Depends on the jacket. 550 fill means 550 cm^2 per ounce of down. You could have barely any 550 down in a coat and it be freezing or put loads into a fluffy coat and it be very warm. Pic related should be fine with layering if you're just visiting, but if you're going to live somewhere in northern europe (im guessing you mean scandinavia) then just buy a bigger, more expensive parka. 550 is fine for a parka too

Hey /fa/.

I'm looking for an extreme cold weather parka for winter as where I live requires that kind of clothing. I've been looking at some of the more expensive ones and comparing them to U.S. Army surplus ones and I am wondering if I really need to pay the extra $100 for the North Face label?

I'm not saying I don't want the label, but my question is, what does North Face do to their $250 parka that a $150 army surplus cold and wet weather parka does not?

tbh I ususally wear L/XL but my Bedale is a medium
Oh and if you have a J Crew near you check there too; I was in a J Crew last week and they had Barbour jackets...but the employee at the store told me that every store dictates which third-party products are stocked. So you might not see them at your local J Crew
>>10521825
It's a midweight jacket (with the inner liner, purchased separately [and if it matters to you, made in Indonesia, not the UK])
I have a Bedale with the inner liner; want the hood too but haven't pulled the trigger yet
It got me through last winter pretty well; I thought it was pretty warm
The jacket loses its wax coating depending on use; the employee at the Barbour store told me that you can mail it back to them for one free re-coating
Then you're charged for all of the subsequent re-coatings (or you can buy a can of the wax and do it yourself lol; they sell it through Orvis and other Barbour retailers)
I've had mine for a year and it still looks brand new

So I just moved to Boulder Colorado and honestly I think I need to upgrade to a warmer jacket if I'm gonna continue biking. It was about 40-50 yesterday and even though I was just wearing a t-shirt and a Uniqlo parka, I still imagine that my usual warm stuff (Gloverall Duffel Coat and/or Spiewak field jacket) won't be enough when I'm biking about 10 minutes to class.
