Held them both, the pushers of the new daytona feel flimsy to say the least and the action feels cheap. Would still love to have an older one, but the Speedmaster wins if the brandname didn't matter. It looks and feels so much more like a quality toolwatch. Of course nobody uses a watch as a tool anymore, so it's all status, marketing and nostalgia.

I will agree to this 100% having also handled them both. But I want to add that the movement in the daytona is more modern, plus it's automatic. But then again, the 1861 (particularly 1863) is much prettier to look at.

But you're buying a watch and not wearing it. That's a huge waste of money. Especially when you aren't in an environment where a formal watch fits every now and then.

Watches over a thousand in general are a bit like that, but this is like buying a nice car and leaving it in the garage forever, not even taking it out to track days.

I suggest that you at least wear it in conditions where you won't grind away bits of the watch during your warehouse work.

That model will have much better external fit and finish than an SRPB model. SBDx tier Seikos have their cases and bracelets made in the same supply chain as Grand Seiko, though non GS models of course don't (normally) get as much zratsu polishing or quite as much finishing work.

Because the money is in the labor not the material. Knives and forks can be mass produced in an automated way requiring little to no manual finishing work, while stainless steel watch cases still require the polishing and brushing to applied manually, particularly on more upscale watches.

Also most watch cases are machined using CNC machines (even stamped blanks require machining afterwards) while basic cutlery can be stamped and then have automated finishes applied to it.

Well the watch I've had my eye on as "the one", ticks all my boxes is this Armani "Steel strap watch" (as its called on the website).
+stainless steel band (i have eczema so I need non allergic unlike nickle and wont give indian burn like leather and silicone)
+relatively minimalist face with no numbers, sans the date
+black face and band
+markings in white/reflective metal for high contrast
AU$ 529

Like I said, I am pretty much a normie, so I don't know what makes a good watch and whether this actually is a good watch. I don't particularly mind the price IF the watch is good, I don't want to spend hundreds just for a brand name.

You don't get a lot of watch for the money if you buy "armani" watches. You can find plenty of watches in this style that are actually decent watches. I think what you want is either some kind of eta watch or something. Do you care about the watch being quartz or automatic?

ETA is the movement, you don't get much by just googling "ETA", but try

Google these 3 different ref numbers (these are 3 watch models I think look kinda like the one you posted) and these are better than anything Armani will give you:

T101.407.11.051.00

05-5287.04.007

T101.451.11.051.00

The last one is quarz, and might be what you want in terms of movement, if you don't even know or care about what "automatic" is. It is also the most precise of the three.

>> No.13514990

>>13514970
Oh and to be clear, the last one (T101.451.11.051.00) is also the one I recommend for a normie like you. It's a good quartz movement from ETA and the watch looks good and simple, I believe it's similar to what you want, also in my opinion it looks much better than the armani watch aesthetically, but that part is personal I guess.

Main point is that it's quartz. This means you only need to care about changing the battery every 5-10 years (closer to 10). I
f you buy a mechanical watch like the first of the three, it will need servicing by a watchmaker from time to time, because he will have to tinker with the movement to make it go smooth.
