Hey, since there was an actual discussion in the last one, let's have a nice interior inspo/advice thread. I'm currently re-furnishing my student apartment and I'd like to go for a darker atmosphere. Which plants would you recommend for this? Which ones are low-maintenance?

Cacti and succulents are fairly low maintenance, but they greatly benefit from a good deal of sunlight. Jungle cacti will do better in lower light environments.

Outside of that list with all the "impossible to kill" plants, it's kind of trial and error. I have some type of tropical plant that supposedly needs careful watering and lots of light, but I'm terrible with this shit and have failed to even slightly damage it.

-record player + records
-plant (dracaena draco)
-sofa (black leather)

-small persian rug (underneath coffee table)
-standing lamp (somewhat industrial looking, black)

I never like any of the posts in these threads. I think what sets me off is the fixation with:

>White or concrete walls
>Large, open spaces, large windows
>Shabby/Industrial elements and random ephemera

I dunno, maybe you guys live in warmer climates, I can see why that might feel refreshing and breathable if you live in SoCal or somesuch.

But I prefer darker walls, well defined spaces, dramatic lighting and comfortable (but still aesthetically simple) furnishings. In the winter I want to feel cozy. In the summer I want to be able to sit in an alcove or sheltered seating, with a view of a garden or courtyard. Traditional Japanese courtyard gardens and Roman villas are major inspirations for me.

Is there any aspect of the pic you like in particular? I can post many more in the same vein of whatever in particular.

I'd also like to make an addendum to my previous post: I should say that I'm not necessarily adverse to large, open interior, however I think they are very difficult to do right. Too often in our society we focus only on the numbers of floorspace and roof height and end up overpaying for very vacuous space. I have 9-foot ceilings (all the buildings in town have them) and it drives me nuts that it makes my furniture look way too short and I have to find large, vertical art to create points of attraction on the wall.

Pic attached is obviously not a home, but is inspiration for what I'd like to see in a modern interpretation of a Roman villa, with a courtyard at center and smaller, simple alcove rooms surrounding.

I'm literally poor, though, so almost all my furniture has to be scrounged or secondhand. I have a couple things that look cute but it's like a half step above weeaboo cave, and the main room is helpless because I spend so much time cleaning up after my roommate.

Depends on the color and shape, I think. If it otherwise goes with the room I don't think that one fabric will push you into Liberace land.

You need an art of some kind. A little statue would be really cool, or a framed piece of art. I think tapestries are starting to fade now unless you are a 15 year old girl, which is bad because I have a window covering like that.

I really wanna post my place for advice but it's so much more disorganized than I thought in all the photos! I need to Konmari my ass off first.

I'll post a bathroom pic I like from tumblr. It's so fucking hard to make bathrooms look /fa/ when you have a lot of hair products and shit.

I feel like the dark walls and dramatic lighting create claustrophobic spaces, light colored walls and open areas evoke feelings of freedom and a connection to the outside world. Light walls allow for the reflection of natural light and gives the room a sense of breath and life that small dark spaces can not.

You can be comfy in a white room, during the night add some ambience with lights around 3000k to add a glow to the room similar to a natural fire. Japanese houses that include courtyards are known for their connection to the outside, and the fluid transitions from outdoors to indoor spaces. Most houses with shoji are kept open during comfortable weather, effectively blurring the line between "well defined spaces".

Even in colder weather I'd much prefer organic colors to compliment the outside. Brown woods with texture, greys and whites.

There's an Australian architect (probably the most famous one lol) named Harry Seidler who worked a lot with cast concrete. I've actually been lucky enough to visit two of his houses, including the one his wife still lives in. The interior walls are so sick. Concrete cast into old timber frames, so the concrete takes on all the knots etc of the timber.
Can't find any decent pics of the interiors online but check if your library has a book about him or something. You'll fizz at the slit

>>12236471
White/light walls help you get away with having less actual light into a space. Your pic works because there's a huge skylight. In many homes, dark walls and furnishings give a claustraphobic and stuffy feeling. Nice example of how to do darkness right though my man.
The key point is actual LIGHT (not just light colours) is the absolute hero of interior design. Literally everything else is auxiliary to having nice light in a space

I've really thinned my belongings since I moved out, and a lot of my stuff is still home. I try to get rid of some every time I'm home, but if I don't take it to the charity shop/throw it out myself my parents will snipe it.

from books they have no idea on (and neither of them even read), to collections of scrap paper, to CDs I haven't listened to since I was 12 and they certainly never will.

even the garden is a depressing combination of leftover materials for diy projects (seriously, we have a triple-garage sized shed, and my dad arranged a pile of leftover bricks into a lean-to big enough to keep two bicycles inside. the garden is also full of random crap he's found on walks or on dives we went on, fishing weights and lures, old glass bottles. it's really sad, they have a 9 room house way too big for the two of them and every surface is littered with stuff, every room is bursting with stuff. the smallest bedroom is just a walk-in closet for him at this point

it's so depressing. So daunting. Sometimes I look around and think 'how can somebody really think they need any of this? how can somebody live like this?'

What's worse is that once I'm out she's alone. She has cut practically all contact with my father. Her parents are old and also mild hoarders, I'd say. It's horrific. My mum's side of the family are just the most disorganised people.

To make matters worse, she can't even clean. She has always and still always makes me wash her dishes for her, claiming it's 'depressing' seeing all of it piled up. Like no shit.
I always wash and put away anything I've used but she just can't seem to do it herself. She pays a cleaner $50 a fortnight to dust and mop the floor and clean the bathroom cause she doesn't even know where to start. It's misery and I certainly never want to go down her path...
Even in my parents relationship, my dad was always cleaning and cooking...

Last year I lost a shit tonne of weight and grew out of nearly all of my clothes by two sizes, and I got rid of everything. I feel so much more liberated with a compact closet with my favourite pieces. But even then, my mum was so hesitant to get rid of a lot of my clothes. She even said that I 'could grow into them again'...

When she passes away I'll have to sort all her shit. I'd rather incinerate it all because it would be such a fucking task...
Sucks.

Because most people have no taste, no sense of quality, no sense of consistent aesthetic. When I try to explain to my flatmates that they should buy simple, neutral coloured stuff for the kitchen they think I'm an asshole and buy the ugly shit anyway.

Or maybe I'm just biased to one aesthetic
