That's mostly what fashion is based on. Designers riff on classic utilitarian designs.

The military and biker influence is nothing new for Balmain either. Christophe Decarnin revitalized the label with that particular aesthetic in 2006. Helmut Lang drew heavily on the same themes in the mid/late '90's.

Additionally, fashion is cyclical. It's the reason you see clothing typical of a certain decade re-emerge about twenty years later. The 2000's saw a resurgence in '80's styles like neon and shutter shades. These days it's '90's styles that are back in fashion. Normcore is built around that decade and musicians and actors like Mac Demarco are adopting the look.

Recycling is nothing new and I'm surprised you haven't noticed it before.

I love parts of their aesthetic but they do tend to go over the top on a lot of pieces. That's part of the point because their whole thing is charging more than almost any other fashion house so they have to make the stuff instantly recognizable.

I preferred Decarnin's collections because they were a bit more subdued, but Rousteing has definitely made his own mark on the classic pieces. Some of the asian influenced stuff from a few years ago was cool and the beaded jackets from SS15 are stunning.

for me the point of designer clothing is owning an original piece from the house's collection, going through their distribution (even if it's made in bangladesh as well), bought from their prices (even if I buy it off grailed).
buying a designer through H&M just misses the whole point for me, because they had a say in their designs or the designer thought of the average H&M customer when designing the collection.
