I guess it initially stemmed from being self-conscious, but once I stopped dressing objectively shit and started feeling a bit better about myself, I started to really enjoy the small bit of novel expression I could get out of it. I also like to buy well made things in general, fashion or otherwise, which has led me to a better appreciation of which brands are good for what.

i'm a guy and @ 5'5 ~100lbs it's been really hard my entire life finding clothes that fit properly and look ok on me

I used to wear stonewashed jeans two-four inches too long, never cut my hair, t shirts that were a size or two two big AND too short. A nun at my college told me I dressed terrible in a loving way

Much like the state of somebody's car, the clothes they wear tell you everything you'd need to know about them.
For me, fashion is about crafting the perfect disguise, rigging the first impression to my favor. That, and I got sick of getting ripped off in normie stores and started buying designer and have never looked back.
