I want to get a few and I already know what I want. I work out a lot, and I have a really masculine/ somewhat crooked face, so it works. Tattoo artists who charge more usually use higher quality ink, just about all tattoos will blur a little over time but the better the ink the longer they'll last before they need a touch up. So, is it a bad idea to get a geometric tattoo from one of those $20 tattoo places? I got my first tattoo there and I liked the guys lines. I figure it should be okay, neatness-wise, since its just straight lines with no artistic ability needed. Is there something I'm not considering here or is this the perfect use of a cheaper tattoo place?

The next most expensive place I can think of wanted to charge me 50-60 dollars (their minimum is $40) for what amounted to 3 minutes of work (and $25 at the place in question) so I don't even want to consider what they would charge for this.

When you message about a design, you're booking an appointment. You'll have to say what your ideas are, how big, where you want them and so on all in the message to the artist. I'm afraid even if it did come to less than an hour you;d still be charged whatever the minimum cost is for that studio or artist. It;s possible they don;t have one, but I've not seen it myself.
If you;re picking from flash...I don;t actually know. it;d probably be cheaper to pay an hour at $60 that to pay $25 for three small flash pieces for example.
Don't underestimate how long lines can take though, I've had two moderately sized and not overly complex tattoos and they took three-four hours a piece.

That's fine, because it;s agreed upon beforehand. As long as you explain this to the artist they'll be able to give you an idea of how long they'll think it takes plus a cost and you can judge it that way.

Flash is flash, it has to already exist and it will always be cheaper than a custom design.. If you're asking them to draw something, even small, it;s not flash. I don;t know how much of a difference it'll make in this case since they're small and simple, but it might limit your options to just booking in as normal.

Where the hell are you that they're charging that much? The best guy I've ever been to was $140 an hour and I got this eel out of it. The average here in the UK for a middling artist in any style would be about $60-90 an hour. $100 and above you better be getting your money's worth.

Asking and hourly rate is possibly a bit forward. You'd probably be better off putting together an e-mail with the information i.e. several small tattoos (palm size, or a measurement, some idea for them to work off) in this style (include reference images, ideally from the shop if they;ve done it before) and where you want them. Then ask for an idea of how much to bring.

There's nothing stopping you just asking the rate though, it's against my British polite sensibilities but I've never dealt with american artist. They may be okay with it.

As far as recognizing quality...I'm a gemmologist. I studied first of course, but I'm now at a point where I've looked at enough stones over the years I can say 'oh that is a so-and-so' and when people ask how I know..it;s because I;ve seen it before. I think the same applies to recognizing tattoo quality, look at as many pieces as possible. Good artists, solid lines and shading. It;s so easy now with instagram and popularity can actually indicate quality because of the competition. If you expose yourself to enough you'll recognize quality because you;ve seen it before.

I don't have any single idea that would take an hour. I have some geometric designs like pic related, I would like drawn on either arm.
