Literally the only time I found it necessary to wear a balaclava was when I worked in an oilfield near Wamsutter, Wyoming and it was 15 degrees with >20mph wind speeds.

Also, I'm pretty shy, so it feels liberating having my face concealed, and especially moving quickly, where I'm unlikely to have to explain myself. I spend a lot more money on other /k/ stuff to worry about spending $5-10 on a balaclava. I have several. They're very cheap on milsurp sites if you buy them in packs, often only $2-3 per mask. They make good/funny gifts.

I feel beyond faggy wearing scarves, so I only use them in extreme conditions, in combination with a balaclava. They perform a different function than masks, neither is really a good substitute for another.

Scarf + hat:
Pros:
-Warm neck
-You can approach strangers and enter public buildings
-People can see your pretty face

Cons:
-Cold face
-Looks faggy
-Scarf must be loosened/removed to regulate body temperature during physical activity


Balaclava + hat:
Pros:
-Warm face
-Can make you look like a terrorist/criminal
-Can be positioned to uncover face, folded down like a scarf, or folded up like a hat
-Only have to unzip jacket to allow air to cool your neck/chest
-Can remove hat for further cooling while keeping your ears/nose from hurting
-More likely to be made from moisture-wicking materials
-Stows smaller, easier to hang onto when you go indoors

Cons:
-Can make you look like a terrorist/criminal
-Will probably make you look like an autistic retard larping as a terrorist/criminal
-You may alarm people
-Does not warm neck well on its own, your must wear a jacket with a warm, tight-fitting collar

Modular as in, can be worn as neck wrap, can be worn with face exposed, partially covered, or fully covered, can be worn as hat, can be worn without a hat and still have some warmth and ear coverage/wind protection while allowing yourself to shed some heat.

Secure as in it doesn't move much, you aren't having to adjust it to keep cold air from slipping in where it moves around, sags, or loosens (especially around ears and face). I didn't mean to imply a risk of a scarf falling entirely off your person.

I'd say it's not easier to lose as it's either secure on my face or secure inside a pocket. About as easy to lose as a hat that can't fall off your head. Neither item is particularly easy to lose. But I do think it is easier to deal with. It's just on or off real quick, stays put however you wear it (other than ones that want to sag down off your nose when you want it covering your nose).

I will cede that a hat/scarf combo will keep your ears warmer if you either have a hat large enough that it doesn't ride up on your ears or if you have a method of forming a secure seal between the hat and scarf. I don't like how I feel the need to adjust and retighten scarves when they start shifting around. But maybe it's just that I'm a scarf noob and it's easier than it seems to me.

It’s pretty hard considereding it has camouflage. It can be done though. Maybe blue jeans and red Adidas cloud foam advantages or whatever they’re called.

Basically offset the “airsoft” look with things that are entirely not. Maybe a loud beanie or hat can help.
