So this coleus i bought isn't doing too well. :(

Any idea what it could be unhappy about? I water it whenever I feel the soil dry, could I be over watering?

Is digging up and stealing tiny tropical trees I find behind my parents' house effay? Any idea what it (the one that kind of looks like a palm) is? I'm in Florida.

>> No.13608392

I live in a shitty, dark, cold climate and i'm currently in the asscrack of winter. My favourite indoor plant, the monstera deliciosa is suffering so bad and i got no clue what I can do for it. I put it next to my window as much as possible to give it the light it needs, since all it's leaves haven't gotten their 'swiss cheese' holes yet, but I'm afraid the cold draft coming from the window is making it sad. It seems to pick up a bit once i water it and leave it close to the window on a rare sunny day, but every other day it's just... sad... and wilting.

I even keep my heater on in my room to get it warm. I'm wondering if I should get a humidifier in my room? Would this help with all my indoor plants?
Also I'm wondering if I should repot it, since it's pot is just a small terracotta pot that is easy to move around and keep in the small space i have.
Should I just put it out of it's misery and give it to someone who lives in Sydney?
Thanks,
ausfag

>>13608392
Depends, where do you live and how cold are we talking?

It sounds like it's a tropical plant, so it might just need some more misting to simulate humidity and to be kept somewhere warmer. Google implies it's fine at 18C. Lot of factors at play, but I doubt you would need to repot it. I wouldn't go to the lengths of getting a humidifier (keeping in mind I'm a novice gardener of course), I'd just make sure you are watering it properly and maybe mist the leaves with a spray bottle once a day or every other day even

So I have a Northwest and Southwest facing window. I know south windows tend to be extreme sunlight, but how do these two tend to go togrther?

>> No.13609827

>>13607600
With the Coleus you should keep the ground moist, not too wet though. It likes a lot of indirect light. I see a window so could it experience some cold draught maybe?

>> No.13609869

>>13609295
not sure what you're asking exactly, but it's almost impossible to give an indoor plant too much light if it's coming through windows.

>> No.13609924

>>13609827
I moved it into that window today to see if it does better. It isn't too cold right now where I live, so I don't think it's getting a super cold draft or anything. I think the water might be the culprit, since I tend to water it pretty heavily and letting it fully dry.

Cheers, anon. I'll make it better yet.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try. Maybe find a place for it close to the window and the heater so it gets some even heat and light.
I get worried about 'misting' it because I don't want to get water on my furniture, plus it sits near my record player and book shelf.
Where I live it's usually the coldest in the state, we get to -4ºc overnight.

Black spots on the stem/trunk is usually an indication of a disease (usually root rot) although I don't know the exact type of plant it is so I can not help you too much...

Anyways, could you by chance also hang it up so that the light will still hit it but it won't get fucked by a draft?

I grew up around dozens of pots of fake flowers. They are terrible. No matter the quality it is always apparent even when you aren't looking to tell that they are replica of the real thing and once noticed it will stick in visitant's mind that you keep something so gauche as dust collecting faux flowers. Filthy fucking shits, I hate them.

dumb frogposter does have a point, I just don't think you'd enjoy having fake plants around the house. Half of the reason I like all of mine is that they are alive, and I get to interact with them. They bright my day. I feel good when they are doing good, and I feel sad when they aren't doing well.

If you miss the color, you might look into art. Personally, I feel that we really undervalue what good art can add to our lives.

They wilt when they are overwatered, let the soil dry out more between waterings. Also the holes develop on mature plants, young ones wont have any for a while regardless of sun.

I grew these two monsteras from seeds. Also the friend I had keeping my plants fucked up and didn’t keep my nepenthes wet enough. I cut the growing tip off and stuffed it in a jar with some moss. Hopefully he re-roots and is good to go in a couple months. In April he put out his first pitcher but that was gone when I came back in August. Big bummer.

I'm not sure if there's a national nursery chain or not. The one I go to has about 20 in my state only.

Generally has lower quality and less exotic plants than nurseries, but they're cheaper and you can find some good ones in early spring/summer.

Etsy, Hirt's, Amazon, etc. I personally think online plants are grossly overpriced so I would only use this as a last resort.
