Tbh, some of these pics I have, I don't know if they have Rick or if they're instead Helmut, Ann D, etc. Am I gonna get reee'd at for posting pics that aren't Rick but still fit the aesthetic?

Also, I wish there was a nice gallery website that showed the works and pieces of various designers so that you could learn about who made what, etc. Otherwise, I don't know how to familiarize myself beyond browsing the designer's store, which usually only shows pics of their current season.

I don't see how when it's all basic cotton stuff of which most is paper thin and you can find similar elongated slim cuts on various sites for less than 1/5 of the price if you keep an eye out.

Sorry, but nothing can convince me to pay hundreds for an oversize plain t-shirt or a long line longsleeve when you get virtually the same silhouette for 20 or 30. People like you is where he makes the largest profit margin.

>> No.12695133

Rick prices are more worth the high price tag due to how unique the style is. No other designers or mainstream brands are doing anything close to exactly what Rick does.

There is an argument to be made in buying a plain white crewneck tee for $300 considering you can get something extremely similar to it elsewhere for $20, but with Rick there are few alternatives that aren't directly taking inspiration or blatantly copying his designs.

You basically can not find similarly thing cotton from any brand and the fabric being thin as fuck serves a huge design purpose.
He also has ton of different materials for example pods, you don't have those choices with most brands and the quality of all of them is stellar.
It's not the type of things and design choices that communicate that well through pictures over internet so I can understand why getting his appeal might be hard if you aren't familiar with the garments at all.

To be fair everything that has been said about Rick applies to designers in general.

'High Fashion' is merely a construct, a guise to establish a culture of consumerism that makes wealthy people and those who wish to be feel enabled. Nothing more or less.

We live in 2017. 90% of any branded clothing is the exact same quality as high fashion products. It's only a matter of materials and cuts at this point. The only thing that separates them really is that standard clothes are assorted and cut to fit the 'mainstream' of what is considered the 'norm'. Aesthetics which appeal to the masses. Designers only separate themselves by deliberately choosing cuts that will appeal to a certain niche, which would not be profitable in mass production.

this when I went normie mode a year ago all I wore was jeans and a tshirt and maybe some sneakers. Albeit it's not all doom and gloom with that it was just very basic and I saw "high fashion" as very basic and had a very small grasp of what exactly it meant, I thought all of it was overpriced garbage for the most up their ass "fashion fags" and wearing a sweater jeans and vans were good looking. But as I got more into fashion and /fa/ I've kinda made the realization that some of it is overpriced but it can look really nice like yohji, rick, helmut, mattiussi, etc and I've also came across the decision I'd rather amass a small array of good looking clothes than but cheap garbage from zumiez and think I looked good. I dont think fashion is for retards with their heads so far up their ass they're inside out anymore and it's actually really fun to experiment with clothes so I enjoy runway shit and I enjoy weird abnormal silhouettes and view it as a form of art and even though some of it I wouldn't personally wear because I think It's outrageous I can appreciate a lot of it

fashion on /fa/ and to those who do not care truly about designer fashion see fashion as a guise for rampant consumerism, but it is in fact a entirely distinct medium for artistic expression.

There are gorgeous pieces that evoke a litany of emotions from the beauty of the arrangement and texture of fabrics, the perfect silhouette of a specific piece on a model, and the novel ways in which designers present their creations.

You are thinking of fast fashion, H&M, Adidas, Nike, and to a lesser extent Gucci, Prada, and other brands that subsist solely on name rather than pure artistic talent.

Let's have a real debate about this, because art philosophy is an interesting subject to me. How do you judge the value of artistic works? Through it's cultural impact? It's semiotic value? It's aesthetic content? Perhaps the effort it takes to create a work of art (your favorite romanticist painters)?

Designers like Miyake embody all of those concepts in the work they produce; they have the skill needed to craft the textiles in the manner in which they'd like to see the finished product produced, they have the cultural impact of innovating an entire medium and industry, and they communicate subtly the artists feelings or concepts they wish to showcase. These are signs of a true artist, someone who dedicates time and effort into a piece of work. The "bathmat" was hand stitched by textileists to achieve that exact look, the subtle moire effect achieved by the overlapping peaks and valleys is eye catching, the color palette used to not only make the eggshell peak and the contrasting pink valleys is also very interesting choice.

