Tips on how to make a 12.4 m2 room in a shared apartment even remotely tolerable?

>> No.11502628

Custom open wardrobe.
Biggest bed you can fit and six duvets.
No colors allowed.

>> No.11502646

Take full advantage of the height of the room for shelving
There's a bed frame on Amazon that doesn't require a box spring and allows for a lot of storage under the frame
Go to a thrift store and buy filing cabinets. They're empty shells for storage and make for a very compact table. Also they're generally able to be stacked on top of one another
Get a few potted plants to make the room feel alive. They're under ten dollars and available in any big box store or grocery store

>one minimalist hanger to hang my coat, shirts and the like
>one table to eat
>one foldable couch/bed

any tips?

>> No.11507465

You'll get there. Assuming you aren't too concerned about getting a huge place, places like that can generally be had for about $3k/mo. or so, which isn't awful.

Case in point, joints like this are popping up in DC with some regularity:

>> No.11507467

hey nice room !!
what's that thing your beds on ?? may i ask

>> No.11507470

idk, $300 000 might do it.
you put 30k down, and then get a reallly long mortgage, and instead of paying rent you pay 800/month to bank. then you literally never pay it off, but sell it later and get some of your money back

>> No.11507489

Unlikely. You'll need more in a good city for a nice view. 300k may buy you a very small condo in a decent city, but probably not in an amazing location. Floors with better views often have nicer apartments as people will pay a premium for the view. Then you have to pay for remodelling and nice furniture, and condo fees on top of your mortgage.

what are you talking about, 3k a month is extortion

isn't rent supposed to be at max 33% of your income? renting a place like that, i would need to make over 100k NET. most people will never make that kind of cash, especially here. even in your example of a DC apt at 670sqft, it's still 2k, which is over 70k net. but most people pay well over 33% because they have to.

Low bed frames aren't that versatile imo. They work if the room is spacious or the other furniture fits. Imagine a big wardrobe next to this bed towering above for example.

They look good when it works but it's hard to make it work.

In my experience getting a bed with storage underneath for clothes is one of the most space saving things you can do. Just add a clothes rack for shirts, jackets etc. A clothes rack is also much less fussy about where it can be placed vs a wardrobe.

Be careful with pallets. Unless you want to go full unfinished wood and linen everywhere, it might end up looking really out of place. If you have a box spring (I can't tell from the photo), just get legs and maybe a headboard. Cover everything with a white cotton/linen bed skirt, and you'll still have storage space. Since you have white baseboards/framing, maybe get some art/posters/printed shit in plain white frames, or have accent furniture in white. Get some wall art regardless. Since it's a small room, try not to clutter it with stuff. I love your wall colour btw. My dining room is a really light blue.

ikea or etsy will have them for hilariously high prices only a literally retarded person would consider acceptable

you can just get the wood at home depot but to get the rustic weathering you have to:
>select a board that shows the heart grain pattern you want
>re-finish the surface by ripping over it with a large coarse circular blade, or a large and very coarse sanding disk
>weather it in the sun and rain for weeks/months depending on the wood and original treatment
>varnish, revisit with sandpaper

the genuine article is something like rough ripped native wood originally used in construction 100+ years ago. with age, the wood greys inside and blackens on the outside like that

the shelves over the bed were salvaged from a potentially 100+ year old building. they appear to have been the equivalent of the 2x4 studs we use today (not sure why one of them looks to be 8 inches wide). the white lines at regular intervals were the gaps in between the pre-drywall slats where plaster was applied as a filler

I'm renovating two rooms in my mom's 170 year old house right now, hopefully I'll be able to reclaim enough aged lumber to build a few pieces for my new house

you shouldn't have to share a 600sqft apartment at 35, and you shouldn't have to make 70k after taxes, as an educated professional, to afford a small room. fucks sake

Etsy offers some at very high prices, likely easier to do yourself and just get some hairpin legs

Get different sheets. White would go well. Furniture should be dark brown to fit with what is already there. Some drawers would be good so you can begin to remove all of the clutter. Maybe get a bedsite table (wood and glass) and but some stuff on it - plant, magazine, stereo remote.

>> No.11524446

Thanks, which furniture do you mean though? I'll sort through my stuff (I have way too much) then I think in the end it can fit in my existing drawers. And yep I'm about to go and get new sheets and comforters, thank you

Go to a textile shop and just ask for sheer fabric for curtains.

My local shop had a whole section last time I went.

I'm joking of course, but I prefer Japanese bonsai

That guy posts on /g/, sometimes gives advice about plants. I remember him saying that he's lazy and sometimes takes the plants down and puts them in the shower to water them.

I'm guessing the windows open towards his own property, and are facing such that he doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight.

one of the many homes (bought multiple floors of a building in tribeca, or the whole building, can't remember, back when ny was going to shit and semi-normal people could do such a thing) of a well known furniture designer, artist, and art collector.

the van rietveld chair in the background should have been a hint.
