To those who are more experienced what do you expect to smell from an aesthetic like this?

Personally I think of liquor, burning wood, tobacco, and steel. Would love to find a fragrance like this. Or maybe something less offensive and just a something that straight up smells like cold metal.

Since you posted it in the OP pic and I've seen Kurkdjian a lot around lately, what's the best from his line? And is the price worth it?

Baccarat rouge is indeed sweet pink sugar and cloying saccharine. I have absolutely no idea why it's so hyped by a few people here- must be babby's first niche fragrance. Absolutely god awful.

You’re not making an informed decision, though. You can’t be. Yes, you can look up the notes and read reviews, but you still don’t know exactly how it will smell, not to mention how it will react to your body’s chemistry. You even admit you’ve made bad buys twice, that’s got to be close to 200.00, if not more if they were niche bottles. That’s more than I’ve spent on samples, plus it’s not hard to get samples for free.

You want everyone to think you’re a badass alpha Chad who never second guesses himself and always makes good decisions, but actually you’re just a retard who wastes money. You are not as smart as you think you are.

I'm not that guy earlier and I don't agree with everything he said (definitely the buying of the largest sizes). But on the other hand, I have to say that blind buying isn't always a terrible decision. Today, you have countless of blogs that try to very accurately describe what perfumes smell and feel like, what they're similar to etc. Kafkaesque, certain members from Basenotes etc all give very good comparisons and ideas about fragrances and often recommend them off of similar ones. They might not always end up smelling like described to you personally, but it's a lot more "informed" than simply buying it "blind".

Also, there are circumstances that force one to blind buy. I used to live in London where you could easily pop down the street to Selfridges and smell a fragrance yourself. But for the moment, I'm living in Asia where even designer fragrances are hard to test, and niche houses are unheard of. That makes it nigh impossible to test new releases, when even sample sites cost a fortune for every shipment and a delay of 3 months to boot.

You could be interested in vintage fragrances, like I am, and that makes it impossible to understand what an old formulation or discontinued fragrance smells like- all you have to go by are reviews by others, making non "blind buys" essentially impossible.

You could be getting a large bulk of your collection off of auction sites like eBay, where you catch a good deal but have to decide in an instant whether or not to purchase. You may have seen good reviews of a well known or legendary fragrance but can't afford the luxury of time to go down to a store personally to test it out.

All things considered, of course it's wise to not blind buy, but most importantly I think you have an incredible advantage of being experienced enough in perfume to understand what certain notes smell like; what effect certain structures are and to instantly get a gist when someone likens it to an existing perfume.

Another anon, closing in on 200 blind bought bottles. Thanks for stating my case more eloquently than I would have been able to. >> No.13219948

>>13219691
No, I agree with you, sonetimes you have to buy blind and if you’re experienced enough, you can make more informed choices, I’m just saying you can’t always.

Take Kilian Straight to Heaven Extreme, for example. It’s supposed to have double the vanilla of the original, and a lot of people describe it as being a boozy, fruity, vanilla-heavy, sweet gourmand. I ordered a sample thinking I’d get something like a Serge Lutens type of gourmand scent from having read the notes and the reviews. I did not get that at all. To me, it’s a very fresh, woody, almost astringent scent with very little sweetness and almost no fruit or vanilla. Now, I’ve been into fragrances for years, I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars, I’m pretty educated about fragrances, and what I thought I was getting was completely different from what I got.

This is my point. You can do a ton of research, you can really know your shit, but it’s still far from a sure thing. That’s why it’s a bad idea to buy blind if you can help it, especially when it comes to expensive niche scents.

In the context of this thread in particular, given that it was a complete novice this guy was advising, telling him to buy blind is completely foolish.

On my skin this is nowhere near what the online review descriptions say it is. I mean I detect the vetiver, mahogany wood, and mossy wetness because I know the composition of the fragrance. But I've gotten two female reactions that it smells nice (even one saying it's bright and citrusy).

I would say it has the makeup of the mysterious dark scent people say it is with something that smells like a run of the mill department store fragrance mixed in. Also projection is crazy on me, I did one spray and it just projected outwardly forever.

I'll definitely look into purchasing it because it has a lot going for it, but it's another reason not to trust the fictional hyperbolic reviews from strangers on the net (cough, fragrantica).

What fragrance should I wear to be sexually attractive to Indian women?

It's an absurd question, but my own tastes lean to oudh and rose and musk, and I'm wondering if these notes will be embarrassing or outdated or remind them of their creepy uncle; minus the onion and cumin notes, of course.

