I have worked in fragrance (Europe). the top fragrances that people from mainly MENA take 10-15 sprays of (or just steal) are

1 Million - Paco Rabanne
Spicebomb - Viktor & Rolf
Invictus - Paco Rabanne
Le Male - Jean Paul Gaultier
The Scent - Hugo Boss
Boss Bottled - Hugo Boss
Only The Brave - Diesel
Code - Giorgio Armani
Kouros - YSL

some of them are just popular in general.
I have gotten turned off from almost all designer scents since working in fragrance because I get too reminded of the work environment... and the different kinds of customers we had who liked all the hideous scents. I find it hard to enjoy fragrances nowadays... except for a few designer scents and select niche brands.

It's a bit of a long process to be honest. You can find something you like and which is pleasant to wear relatively easily, but finding something which really suits and compliments you and your style can take a bit longer.

A good place to start is just your personality - are you very introverted and quiet? Then perhaps a fragrance which behaves similarly and isn't huge/doesn't project hugely is a start, and vice versa.

Isn't exactly what AdP are good at, though. Most of their eaux de Cologne have some lavender or spice or resins in them, yielding some degree of "barbershop" vibe.

I love Colognes and have a decent collection of fragrances in the genre. The "freshest" I own is Dior Homme Cologne, which is a simple dry musky citrus. Also in the "fresh" category is The Different Company Tokyo Bloom, which is absolutely lovely, light yellow dandelion with accompanying green notes. Less refined and more affordable but very close to Tokyo Bloom in style is Thierry Mugler Cologne. All three should meet your expectations for high summer heat without becoming cloying.

Yep. Yet another reason to be contrarian and spend lots of money on being a special snowflake... or even making your own scents. Wearing the same scent identifies you with, or connects you to, another person. There are so many people wearing many common scents that I would never want to fraternize with from a fragrance point of view... I think it's quite common for people to think that though. That's partly why some spend so much money on fragrances that most other people can't afford or get their hands on. It's a matter of personal identity, same as with a lot of personal style choices...

>>11709211
It is the #1 scent of the "fragrance parasites" in stores.
1 Million testers are emptied the fastest, stolen the most, and the "customers" are the rudest and loudest.
Wearing 1 Million is in practice aposematism... Stay away from this person as far as possible...
The bottle is a damn plastic gold bar. It really tells you something about the fragrance and who wears it.

Pretty much agree w everything you said. Lots of fuccbois here make fun of vintage or niche, but on the contrary, why would you want to smell common? Dousing yourself in Invictus is the olfactory equivalent of wearing a sideways cap while riding a hoverboard. Wearing a shitload of Aventus doesn't make you irresistible, it makes you a hopeless cologne guy. People who assume the popularity of a fragrance = likeliness to get laid and get into fragrance for that reason are either underage and naive or the lights-are-on-but-no-one's-home type; the clout of these people online compared to the small cult willing to seek out a unique signature really hits home why perfume has a generally negative association in the US.

Depends on the atomizer. If it's a Travalo or clone, you pull off the atomizer head of your bottle and stick the Travalo on the exposed tube. If not, you can fill it by spraying in to it. Try to press slowly and the juice will come out as a stream, rather than a mist. A funnel is helpful, but not necessary. A pipette is only for spashes or bottles from which you can unscrew the atomizer. Do not attempt to remove a crimped on atomizer, as you will destroy it.

I would say don't stress and seek out something else. Try the Parfum & see if you like that, maybe even ultime. Some people have better performance with the frozen cologne version. I don't know man, despite what Jeremy will say; it's not the be all end all fragrance.

I always apply my fragrance after I've used unscented moisturiser to my neck. I have generally dry skin so that tends to help a little bit. Also, buy some atomisers and leave one in your jacket if you're in a colder climate. (Make sure it has a lid). So if you really want to rock a reformulated La Nuit, pop 3-5 sprays before you go somewhere and then after 2 hours or so, head to the bathroom and respray with 2-3. As long as you don't change fragrances, people generally won't notice you've done it and there isnt any stigma.

Yes, it smells magical when you get whiffs of it. Then the bubblegummy heart hits and it's the sweet sweet smell of teenage mistakes and stupidity.

It's not really as sweet as everyone claims it to be (I find the tonka centric gourmands sweeter). It's just that the golden suede in it is so loud and obnoxious.

