Someone needs to set the record straight on Manson and Nine Inch Nails regarding their belonging to the goth scene cause it's a fucked-up situation.

Here's the thing: they both drew some inspiration from bands (Christian Death for MM, Depeche Mode for NIN) that weren't goth, but influenced the goth scene. And like new romantics who helped shape it, they both have a giant hard-on for Bowie. And if you wanna boil down goth to "moody new wave with a whiny singer dressed in black" you could argue that PHM was technically goth but it just doesn't sound the same: there's no reverb and no sense of majesty in it. Sonically, the Spooky Kids had nothing to do with goth, they were a White Zombie ripoff that parodied children's entertainment, essentially they were a punk-ish throwback to pre-punk Rock N Roll, with a few references to new romantic synthpop thrown in there that didn't even make it into their album.

I think the confusion comes mainly from the fact that to onlookers (including Robert Smith himself) melodramatic lyrics + spooky fashion = goth. And goth had always been kinda nebulous so when you remove the watery sound and the ominousness, you're left with spooky fashion. And if you're a weirdo in the early 90s who's still clinging to goth rock or new wave you're gonna gravitate towards those bands even if it's really not the same shit.

And once the media gets ahold of it, right as both bands decide to release more melodramatic albums (TDS and ACSS) everyone goes "fuck it, this is goth now." cause the actually goth bands are too old or too obscure.

Of course, neither NiN nor MM acknowledge this (why would they? they play industrial glam rock) but after a while, they both notice that because of them, goth is "a thing" again except not the real thing. So, mostly as a joke, they play along, Trent starts looking like Dracula and Manson releases EMDM, everyone takes it seriously and a few years later, everyone is embarrassed and decides to throw goth under the bus.

>> No.12750724

>>12750714
And let's not forget that bands like Skinny Puppy acted as a transition point between the new wave/goth scenes and the industrial scene (even though many goth artists dabbled in industrial and vice-versa, at the end of the day it's all post-punk), so when spooky guys with makeup playing industrial rock music came along, everyone was kind of ready to assume that they were goth.

Now he does, But in the 90s he would dress up in black bondage sex pervert outfits and around 2000 he straight-up looked like Dracula.

I think that him dropping the Dracula look may have had something to do with a lot of goth kids dropping the goth thing to. Cause if daddy Trent doesn't look goth, why should I?

And Manson doesn't exactly make it look good anymore.

I suppose it's also called Aristocrat fashion in Japan? Japan seems cool with their different street fashion styles and such. In my country everyone just dresses like a normalfag and if they see someone with different fashion style they act like they saw a fucking ghost.

>> No.12750806

>>12750790
Japan is special. Their goth scene evolved differently because when goth rock, glam metal and all sorts of theatrical punk and metal-derived scenes hit them in the 80s, all of that shit was lumped together under "visual kei", and eventually merged with the idol system when some of the biggest bands sold out. As a result it started trying to appeal to anime-watching fujoshi in the 90s while indiscriminately assimilating any kind of mildly edgy trend from the US, thereby spawning a billion autistic micro-trends that are basically cosplay while simultaneously streamlining itself into an unrecognizable goop of glam rock, goth rock, melodeath, power metal, nu-metal, emocore and pop punk. Each band tries to have a purely visual gimmick and some of them latched onto this specific aesthetic, which resulted in this trend.

So really the jap aristocrat fashion is the same thing, but filtered through edgy Boys Bands and yaoi mangas.

Ouji cosplay is an offshoot of victorian goth. 9S doesn't dress "cyber" anything, he dresses like an Ouji cosplayer.

This nigga doesn't look punk or goth or anything, he just looks like a modern-day money-flexing high fashion poseur. Looks like his hobbies involve coffee, lightbulbs, rice paper, forcing himself to enjoy spectral music, questioning his own sexuality, and standing in rooms. Definitely not the sewer-crawling, computer-hacking, robot-raping type. I agree that "cyberpunk" is vague as fuck if you're using the term to qualify pieces of fiction, but the character archetype is pretty clear-cut.

Looked good? Eh. But that was the same back in the day anyways. Rivetheads never change so that's a given. Other than that, still a lot of corsets and a lot of Cyberdog/PlastikWrap on the girls.

I guess more people are just doing a sleeker version of cyber, or maybe we're just all getting older. Not as many obnoxious cybergoths with the furry legwarmers and foam dreads. I think some of the younger gen who would have gone for that are opting for 90s raver style instead or the weeaboo convention version. Also, not nearly as much uniform fetish style.

