From a perspective of its historical significance to the history of the watchmaking art? Yes.

From a purely technical perspective? No. Column wheel chronographs are harder to make and more aesthetically pleasing than cam actuation, but it's really the choice of vertical vs horizontal coupling that has the larger influence on technical excellence, and in a tool watch a cam actuated set-up is more robust against shocks.

If you want the technically best chronograph ever used in a Speedmaster, that's the Lemania 5100.

Abrasives with clearly listed grit ratings like jewelers rouge compounds, diamond pastes, diamond sprays, etc.

And generally, unless you have really big scratches I would try to stick to compounds of around 4 micron or less to avoid removing too much material.

>> No.13532917

>>13532912
You're better off using a soft microfiber cloth and doing all polishing manually.

Buffing wheels tend to create 3D surface distortion and have a very high risk to round over case edges if you aren't extremely careful. Better to avoid those risks by doing it manually unless you have access to a lapping machine and know how to use it.

>> No.13532921

So something like this:

https://www.eternaltools.com/diamond-polishing-paste

Plus a random microfiber cloth and I'm good to go?

>> No.13532928

>>13532921
Yeah, those will work.

If you are going to polish a surface, remember that any surface damage you don't fully remove with the coarsest grit you are using will not be removed afterwards by finer compounds.

For example, if you use the 6 micron paste in that set to remove some scratches, make sure you achieve the levels of results you intend to achieve before you start switching to 3 micron and 1 micron, because these finer abrasives will cut so much slower than the first abrasive that they will be impractical for removing any scratches you didn't get with the first grit.

also, don't go finer than 1 micron unless you are aiming to create a spooky mirror level of polish. A hand applied 0.25 micron finish on steel will, if fully applied, essentially be spookily reflective.

It's sketchy because precision grading matters a lot with this stuff. Lazy grading means you might grab a tube of 6 micron and find much larger and smaller abrasive particles in it. Bad juju.

You only consider the option of paying thousands of dollars for a single watch. I see the appeal of appreciating design (mostly unchanged in fakes) with a watch that usually lasts plenty of years. Maybe its not super duper 500m diver or some might break on an airplane.
My father has owned two 100-200 dollar fake chronos from IWC and a Choppard. They are lasting 5+ years and counting.

Are luxury watches a meme? I mean I'm really into high horology, but can't stop thinking that most people are fucking retarded to spend thousands of dollars on an object which in most cases is used as a status symbol.

Shouldn't luxury watches be treated the same way expensive original paintings are? i.e. you only buy one when you're set for life and can't think of anything else to waste your money on, otherwise that 10k you spent on a Rolex to show how fucking rich you are when you're actually not could've been invested into something to save you from being a wageslave for the rest of your life

Live a little.

Let's say you make a meager $40,000 a year, a Sub is around 1/4th of that and will last you 20+ years very, very easily. Considering the purchase as a percentage of your earnings over that timeframe it's a drop in the bucket considering it's something you got to use and enjoy every day. Plus consider the fact that it'll have in all likelyhood either held its value or increased its value, so in reality the enjoyment was merely a store in value rather than an expenditure.

Wear your watch beside your wrist bone. Make sure that the face sits right next to the bone on the outside of the wrist (the ulna). the visibility is quite clearly the issue here. in my picture, had i worn my watch where it belongs, it would not be visible as my sleeve would have covered up a solid portion of the watch face. i therefore made a (((calculated))) decision to pull my watch closer to my wrist so i can get a full shot of the watch face.

In terms of functionality, no way. You bought one of the best pieces of horological significance on the market.

In terms of form, yes. It's a horrible design. I can never love the subdial layout but at least the stainless cases you could rock every day. Two tone is 99/100 times disgusting. You don't fall into the 1%

Then I realised this is a larp to gauge reactions prepurchas. Don't buy it

PSA for Speedmaster Profesional owners: If you bought your watch with the metal bracelet remember that the pins that come with it are not meant to be used with straps.

You should have been provided with another set of pins that are about 1mm longer to use with anything other than the bracelet. The extra 1mm provides greater pressure against the lugs thus making it more secure.

In the meantime I'm thinking of picking up some fun straps for it for summer. Currently have an 18mm dress leather brand on if from some cheap watch I had when I was a kid. Anyone tried the tropics from cheapest nato straps? They say they're from the original molds. How about seatbelt natos?