As of two years ago the then-current formulation smelled not exactly the same, but close enough to my vintage bottle. Can't comment further than that.
>Do you still choose to stay with a fragrance after it's been reformulated?
Depends on the fragrance, how bad/different the reformulation is and how inflated the prices are for vintage juice. As a fan of classic fragrances with now-banned ingredients like oakmoss and civet, I will prefer a vintage bottle if easily found on eBay for not a lot more money. I have found a bunch of vintage bottles for close to, or even less thab what a new bottle costs, but I am patient. I have a first release of a 1.7oz Fahrenheit that I got for $41 a few years back. Unremarkable besides the tamarind note. Too much Iso E Super. I don't usually drop the "synthetic" about fragrances, but White really does come across as a mélange of laboratory aroma compounds.

A high quality alternative to White that I stumbled upon recently is Mancera Kumkat Wood. It's cleaner and much more natural smelling, while retaining the tart citrus and cedar core of White. Very much a crowd pleaser, with strong EdP performance.

If you have a hard on for tamarind in particular, The Different Company South Bay features a very realistic tamarind in a vetivered Cologne.

Yes and no. A lot of reformulations are also to do with the rights a company has to the fragrance. If for some reason they don't own full rights to the formula, they do their best to rebuild it from the ground up as best they can to get sole rights to it.
The EU regulations however did affect oakmoss in fragrances which is a pretty big deal. Affected tons of old Dior classics and countless others.

They're flankers...aka scents created to cash in on the success of the original. They may take certain accords or notes from the original composition and tweak them in a way as to create a 'new' scent...although this isn't always the case, there are flankers that smell nothing like the original at all. Pretty much every designer house does this. That said, at least all of the Allure Homme flankers are decent to very good fragrances. Most of the time flankers are just useless cash-grabs. It has to do with ingredient restrictions, which designers houses and big-name niches have to comply with if they want to achieve wide distribution. Also, 90% of the time you will never notice a fragrance has been reformulated.

They actually don't change the scent but do chance the ingredients to make it less potent (low projection, low sillage, low longitivity) then the original releases. So, that customers are force to spray more, run out of flask pretty fast and buy other.>>11724556

maybe you should read my fucking post before you reply. e.g. Serge Lutens and Malle had no incentive to reformulate their fragrances other than the IFRA breathing over their necks. i wouldn't put it above houses like YSL to neuter their fragrances so people buy more and spray more, but not everything's a corporate fucking conspiracy for cash. yes frags are constantly reformulated but any decent house will attempt to preserve the scent's character and performance.

For any of you who wanna try a wide variety of fragrances but don't wanna spend a lot of money there's a site called Perfume parlour, they basically make copies of fragrances but for cheap prices like £5 for a 13ml sprayer. Wearing Kouros for the first time today. Goddamn this is perfect sprayed just out of the shower. By the time you step out of the house the top will have burned off and it becomes a very masculine, musky scent.

I do get the restroom reference, but that's more of the lemony aldehydes having something in common with urinal cakes. That in combination with the civet gives that covered-up piss reference (not literal smelling like piss). But given time to dry down it's actually soapy and powdery and clean, yet manly at the same time. Very 80s.

Wearing this gives a middle finger to all modern aquatic/sport fragrances.

About to go on a first date soon, and I've been contemplating what to wear. I think my best option would be Versace Pour Homme, it's a very light and inviting fragrance that regularly garnishes compliments. I really enjoy Paco Rabanne's Invictus although it seems to have a fair bit of notoriety and I wouldn't want to risk making a poor impression. Azzaro Visit also seems like a suitable candidate, not a fragrance I've encountered in public. It has a bit of a feminine nuance to it which I believe
this person may appreciate. Tommy by Tommy
Hilfiger seems a bit too sporty and over bearing
for a casual night out, so I think it'd be safe to rule out. My other frags I'd consider to be off the table are Davidoff Zino and Azzaro Onyx.
Zino has a very rich woodsy and dark essence
that would seem inappropriate for both
occasion and season. Onyx is ungodly musky.

Based on your list of samples and haves, I don't think you have the breadth of experience to make that call. You could just say "I guess I don't like vetiver" and accept that you are interested mallcore fragrance and internet meme lists more than actual perfumery.

>want to try

If you're serious about getting into fragrance (you keep a fragrance spreadsheet and type using semicolons on Bosnian imitation perfumery irc servers; it looks like you're serious), the best thing you can do is to buy a 5ml spray decant of that TFGV and wear it for a few weeks straight, day and night. See how it treats you. If you want to substitute Guerlain Vetiver, go for it. But either way, you're not a man until you love vetiver.

As an aside, I'm not all that versed with smells in general because I had great difficulty breathing through my nose for most of my life. And Grey Vetiver hit me like a shot of distilled pine resin straight up my nose. No, I am not going to wear something that makes me feel ill and congested just to try and build a tolerance to it. I'm sure my tastes will drift but not because I'm training them.