Jensen is LITERALLY a fictional character with metal strapped all over. He isn't cool because of super-practical tacticool techwear, he's just got prostheses that look cool, the rest is just a third-rate Neo-wannabe outfit. He isn't a "proof of concept" of high-fashion techwear ; because unlike you and I, he's got robot arms and shitloads of implants that allow him to be intimidating despite looking like a fuccboi. The sleek high fashion thing is just him looking as un-punk as possible in order to sneak around because he's really more of a super-spy than a high-tech low-life.

here's a good example of doable cyberpunk:
>>12758879
a random rivethead thug who happens to have a brainjack. The overly-elaborate sunglasses convey the idea that his worldview is filtered by technology and they look like they conceivably might be some kind of weird VR goggles. If you want to make it more of a fashion statement you can obviously use accessories as precise cultural references. But the charm of cyberpunk comes precisely from the fact that it's NOT consistently futuristic, it's very 20th century with a few extra gadgets. The archetypal cyber-punk doesn't need super-advanced clothes to run around, hack computers and shoot people so practicality is a moot point when jeans, boots and a leather jacket do the job just fine, he's probably too poor to blow his cash on anything but drugs, weapons and maintenance anyway. So he just dresses like the rest of his dumb gang. It's just as realistic as Jensen, but unlike Jensen's look, it's punk.

YOUR REPLY IS UNINTENTIONALLY IRONIC; BY IMPLYING THAT I IGNORE WHAT CONSTITUTES AN OXYMORON, YOU HAVE MERELY REVEALED YOUR IGNORANCE OF WHAT CONSTITUTES AN OXYMORON —THE TERM "RADICALLY TRADITIONAL" IS AN OXYMORON.

AN ALTERNATIVE POSSIBILITY IS THAT YOU IGNORE THE MEANING OF "RADICALLY", AND/OR OF "TRADITIONAL".

>> No.12760360

PERHAPS YOU DO IGNORE THOSE MEANINGS

"RADICAL" MEANS "COMES FROM THE ROOTS" AND TRADITIONS ARE THE FOUNDATION OF A CULTURE; INSOFAR AS CULTURE IS USUALLY REFERRED TO AS A LIVING, GROWING THING, YOU COULD SAY THAT TRADITIONS ARE ITS ROOTS

SO REALLY, "RADICALLY TRADITIONAL" IS MORE OF A TRUISM

"RADICAL" DOES N O T MEAN "WILLING TO TRY NEW THINGS OUT OF IDEOLOGICAL EXTREMISM".

>> No.12760403

>>12760360
>"RADICAL" MEANS "COMES FROM THE ROOTS"...

YES, THAT IS CORRECT.

>... TRADITIONS ARE THE FOUNDATION OF A CULTURE...

NO.

TRADITION IS THE GIVING ACROSS (GENERATIONS, COLLECTIVES, INDIVIDUALS) OF NORMS, PRACTICES, RITUALS, CUSTOMS, ESPECIALLY IN ROTELY AND TAUTOLOGICALLY.

CULTURE IS NOT FOUNDED ON, NOR SUPPORTED BY, TRADITION; ON THE CONTRARY: TRADITION IS AN ANTICULTURAL FORCE WHICH STULTIFIES, PARALYZES, AND NEGATES, PROCULTURAL FORCES.

>"RADICAL" DOES N O T MEAN "WILLING TO TRY NEW THINGS OUT OF IDEOLOGICAL EXTREMISM".

I DID NOT IMPLY, NOR ASSERTED, THAT THAT IS WHAT IT MEANS.

YOU SEEM TO BE CONFUSING CULTURE AND PROGRESS. A CULTURE GROWS AND PROGRESSES WHEN IT MEETS NEW CONDITIONS AND NEW PEOPLE, BUT WITHOUT TRADITIONS IT'S NOT A CULTURE IN THE FIRST PLACE, IT'S JUST AN ARBITRARY COLLECTION OF RANDOM PRACTICES.

IF TRADITION IS A FORCE IT CAN ONLY BE A CULTURAL FORCE, EVEN IF IT'S A REACTIONARY FORCE.

A CULTURE THAT HAS STOPPED GROWING IS STILL A CULTURE, THINGS DON'T ALWAYS NEED TO CHANGE IN ORDER TO SURVIVE. ESPECIALLY NOT MADE-UP THINGS LIKE CULTURES.

IN THE CASE OF THE GOTH SUBCULTURE, ALL IT NEEDS TO SURVIVE IS FOR PEOPLE TO KEEP DOING GOTH THINGS, NOT FOR PEOPLE TO FIND NEW WAYS OF DOING GOTH THINGS
