i recently bought some 30$ cargos and tapered them, it came out perfectly, they're my fav pair of pants now. do you have done similar mods to your clothes? i'm especially looking vor ideas to mod some inexpensive gore-tex jacket, maybe adding 1/2 cargo pockets to a more 'naked' looking one

This isn't right at all.

A hardshell is differentiated from a softshell by function. A hardshell is always waterproof/breathable and is meant to stand up to heavy rain/sleet/snow. It goes on top of a softshell, insulating layer, and base layer.

A softshell is a bit more ambiguous in definition but typically refers to a shell which is water-resistant (but not necessarily waterproof). They are typically lined with fleece and lightly insulated: designed to be worn next to the skin in order to transfer moisture away from the body and out of the shell during extended active use while simultaneously lightly insulating and protecting from the elements.