Again, I own some Rick, Julius, and I have owned SLP, but I'm not fucked in the head like you. I buy these pieces to create my own aesthetic that should represent me and I know I'm practically being robbed in the process.

You have been blinded beyond recognition and developed this cult-like mental state of justifying your decisions by taking part in what you perceive to be 'art' when in reality it is the exact same principles applying to the 'DE NEW JORDANZ SICK YO!' type of consumerist marketing ploy. Yes, some of the clothes may be nice and some may not, but ultimately that is secondary, because you don't see the actual piece of clothing in it, but rather a mental construct which has been induced by viral marketing with the intent of selling you clothes for 5 times their actual value.

Trust me, you WILL one day grow out of this and you may think back and smirk about the financial resources you wasted at a time when you engaged things in such a naive manner. At least I hope so.

Why even own your pieces? Do they bring you pleasure from how they look and the their aethetic value? Or are you so self indulgent and masturbatory all you care about is the brands you wear in the mirror and how the people you associate perceive you, that's exactly how you sound. You're not a critic or appreciator of art, just a mindless consumerist /fa/ fashion victim that buys the newest Dries drop when you've borrowed and scrounged up enough money.

How do you think these designers see fashion when they design a piece? Do they slump together some rubber and call it a shoe? No they put effort and meaning into it.

Fashion and /fa/ is infested with your type, they don't take art seriously, it's just another thing to buy and another tool to pimp off you lack of persona to friends.

Sure you do.

>I'm just interested in art and the philosophy of art, of aesthetics, of beauty.
Then you know that art has always been, throughout human history, a commercial good of social status. Royal court painters, towns-tailors etc. This has always been the case, not just today. Whether you like it or not, art has mainly been a determinant of wealth and status, same as today.

>Why even own your pieces? Do they bring you pleasure from how they look and the their aethetic value?
Yes, obviously. Otherwise I wouldn't buy them. I'm being selective, regardless of brand or price point because I want something to fit ME and not me fitting to some artificial circle.

>are you so self indulgent and masturbatory all you care about is the brands you wear in the mirror and how the people you associate perceive you, that's exactly how you sound. You're not a critic or appreciator of art, just a mindless consumerist /fa/ fashion victim
We all are. You can't escape this. It is basic function of free markets and clothing distribution. Literally human nature. Inevitable in one form or the other. But I'm not being a delusional idealist about it.

>How do you think these designers see fashion when they design a piece?
They want to establish a brand. A mental association with a certain mainline aesthetic that is recognized universally. Every designer, every brand works towards that goal, because it secures their market slot. In case you're aiming at 'artistic expression', sure that might be the case for independent tailors, students etc. but anyone who owns a brand is in full business mode. These runway shows are merely self-indulgent promotion schemes. Even Rick Owens himself said "I'm not delusional about what this is to interpret it as some form of art. I'm aware this is a business."

>Yes, obviously. Otherwise I wouldn't buy them.

>They want to establish a brand.
And they want to express their human creativity through that brand. Again, you're creating these false dichotomies in which it is STRICTLY profit driven, there is NO ART WHATSOEVER. You haven't even made a basis for this libertarian logic besides the fact that it's "Literally human nature". Reductionist market psychology just doesn't exist here, DaVinci's art and Michelangelo's were not entirely influenced by the market, they were influenced by the distinct emotional characteristics of human beings, of advanced consciousness.

Not the guy, but I feel like good way to learn is to just take the clothes for what they are. Watch shows and just be honest about how you feel about the clothing, it's pretty simple.
As far as established philosophy of some designer goes, you have to read interviews, watch previous shows and really get in to the details of what makes certain garments that specific designers. Or at least that's how it's for me.
Basically once you find some designer you are enthusiastic about, you kinda learn these kinda things naturally.