The only thing more absurd than asking what fragrances Indian women find sexy is telling someone to be themselves. I'm a total fake who is all things to all men, and it's worked out marvellously.

Got my 50ml of Aventus from "perfumetogo" on eBay. Lot # A4217N01. Comparing a spray from the bottle vs the sample I got from fragrancenet, the bottle seems less smokey. One of my favorite fragances ever. It's polarizing until it gets to the drydown though, so you may not like it. The opening is very herbal/medicinal to the point where it smells almost like gasoline, but more like fresh cut grass and burning rubber, with some citruses and melon notes (from calone and dihydromyrcenol). During the drydown it gets a lot more warm spicy with the nutmeg and then iso-e super gives a fuzzy leathery animalic finish. If this sounds appealing to you then it'll probably be your favorite fragrance ever too.

I think Cuir de Russie takes that spot. Even if you don't like leather and powder, even the diluted modern fragrance stands out in the field of perfume today. The incredible depth and textural quality of the fragrance has always made everyone I show it to stop in their tracks. I'm glad I have a stash of the vintage extrait and EDC.

>>13223921
No, not at all. It's still enchanting but one must keep in mind how different to the original formulation it is. That included oakmoss, making it more Chypre than cologne. It had a bitter structure to it, and the oakmoss stopped it from dying away in 10 minutes like it does now.

Unfortunately, it's in a class of fragrances (hesperidic colognes) that we'll never get to smell the originals again, since all the vintage bottles have likely turned.

Is this an okay fragrance for a guy in his early 30s? I have a hard time finding the right amount of matureness for my age. I can't stand a lot of the younger smelling stuff but don't want to smell too old. Generally I wear Tuscan Leather if in cold weather, and terre d'hermes in fall/spring, and allure sport extreme in the summer. I feel like early 30s is kind of a weird age for fragrances because you don't know what's too mature or too young for you.

Don't listen to the guys before me. By the fireplace is kinda reminiscent of a fire, but it's sweet and nutty. Eros is the opposite to what you wanna smell like. Sauvage is the worst thing to blow up for a while.
Tauer has great stuff, but lonestar memories is a HEAVY leather frag with animalic assets.
Here are some of the most foresty wood perfumes:
Arso by Profumum Roma
Zagorsk by CdG. I mean, cdg has very many good woody scents. The whole incense series (although they dont last too long on skin). The blue series, the monocle series. Dover, Standard, Serpentine.
Resine precieux by Sultan Pasha.

Comme des garcons have the best weird perfumes meant to smell like industrial glue and metal etc. The 2 Odeur scents, 8 88...

There are a million tobacco-heavy scents. I can''t even think of a good one right now. Tobacco vanilla is popular... but sweet.

If you like liquor, smoke, wood and metal you need to get into incense, my man. I think you'd like bois d'ascese by Naomi Goodsir.

Are expensive fragrances worth it?
I used to think a good fragrance is something you shouldn't cheap out on, but then I read about “smell surrogates“ (or something like that, idk)
They're essentially fragrances that smell very similar to designer brand perfumes, but at a fraction of the cost

Are those worth lookimg into or will the cheaper price mean they won't last as long/smell “off“ despite smelling similar/some other downside?

You're thinking of clone fragrances. There are great ones, but I have yet to find one that smells exactly like the thing it tries to copy, but that can be a good thing sometimes. They will fool most most people though. There is a point of going too cheap so those sub $30 ones almost never have any staying power or projection and they smell noticeably cheap.
Ultimately it boils down to whether you want to smell exactly like some expensive fragrance in which case you dish out the cash for it or you can live with a slightly different scent (which you may like even more than the original).

I have both, and you're right that Extreme is a bit cleaner, more streamlined vetiver fragrance. It lacks tobacco and drops the florals that read as old world / barbershop to many. Extreme is sheer green spiced incense, while the original is earthy green tobacco cologne. My personal preference is for the OG as I appreciate its richness and its development. I don't find it dated or old smelling, and it's definitely fresh enough for spring and summer. Extreme is still great, however, and both are an excellent value.

My rotation right now is Margiela Untitled, Rose 31 and Concrete.

I actually really like how many dimensions it seems to have, even though it doesn't change much over time. It's soft and feminine and kind of creamy-sweet, but so artificial (I like that!). I get something kind of rose-y, but not in an overwhelmingly floral way in there. It's very warm on my skin too.
