i always see these open racks (or whatever you cal them in english) on /fa/ all the time - and they make me cringe
unless you only have, i don't know, only ten items and constantly in use, it all gets dusty and/or takes on the smells of your place (esp cooking)
i also don't understand why the shoes are kept with the clothes. i've seen this in u.s. closet spaces, maybe it's a climate thing, but where i am, the weather is kind of shit / wet half of the year, and it would be so gross.

i'd say give it a try
but i live in an old house too, and after a week there can be a fine layer of dust everywhere
i mean, maybe it doesn't bother you, but i would store the more sensitive items at least in some sort of box or container (maybe on the pallets, maybe you can make it work to look ok) or as you mention in drawers
also sunlight can bleach out clothes, so be careful with darker items

For those apartment exist a thing called free standing wardrobes.
More practical, aestethical and functional those even have something called drawers to place ur socks and underwear inside.

The open rack thing is only good for those standing in closets, outside that in for example ur room ar just nasty.

Also even if you like a picture a lot sometimes they just work because of the place, like wooden walls and stuff. I hate this room. It's such a stereotypical tech nerd who moved out of his mom's basement setup. Computer is still the focus, office chair is a bit too over-designed, still likes anime but feels like he/she can class it up to make it acceptable, whimsical chair in a bright color for an interesting pop, sheepskin doing fuck all under the desk.

It's kinda split 50/50 among those I know. I grew up in a house where shoes on was fine if they were clean but if it was muddy or snowy outside obviously leave them by the door. I don't think there's anything wrong with leaving shoes on in the house if you're not a gross fuck, Just clean your damned house/floors regularly.

i like the plant idea - like one of those big palm leaf plants. also put a bedside table next to your bed. Put some curtains up on the window - neutral or linen color. Also i think a tall lamp on the floor and/or short swing arm lamp on your bedside table are nice. Definitely with yellow light/soft lightbulbs. I like having a little plant on the window sill. A nice tapestry on the wall can add a lot if you're not into pictures. Also maybe a standing bookshelf to display some stuff and keep your books

One of the furniture pieces is a huge ass Ikea "pax" closet that I don't really need since I'm a male and I don't own as much clothes.

Move the tapestry above your window. It clutters up the window space, and distracts from a nice view through a large window. Hang it vertically on the wall to the right of the window, just right of the TV, and move those other two japanese pieces closer together to compensate, perhaps both centered over the fireplace.
