Both handles held in one hand or if you're lazy or weak, one-shoulder is a fine option. If you carry it across the chest, it wrinkles your clothes. If you put both short straps over one shoulder it messes up your clothing and posture.

said, you can put it down. When I travel with a duffel bag or a bag without wheels, I just put it down when I can. If your duffel bag is a carry-on then it shouldn't weigh more than 20lb anyway
