the drawstrings are work because they mimic the downward lines of the zippers on the jacket as well as continuing the flow of the pleats on the shirt. they also bring some more organic texture into the bottom, which otherwise might clash with the distressed fabric of the jacket

aa, i'm glad you like it. my marker died unexpectedly so i did something a little looser than i usually do for inks; i thought it would be fun to try to capture the subtleties of texture on the clothes as spontaneously as possible. i haven't blogged anything in a while because i'm in college now and i can't pretend that i'm going to be an artist anymore

hey, thanks! if i wasn't too lazy to charge my real camera's battery, the photo probably would have come out better (and i wouldn't have to use a mirror). i was just using the windows and it's cloudy. if you can't tell, the stripes on the sweater match the boots and the shirt collar matches the inside of the jacket pretty well.

lol, i was gonna comment on the boots picking up the red in the sweater, but i couldn't tell how close the colors actually were. a lot of people on /fa/ aren't into the whole "accent color" thing, but screw them. red is a good color, and it looks best when it's not too broadly applied.

i only used one. it wasn't producing a lot of ink, so i used layered applications in order to get darker tones. when using ink, i generally tone with hatching, since i like how it lets me define form.

ink seems in a lot of ways like a very limited medium; no color, no erasing, no smooth midtones or gradients. it means putting a lot of thought and intention into every stroke. one thing i like to do is look at ink drawings and consider the "rules" behind them; the tricks that the artists used to translate form, texture and lighting into an image constrained by technique. r crumb uses quick parallel strokes and layers them in order to give his drawings dimension. moebius is slower and more deliberate with his lines, creating almost minimalist images that define form through single-line hatching that follows contours. jim woodring, whose hands appear to have unreal steadiness, prefers thickening lines over crosshatching in order to show variation in tone.

anyway i borrowed a new marker from my roomate to draw >>11834777 which deserves more attention than it got. the way the bulk of the jacket is balanced by the bulk of the shoes is excellent (oh god my abilities have stagnated so much since i've started college)

that's exactly how mine is - it got a bit 'thicker' because I got a blunt cut, and I wish I shagged it for more texture because I don't naturally have much volume at the top. It's naturally light brown, takes one bleach to get yellow-blonde if that helps.

I think this is my favorite shirt, very loose Levi's cotton shirt (looks a bit wool-y). Pants are drapey brown chinos from Zara I believe, I almost never wear them unless it's with a loose blue shirt or an oversize sweater.
Shoes you can't really see but they're Hush Puppies desert boots in brown.

yeah, they are too tight. i've been looking around for jeans/pants for a while with little luck. ideally, i want slim pants with a good taper, but i find they either are too loose altogether, or they don't slim down around the calves and ankles enough for my taste. probably my fault for having twigs for legs.

the way i look at it is that whether or not your work is profoundly unique carries little importance. the important thing is that your work connects with someone. i'm a musician and a writer more so than i draw, but i think the principle remains. so long as you are not plagiarizing and you're work is your best, you are on the right track: artists get better with time. the point is, art and humor boil down to personal taste, so whether or not it's similar to other art isn't too important. think of it kinda like a genre of music. i'll probably remember that bus stop comic for a while, and you're other work has inspired me to take up drawing again. that's gotta be worth something. the other important thing is to know you can always be improving, so consistently push your boundaries.

i like your stuff. as long as you're doing your thing and you're doing your best, there's really nothing to worry about.

sorry for the terrible quality, but no it's a crewneck pullover + a (on purpose reasonably high) collared shirt. slp as inspo has shown that pairing leather jacket + high waisted pants needs some type of upper body lengthening, hence the high collar.
that said, turtleneck is a great idea come to think of it.
I'm sure to do this type of fit soon again, I'll have a better picture of it I promise.
