I literally came looking for this kind of thread.

OK, so let me get this straight;

1: The developer and powder plus water themselves do the bleaching, right? The toner is just color? If I like the color, do I have to use toner?

2: My hair is very dark brown - not black, but the color of milk chocolate. I've read that 20V developer can 'lift' by two shades. This leads into #3;

3: Even if it only gets lighted one shade, will the result be red/orange? I'm trying to get red hair, and I'm wondering if I even have to bother with toner because I only want to lighten it enough for the red to really come out.

4: After I lighten it, will henna give me a reddish orange color? Or should I use a toner?

5: Do toners damage your hair?

Get your hair dyed at a salon dude. I've tried time and time again dyeing my hair at home and you simply cannot get the same look as the box. Unless you yourself are a professional stylist (and based off your questions, no insult intended genuinely, I assume you aren't a stylist) just spend more money to get it dyed at a salon.

It might seem like a waste of money, but it will end up looking flat or uneven or you'll miss a few spots, etc, etc. Too much can go wrong when you have no clue what you're doing, no matter how many YouTube tutorials you watch beforehand. It can look okay, passable, but never good if you know what I mean when you do it at home.

I'm basing my expectations on real people I see, not the box. The precise product I'm using is for blond hair, and I'm not trying to get blond hair - I just want to lighten it.

>and based off your questions, no insult intended genuinely, I assume you aren't a stylist

None taken!

>just spend more money to get it dyed at a salon

I'm a poorfag and was given the product by a friend. I could spend maybe $5-10 on toner or henna, but I have equipment, not money.

>Too much can go wrong when you have no clue what you're doing, no matter how many YouTube tutorials you watch beforehand. It can look okay, passable

Based on people I see in person, it looks clearly artificial and very solidly-colored. Bleaching seems to remove the natural highlights and leave the hair a dull color.

I really appriciate your advise, though. I guess I'm just happy with artificial colors.

I mean if you don't mind more flat and unnaturally appearing colors then knock yourself out. I guess I was just assuming that since most people want their fake color (no matter how unnatural the color itself is) to look as if it grew out of their own scalp, that's what you'd be aiming for.
