If you threw in a bookshelf or a tall plant on the far wall it would break up some of the negative space.

Also could put some art up.

Also a tall lamp.

Needs more things at eye level coz rn everything is on the ground that's why the room feels empty/unbalanced.

get a bookshelf in a cheap bedframe. put a few things on the wall but dont go overboard. thats already a really nice space with nice natural light. you dont have to make up for anything so just do things that you feel would compliment the natural energy of the space.

0 budget suggestions:

As mentioned before, need to balance out the mess on the ground vs emptiness on walls. I really like your furniture actually, just gotta tie it together better. Step one, tidy up and get rid of those weird tape things on the ceiling. They kinda shift if from minimalism to trash. Second, i would arrange the two plants and maybe even your bedside lamp on the stools around the room or perhaps in a "plant nook", get creative here. I really like the stools btw. Tall plant on stool provides a bit of height, good start. Also plant on desk looks very cramped as the desk space is limited already.
Then, try to do something with that ceiling lamp on the ground. I assume you dont have a ceiling lamp but look up how to hook them up, it might sound intimidating but is pretty ez actually. As the ceiling is really high you could even opt for a long cable instead of just having it all the way up on the ceiling, idk how to explain but surely u get what i mean. If you feel fancy, google origami lampshades as you don't have anything to cover that lightbulb with. Theyre pretty low effort to make and cost pretty much nothing.

As for actual investments, some nice bookshelves on the walls would be an option to avoid that stack of books. And but that picture higher up on the wall next to the desk, atm it just looks thrown in a corner.
Your room has some nice minimalist/mid-century vibes to it, pinterest is full of it at the moment. I'm sure you'll find good inspo there.

What sort of chairs do you guys use in your rooms?

I'm redecorating and the majority of things in my room are white/beige but I can't find any office chairs in the sub-200 bong range that aren't just black and plastic.

I'm thinking about buying the IKEA Volmar in all black because of the price and just putting up with the colour.

also had the same in blue and green, but my hands were full. hope it's open tomorrow, gonna cop the blue and green one too

that little side table also from there, $5
the lamp is a luxo i got there for $5, then i saw them on ebay for like $70

Alright then. Imo theres nothing wrong with the Volmar, just that it's an Ikea chair and youre gonna start seeing it everywhere once you bought it. It wont ruin the room of course. If you have the time, go check out craigslist/ebay/goodwill or whatever for something unique, or one of the thousands of fake design furniture stores. I always feel like desk chairs are either design or comfort, it's breddy tough to find a good one :^(

Thanks! I bought four chairs at a thrift store. I have two red ones that are random 1970s chairs. And two of the ones on the right. They are class room chairs. And then i have six of those stools but i don't know about their background. I got them from my mom.

Alright I cleaned it up a bit with some of your suggestions.

I know I still need to: Get a nice earth tone curtain to replace blinds (but I'm up to any other color suggestions), figure out what to do with the wooden table/king tut lamp and figure out what to do with the long empty wall if anything

Should I look into a tall indoor shrub or a lamp? I'm definitely planning on getting some native species in hanging boxes for the porch. Sadly the computer area probably will stay how it is, but I've cleaned up the cables pretty well and can ditch the lava lamp if it's truly that repulsive lmao

ah yeah I was just about to say it's a desk. I could potentially ditch the larger TV altogether since I'm basically just using it as a larger Netflix monitor and the occasional PS3 nostalgia game.
I'll play around with moving it to the other wall and re-positioning the futon/bed. So you think the back of the futon (when in couch form) should face the balcony door rather than the closet door? I guess for either all you need is enough room to walk by.
The little nook near the W/D just has a never small bookshelf with all my books that fits into it perfectly. Definitely need to relocate my rowing machine though

Quick and dirty mockup - won't know if this works unless ya try it, cause I'm shit with dimensions. I'd suggest getting a larger bookcase, so you can throw some storage in there too. Maximize the space.

Rug is ugly, wall thing is gaudy, lamp thing is ugly. Desk is kinda goofy too, and the chair could be nicer. Speaker system or whatever behind bed is ugly.

The rest is lovely, you're very lucky those floors are beautiful and that window is super comfy.

My landlord just gave me some old grey metal shelves for free. They look like pic related but are much shorter.
They'd be really useful for my desk stuff but they're a bit prison-like. Should I spray-paint them white (I have monochrome furniture) or make them work as is somehow?

Yes. I paint with oil. Its some what of a hassle because of the mess it leaves. But, the results are really worth it. Will be posting some of my paitings. Not really a high end product, but the process is really satisfying, almost like a catharsis.

The wall behind the telly is indeed a empty spot and I know it needs something but I'm not quite sure what exactly and where exactly. I know my family has a bunch of paintings that they'd want to give to me, but they're mostly just generic "scenic painting of a forest or a field" etc.

I'm also wondering what size of an art piece I'd put up. I wouldn't want an artpiece to dominate the room.

Position wise, on the left and right spots the painting might get "cornered" with all of the stuff I have there (I sometimes keep the closet door open to the left) and in the middle it would just look goofy right above the telly.

not that anon but this is what i'd do

1.move the bed to the wall with the window
2. add color and contrast. Longterm you should probably replace all your furniture with some thing a bit darker(i like teak but it's up to you), short term you should put some art up, get a lamp with a nice warm light, open your blinds, get some plants, replace your sheets with white ones. I'd get rid of the bed frame and just put some legs on the bed. Start going to thrift shops and see if you can find something to replace your chest of drawers. Just try to get some warmth into your room and it will improve a lot
