I have the same Ikea desk. It's great, and cheap, but is too modern for the rest of your room I think. Pick up something secondhand, something with authentic textures. Or build your own diy pipe frame desk with reconditioned wood topper. You could pick up some old barn siding and sand it down nice and smooth + stain it.

Pardon the small picture for ants, but you get the idea. Cost, $10 (if you get random free stuff around) to 60-75.

The chair is very bulky, and the wood frame is super thick with heavy forms. Takes too much space in your already limited area. Does it get much use, like really?

If you really need seating get something lighter, lighter in weight, lighter visually, smaller footprint.

It'll be less comfortable but you must suffer for your fashion.

Doesn't have to be this, but you get the idea. Something mid-century ish, lighter and simpler all around.

Once I can move it back to where it was originally in the house (due to construction) I will consider another type of chair, or perhaps none.

I will look into more of those chairs like your pic related, of course second hand, like everything else in this room. Most of my furniture was free actually.

So you wanna display nerd shit you spend hundreds of dollars on. Look into something like this. It doesn't need to be as wide. It can take a small footprint like the one you have now. You could even fashion on from reclaimed shit if you're handy.

IF you absolutely WANT pallets/found material furniture or IF you have NO CHOICE, then SEAL them with polyurethane sealant/shellac. Get that shit on with a paintbrush, and make it an inch thick. It's gonna take forever to dry but it's the only to protect yourself.

Building one yourself it honestly the best way. There are literally hundreds of diy tutorials everywhere, for every budget.

You can also thrift, craiglist, and look at second hand stores. You still have to be diligent and inspect well, but you can at least know that usually the wood is of better quality than pallet shit and it's been better taken care or/treated/pre-sealed/not left outside for weeks.

Anything metal or plastic may not suit your tastes but are generally safer.

Store bought particle board stuff (ikea, etc) can be fine. I don't really like them because they're actually quite brittle and is very heavy. But it's cheap, and if you buy into the ikea flatpack meme then you know it's already sterile.

I'd rather sleep on the floor than ikea. those frames are trash and I've never seen a single product of ikea that didn't create some headache, minor or major, due to terrible design/idiotic degenerations of good design to avoid getting in trouble for ripping shit off (ie their fucking 4-legged alto stool). even their glass cups fucking suck

I've got a japanese futon, so slatted frames are out of the question. Single panel wood at that size is impossible to find and very expensive to custom order

I don't mind spending dosh on it but I'll be moving apartments yearly for the next few years so anything I invest in will need to be taken apart and transported easily.

I'd just order tatami mats but they look dumb isolated on hardwood and I want to give my bed a decent lift. I've considered just getting another hard mattress to put under it. my ideal would be donald judd's daybed with a much lower wall and not mirrored

Love the plants and books.
Suggestions would be to frame the pictures above your bed, structure loose items and either get rid of stuff you barely use or can do without, or hide them in drawers.
Also cable management can make a huge difference in aesthetics. Use zip-ties and/or velcro to bind cables together and hide them behind the desk, desklegs etc.

Also, where did you get that bookstand under the bookshelves and next to the lamp? I've been looking forever for such a thing.

even their dishware, like goddamn how do manage to fuck up something so simple so badly? I had basic glasses just for drinks. tulip cups can't fit your hand in to clean them, tall glasses manage to break just wiping them clean. pathetic.

with a little bit of research you can find the same items for the same price or cheaper with much higher quality and design that's withstood generations - ie my drink cups are german and japanese, my tea cups are indian chai glasses, my espresso cups mid century american. sure it takes some time and a little hunting, but it's ultimately cheaper immediately and lasts so much longer that the prices don't even begin to compare.

let alone their janky ass tables, chairs, stools, lamps. ikea is for the lazy and those tryhard idiots susceptible to marketed "design" over actual design, i.e. stuff they're told is 'good design' over 'stuff that actually isn't a constant minor headache to use in practice but looks nice at first glance'.

ikea is like zara or h&m for furniture, their trash lasts you half a season at best. may god have mercy on those sorry souls who actually pay out for their more durable, more overpriced home pieces, i.e. not just a $20 lack table but a $200 desk. there was a time when furniture was passed down from generation to generation, not thrown out between one year's lease to another's. the outcome of those times appear on craiglist for you to cop

It's a pretty common sentiment, though, that we're in a dark age of user interface design. Extreme lack of variety and innovation, outdated paradigms, terrible optimization and just low quality delivery in general. Have you ever used Siri? It's absurd how much basic functionality is missing.
It's mostly due to the nature of apps being heavily susceptible market momentum and copyright protection abuse.

I've also made the mistake of owning two of their table lamps in the past. Both had trouble with basic balancing on the head, inconveniently place light switches and little reasonable direct cover from the bulb. It's things you can't really predict in the store without a bulb actually in there.

For something like a table lamp at that price, Target and Macy's offer better alternatives in similar styles.

But also the majority of Ikea's catalogue besides the adils table and billy bookshelf are hideous. Apparently no one told normalfags there's a difference between "minimal" and "good design". Muji, for example, does it right
