In this ITT thread we talk about suits.

Best suit designs, best suit fabrics, unforgivable suit sins.

Few things are more |fa| then suits.

For such a niche "old-timy" look to that fabric, the cut is a little too modern. For instance, the lapels are pretty slim. It gets valences out because the tie is slim, but then it has a vest. The vest really doesn't go with that slim lapel - slim tie cut. I'd like to see what this actually looks like on someone. It seems a lot of these suits are bought by people like Connor McGregor trying to be swag-menswear and it looks to goofy to be worn in any setting that would actually require a suit.

I have a solid very dark navy suit which is pretty cheap and a little boxy but at least it does the job for interviews and stuff. I want a nicer suit which is a bit less stuffy for social events and stuff, is something from suitsupply in the ~$500 range my best choice? Is J Crew decent? I can spend more, but it's hard to justify with how rarely I actually need a suit.

I'm thinking probably a medium to darker grey, I like textures or maybe some very subtle pattern. Not too tight, no skinny lapels, something classic. I'm thinking of trying thrift stores but I don't want to end up reviewbrah core or looking like a college professor.

I love tweed but I'm smart enough to realize that tweed suits require particular circumstances.
Assuming you live a life where you wear suits regularly enough to justify having more than one (doubtful knowing the demographic of this board), tweed is casual and doesn't work in most offices. Additionally it works best on older men or men with full beards. It's a fairly traditional/old fashioned fabric at this point as opposed to straight wool. It's also warmer so it works best in cool/cold weather.

You may fit all these requirements, in which case tweed is appropriate as fuck for you but I'm just pointing out the cards are stacked against you.

there are bits and pieces that I can pluck from just about any era, this one included.

I agree with OP that we're very close to the end of that period where overly slim/skinny fit predominates.

Suiting, just like any segment of the industry, comes down to proportion. Learn the rules of what works for your body FIRST, and THEN toe the line for more extravagant ideas.

Also, don't make this stuff more complicated than what it is - some guys want a semi- spread collar with side vents on their jacket, others prefer point collars & cuffed trousers. Individual taste shouldn't supercede practical knowledge of what works best for you.

The main one is good fit in the shoulder, everything else is easier for an alteration tailor to fix. Shoulders that are the wrong fit pretty much can't be fixed though. Besides that, look for enough room in the waist, waist pinch at the right level, right length of the jacket, right length of the leg, right waist length.

Too big is better than too small (again, except shoulder) because it means extra fabric/more fixable instead of something just being too small, expanding when there's no fabric to use is again not doable.

Start with a topcoat or a textured jacket and light grey pants. Don't wear vests unless you happen to like fleece vests.

A sport coat is over the top in daily casual settings so you have to downplay it and to be sloppy as possible. Fleece vests, hoodies, down vests, textured sweaters, striped t-shirts, jeans...

And stick with a topcoat instead of a jacket if you don't know what to wear with a sport coat.

I'm not sure where you can get shoes in the €300 price range, something like Crockett & Jones will be more like €450 whereas e.g. the Meermin standard price for low shoes is €160.

In your place I'd probably get RTW Meermins, they have a decent range of oxfords and should be able to supply something to suit you. Plus, their quality to price ratio is great, probably the best out there. Just be aware that their most popular lasts for shoes lean toward the small side, you typically want to go half a size up from your normal shoe size if you want to be reasonably comfortable right away. (Also don't forget that US and UK/EU sizes are different, if you're a burgerbro)

>> No.12977641

Depends on how much you're willing to spend. A bespoke suit can easily run into the thousands, and I mean an actual bespoke suit made from a personalized paper pattern. A lot of custom business are actually Made-to-Measure and they sometimes outsource their work. A custom suit won't be perfect from the get-go but you can get a more optimal fit than RTW.

Buying RTW is cheaper and not a bad option, especially if you have a fairly typical body. Alteration can cost into the hundreds depending on the complexity of the alterations.

Don't wear waistcoats unless it's a very formal occasion and all of your wardrobe fits it - so never with jeans, for one.

Be kinda careful about how "casual" the rest of your outfit is compared to the jacket. Don't wear completely shitty washed-out jeans with holes in them if you're gonna wear a sports jacket and dress shoes.

I wanna say avoid tight/skinny pants, too. I always kinda cringe when people wear extremely tight trousers with blazers or sport jackets.

Wearing something else than a dress shirt under a jacket is fine - plain white or black shirts work fine. Turtleneck sweaters are kinda more audacious but they work fine, too.

Avoid pocket squares, handkerchiefs, etc if it's not a formal occasion.

My daughter last year was crazy about the prom. I knew that it would be hard but i didn’t really know how hard it would be. Makeup, hair, dress and a thousand more things that I don't even know how to name it. I thought that i will just pay for all of it and she and her mom will all do the rest. I realized that next year is going to be my son's prom and I asked him maybe we can start preparing a few months before. My son told me just to order a suit and that's all. I found one place where you can order Prom suits. We ordered one and that's all. There is a really big difference between girls and boys.
