The JLC Masterquartz has a GP Cal 352. The 352 is a fine movement - basic 32KHz with a stepper motor. I'm not actually clear on whether it was the first 32KHz watch or if Seiko's 35/38 series beat them to it. In any case, it's often highlighted as the first quartz watch with a modern design - 32KHz tuning fork quartz, stepper motor.

The oysterquartz is I'd say a much higher quality watch. Finishing aside (which is also significantly better than the JLC, I'd say), the oysterquartz has a pallet fork escapement and a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator, a much higher-quality movement.

Look like watches from the 40s or so. There were tons of Swiss casing brands that bought movements from FHF, AS, ESA, etc., and cased them up. The brands faded into obscurity and never really had much importance. More interesting would be if you opened them up and identified the movement.

I don't want to sell them because of the emotional value, but I'm interested in the price of them, eventough they wont be expensive because they were pretty poor actually so I don't really think the could afford a 40's rolex haha. Anybody has a bet?

Depends what you mean by best obviously. My favorites would be
> Seiko 9983-7000: 5spy TC movement, textured dial, applied minute markers
> Oysterquartz: as mentioned
> Citizen Crystron 4 Mega: 4.19MHz AT cut watch, specced down to 3spy
> Omega marine chronometer: first marine chronometer certified wristwatch, 2.4MHz AT cut crystal, independent hour hand, second hand adjusts forward or backward
> Modern citizen chronomaster: excellent finishing, eco drive, 5spy, independent hour hand
> Modern seiko springdrive: smooth glide second hand, excellent dials, hands, and indices
There's also a bunch of quartz watches with qualities that aren't important to me, or that are horologically interesting, but not necessarily in a good way.

>>13545648
>I'm interested in the price of them
I have no idea what they would have cost in the 40s, but today they will be worth next to nothing. A fair price, if they're in good working order, is probably in the $30-50 range, although if the movements are uncommonly good it might be more.

>> No.13545679

>>13545658
The Springdrive doesnt count to me. Very cool tecnology but not on the same accuracy level of the others i think.

I forgot about the Citizen... looks like a great deal...

I was thinking "best" as best quality, durability and accuracy of the movement mainly. Obviously a great watch in that regard is supposed to have a decent case etc...

If it were me I'd shoot for a 168.017 constellation in a C case with a cal 564. The genta case has the higher tier chronometer movement with seamaster like aesthetics. If you can't be bothered to do the research to get an all original one from eBay, you could try to buy from a trusted dealer like kaba on watchexchange; you'll pay a premium over no-name eBay sellers but way better than the store that was charging you 1500usd for a cal 502.

Very much sounds like he means the case is stamped, i.e. old style shitty watch clasps or an AK receiver, not that he means stamped as in stamping written text into it.

I really don't understand what he means, it's surely impossible that the Submariner case is anything other than milled.

I was very impressed with the chronomaster finishing when I saw them in person. It's been a while since I looked at 9f pieces, but compared to by sbga001 spring drive GS, I preferred the case finishing on the chronomaster. The GS hands were certainly nicer than the citizen hands, although the citizen hands were still excellent. The dials and indices were roughly on par - maybe a slight edge to GS on the indices.

Fair enough. The generic 9f models are 10spy though.

The issue is that, especially in the modern swiss market, there are generally very diminishing returns in the 500usd to 3000usd or so range, with few exceptions, and especially in terms of movement quality. I don't see a lot of point buying a longines, for example, when generally Hamilton and Tissot contain substantially the same movements.

You could consider baume & Mercier if your goal is to have a watch that will impressive people - it will hold more esteem than a Hamilton and you can probably get one used for 1000usd - but it will likely have a worse movement, or at best on par, with a Hamilton intramatic. Until you start looking at Omega, Cartier, Rolex, jlc, piaget, Tudor, etc. in the modern swiss market, you're just not getting a lot for your dollars above the basic brands.

You should try to get a watch you can be proud and enjoy for life or spend a lot less than 1000€ and make do with whatever until you research and document enough to choose what you really like.

There are very nice watches for less than 2000€. Even there are a few around 1000€.

Yeah, this, I never understand people who want to spend four figures in a watch and haven't done any research into what they want, and just ask on 4chan what they should buy.

Vostok Amphibia, swapped out the bezel for a Seiko bezel with black insert and upgraded the strap to a metal link not made of Soviet pot metal. These are unique as dive watches in that the dome is an epoxy based plastic rather than a rigid crystal; it's intentionally designed to flex under pressure. As pressure on the exterior increases, the dome flexes and flattens out, expanding into the crevices of the case and preventing water entry.
