Really, if you are legitimately trying to get into hiking, you'll probably enjoy it more if practicality is your first concern rather than looking good. Bottom line is that being miserable outside is not fashionable, even if you are fashionably dressed. You can spend a lot of money on expensive gear that works nice and looks nice, but I think the fashionable part of outdoorsmen kind of comes with their carefreeness about appearance that is so heavily romanticized. Do you want to hike because you like nature, or do you want to hike because it's fashionable?

>>>/out/ here. Thanks for keeping this shit off our board.
The guy mentioning techwear above has a sound point. It usually uses the same materials as high end /out/ clothing and a lot of it - excluding some of the edgy high fashion crap - is cut to maximize mobility. There's a lot of crossover, which is why Patagonia and TNF show up in the techwear threads all the time. Don't rule it out.
Come lurk for a while. We have threads about aesthetic vintage mountaineering gear, milsurp, and gear comparisons all the time. You have to start with function and then find the best-looking way to accomplish that function, not the other way around. One of the first things you'll hear is to cut out all plant fibers in favor of wool and synthetics. Please don't post that image on /out/, you'll be laughed out by even the most casual day hikers.

Here you go OP. Don't listen to /out/ists. What is hiking but walking? Only 45° steep in freezing weather on knife sharp limestone peaks.
