Right outside Boston, but I can kind of understand. I never really made a lot of effort to make friends with people and I'm also quiet and ugly. I think one of my bigger disappointments was a Rick wool hooded sweater, but I still wore it. More recently the low Ramones in reverse leather have been disappointing me mostly because they are fucking paaaainful to wear. Too stiff and heavy.

From what I've read in these threads most people here just love the feel of his garments. There's more to clothing than just the style or looks. Part of the Rick appeal is how damned comfy his shit and the quality of his fabrics is still amazing, even if it has slipped a bit.

I think some would agree with you that Owens has fallen off as a designer but I think many more would say that he has had only a few mediocre collections in the long span of the label. Sphinx was seen by many as a cohesive collection and a return to form for him.

Pugh's designs were largely unwearable, which meant he made no money and had to rely on Rick and Lamy to bankroll all his collections. He's been forced to design a ready to wear collection to try and make a bit of money but it's so watered down. The stuff he does for the runway is amazing, but it's art and not marketable fasion. I don't feel Pugh vs Ricki is not really a good comparison.

Ann D left her own label and there was a noticeable decline in the creative output. The label has obviously fallen off more than Rick Owens.

BBS is great, but he's fallen off as well. He started with some really cool and revolutionary designs and materials, then created a diffusion line for cash flow. The 11 line was largely a response to Damir Doma's success with the Silent line. He was kinda late to the bandwagon though and the prices on BBS mainline have grown obnoxious over the years. I like a lot of his mainline from year to year but unlike Rick, I wouldn't really spring for either his mainline (too pricey) or his diffusion (pricey and more streetwear vibe).

I guess it just seems like you're picking three big name dark designers without knowing a lot about any of them. To say that any of those three are doing better fashion work than Rick at this time is silly.

I'm super down to talk about other designers though. I remember one of these Rick general threads branched out a lot from just RO and people were receptive. Is that cool?

most of what owens shows on the runway i feel is far more unwearable than pugh; it's occupies this middle ground between art and fashion and tries to take the best of both worlds but i feel blase minimalism meets hyper-cerebral cozy boy which, i guess, just doesnt do it for me, cohesive designer for sure yes, but i guess i'd rather see art in cloth or utilitiarian clothing than a melding of the two. i should have specified im talking Ann D. before she left. this new dude is not doing it for me at all. rick is way better now than ann is now (which breaks my heart)
and BBS is cool (ooh, points for you remembering damir, i knew i was thinking of someone else throughout today but couldn't remember who), but the diffusion line thing has become a stale formula over the years that im sad to see BBS and Doma (and Rick!) have used.

rick is doing big things for sure. but this feels like when kanye dropped yeezus and tried to pass it off as this high-brow conceptual art album when i felt it wasn't anything new really or enjoyable really. but art is polarizing, i personally know a ton of people who love rick and i respect them for that.

if we're talking dark though, if you are nyc area, go to dover street and get some greg lauren. i am admittedly a big fan.

(one more thing, yohji is king of dark designers, no matter how far he's fallen off with the whole adidas collab frenzy)

I actually think he dropped off after Mountain (Womens), the clothes have become much less livable and more theatrical, I don't care much for the mens, i usually just buy the basics/staples for comfort. Further reinforcing this is the fact barely anyone talks about his seasonal based pieces in these threads they usually talk about things he has had for years like pods, prisoners, geo's and the tees. Also those other labels aren't that comparable, they might be 'dark' lablels but they have different codes to follow and silhouettes. Yes Gareth is doing great work but could you really compare his last collection to Ricks this season? Would also agree Raf has dropped off since joining Dior, his collections at Jil were so much better (also womenswear) I actually like his new mens stuff though, i just think its way too far ahead of the curve for /fa/, we'll look back on it in 10 years time like we do his archive work now and like it, that really all part of being avant garde ie ahead of the curve. Also Jacquemus is nice but its very easy to see his influences like MMM and CDG, he's sort of like the mainline thats the diffusion line for old and new MMM and CDG.

besides geo's and the tee's it's just as unwearable as anything else. fashion has a lot of that though, so that's ok.

yes pugh's last show was kind of not good and not comparable to owens at all, but they strike me as similar-ish designers. raf at jil was sent from heaven, not a massive fan of his menswear since starting at dior, but i will admit it makes me think more. fw 15 raf was dope.
i don't think it's an issue that jacq inspires from margiela and kawakubo, two of my long-time favorites to be honest., but what he is doing is in my opinion far different from either (margiela especially)

I actually think the diffusion lines make a whole lot of sense. Drkshdw is amazing in its own right. It's become less of a diffusion than a co-existing line with a focus on different materials. There are plenty of pieces and styles that are only found in Drkshdw, like some of the graphic pieces. Rick/Drkshdw reminds me of Julius_7/MA where Horikawa tried to shape MA Julius as more of a tangent than a diffusion.

Damir Doma has done amazing things with Silent and I think he did a great job designing basics that walk the line of streetwear well still remaining minimal like the sneakers.

I just feel like Saberi goes even a little more streetwear/skater/tech with his 11 line and I don't see as big a market for it. He's also charging too much for the quality of the garments.

Greg Lauren intrigues me to no end, but he always comes off as a bit comical. I said in anther thread It's like if Ann D and Paul Harnden had an American civil war obsessed child who ran away and joined a gang of Dickensian pickpockets. It's fun stuff to look at but It lacks the wearability of someone like Harnden who keeps his stuff uncluttered enough to work on a modern street.

Re-read that and tell me you dont sound like you are completely unconfident in your claims. You constantly have to remind us, that what you're writing is your opinion and yours only. If you're going to make all these big claims about Rick's degradation and BBS/Pugh being legitimate designers you're going to have to actually back it up and not just Dance around it. Be confident in your opinions and statements otherwise you sound like you're just parroting what others have said in the past.

I'm very willing to discuss designers but not when you're making these claims that turn out to be completely hollow.
