry became friends with Bowie after briefly meeting at a party. Rather than introducing himself properly, Bowie complimented her hair. Knowing she was a singer, Bowie invited her to join him on his Tokyo tour. That tour being cancelled due to Bowie catching the flu. Here's the thing; Ava had quit her job, told everyone about the tour, and was "abandoned" by Bowie. She booked a trip to Monaco, claiming she'd do anything in order to see David. She wound up in Paris, modelling along the way. She wouldn't find Bowie for another eight months, chasing him down and sneaking into a special access club. Lurking in the stairwell, Bowie spotted her but was delighted to reunite. After apologizing, Bowie took her with him and their relationship took off.

They were intensely in love. Ava claiming that Bowie "loved the chocolate." Then, once again, Bowie ditched Ava after returning to London. Bowie reached out to her, bringing her over to London where they romantically took where they left off and the rest is history.

From the Right recordings. Bowie collaborated with Luther Vandross, Ava Cherry, and Robin Clark. The recording sessions were difficult, complex, and tiring. Bowie was a perfectionist and didn't accept mediocrity. If something wasn't how he envisioned it, he'd scrap everything to start from the bottom. In spite of his attitude, Bowie and the crew went onto finishing Young Americans quicker than what was expected.

Thank you. It's recommended to begin with Hunky Dory or Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. It shouldn't be difficult to find your place in his discography from that point on. I'll dump a couple of starter tracks from his 70's work. That being said, don't dismiss the Berlin Trilogy. It's an amazing set but I could see why you'd be turned off if that's your first experience with Bowie. Blackstar is a must listen too. Everything from the 80's-2000's is a hit or miss for some. Although I liked Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) and Let's Dance.

You're welcome. I'm glad this thread has garnered some interest and has a few contributors aside from me. Here, from the same photo-shoot. There's one more but it's not in color. Don't know if the Stan Smiths were intentional or Bowie happened to own a pair, probably the former.

damn now I really see the resemblance Duncan Jones has with him. I know he already hates his mother for never being apart of his childhood (how do you manage to be a worse parent than Bowie at his peak?) but if David Bowie was my father and her genetics held me back from looking like him I'd be furious

Spectacular thread, OP. I've been listening intermittently to Bowie for ages, but I only really got into him about a year ago when I heard the full lengths of David Bowie (1967, not 1969) and Station to Station.

I've got a couple scholarly articles on him. I'll post screenshots of the cover pages, and I'll link up the full files if anyone responds.

You'll find a variety of references to the supernatural in Hunky Dory

You'll find references to the paranormal sprinkled throughout Hunky Dory. He was interested in the supernatural for a large sum of his life. I mean, it's the same guy who stored his urine in his refrigerator after a run-in with wizards who stole urine. His closing album, Blackstar, is filled to the brim with esoteric symbolism.

I don't think it stemmed from cocaine. Hunky Dory was '71. Around that time, Bowie had only smoked pot once in awhile. He'd be introduced to cocaine and other "hard" drugs around '72.
