Warehouse or Samurai, for sure. Classic cuts, extremely high quality denim, and all the necessary detailing: back pocket rivets, selvedge, raised beltloops, non-felled inseams. Warehouse is more conservative in their styling but both can be dressed up or down.

Iron Heart and Flat Head with extremely honorable mentions.

Thanks, I've been in the Japanese Denim game for years now so I have a pretty decent sense of what makes a good pair of jeans though I'm still no expert. These are my rankings for brands I've tried.

High tier:
Samurai: Arguably the pinnacle of japanese denim. Huge variety, so they have the fit/cut/weight/details for everyone. Can be difficult to find domestically, so Rakuten is recommended if you don't have >$300
Flathead: Legendary fades, also makes fantastic shirts with some really nice details like mother-of-pearl or obsidian snaps. They are also the only denim retailer that consistently manufactures zippered styles which appeals to some.
Warehouse: Durable and very reasonably priced for what you're getting. A lot of retailers offer lifetime repairs, so shop around. A good baseline if you don't know what to pick.
Iron Heart: The best choice for heavyweight. A pair of 634S could easily last the rest of your life just by taking care of the crotch and hems.
Pure Blue Japan: Legendary denim, characteristically "slubby" meaning uneven, with some interesting options such as blue warp and weft

OK Tier:
Strike Gold: Unimpressive fit, denim similar to but less interesting than PBJ
Dry Bones: Great denim and detailing but weird fits, rises so low castration is easier
Levis STF: Cheap, for a reason. Missing most details, not even with button fly, but with the fit right can look as good as a $200 pair of jeans treated correctly

Shit Tier:
Nudies: Don't let the marketing rope you in. Low quality denim with ugly fades, poor detailing, construction. Fits are god-tier off the rack but won't last a month
APC: Unsure if these are still popular but were the top choice for babbys first raws in the past. Ugly steel blue color, stupid thin beltloops, retarded sizing nobody gets right even instore, needs repairs extremely quickly, front pockets too shallow to hold even a pen, they basically exist just for show.

Skull

For the most part it is, but Flat Head for example is known specifically for having high-contrast vertical fading which is what interests most people in raw denim in the first place, to be fair. Nudies on the other hand don't fade very strikingly but sell lots of pre-washed jeans to promote that part of their brand. But I tried not to focus on fading for my post because I agree that it's the most variable part of the experience.

It's possible they changed them since the last time I had a pair from the brand. Never tried petit standard and unlikely I ever will because of my negative experience with their NS.

>> No.10427914

>>10427888
The majority of Naked & Famous are shit, some of what they put out can be mid tier. Their less fashion-forward stuff can be a reasonable value even though it won't match up to a true pair of Japanese raws.

Don't know anything about Rogue Territory firsthand, sorry. From skimming their website some of the details were nice and they hit the two most important ones (selvedge, rear rivets) but I don't think the beltloops were raised which I'm a huge fan of though at least they are sewn into waistband. The denim itself is likely nothing special, probably midtier overall. They looked pretty unremarkable and didn't offer anything I couldn't get somewhere else for the same price.

Again, no firsthand experience so this is just judging on my impressions looking at the page for "Ace Raw Gothic" on their website.

Possibly midtier, likely shittier. Fairly fashion-forward and more concerned with making a "fashionable" cut/fit than high quality garment. The distinction is kind of hard to pin down but there are some giveaways. They don't have backpocket rivets or many other details, which are generally a good indicator of quality because rivets in particular significantly increases the amount of time it takes to make each pair of jeans, and since it's a fairly difficult process the overall manufacturing quality is generally higher. They don't show any pictures besides fit pic, so you don't get any look at the interior quality stitching/denim weave/detailing/selvedge line. They don't spend any time covering denim weight or origin and it's not 100% cotton so the quality is likely mediocre at best. The price of 220 USD is frankly ridiculous for what you're getting. When you can buy this for $170: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/hinoya/item/900_or/ or this for $190: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/bears/item/skulljeans-5010xx/ (pics are unhemmed btw) both exceptional pairs of jeans and have money left over so I wouldn't recommend acne unless there's something I'm missing completely about the brand.

Try a pair of looser-fitting warehouse or samurai. Measure your existing jeans to get a baseline, and if its your first time ordering online order a size larger than you think you need as a rule of thumb. Loose is ok, too tight sure as fuck isn't. I'm rocking a pair of organic cotton samurai 5000s at the moment and the fit is very relaxed - I've put on 10LB in the past month (whiskey and bacon will do that quickly) but they still fit without any issues, probably better than they did without the weight even though it's not my goal.

Nothing is "wrong" with them per-se. It's not like your jeans should have any chance of splitting apart at the seams regardless of how they were constructed. It takes more skill to perform a single stitch than a felled seam so again, it's generally indicative of higher quality even though it's not a high end detail. Felled seams are not as appealing to most people since it alters the way the jean is constructed and how it fades in a number of ways, also it looks a lot nicer to have a single stitch than "faking" it as many felled seams do with a single contrast stitch and the rest of the stitches meant to match the denim color.

3Sixteen is a good midtier option. Reasonable details, reasonable quality denim, not a fan of their 6-beltloop design (two on the rear), but decent overall and can be found on sale as low as $100 with luck.

I have a pair of their khaki denim which is great in summer because it's pretty lightweight. I think most of their jeans are 14oz though which is pretty standard for year-round wear.

Levis 511 raw. If you go up to $150 you could probably find something good on eBay that's only been worn once or twice because they missized it.

>>10428846
You are not paying for the name AT ALL with these brands. They're pretty much unknown outside of japan and even there are pretty niche. Outside of rear arc designs it's pretty much impossible to identify them on the street. You can get cheaper pairs, sure, but you'll be skimping on something. Seriously, these are a nearly unbeatable value http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/hinoya/item/900_or/ at $170. You can spend $350 if you want but you'll be getting something really special like a limited edition pair of extra heavy Iron Hearts, gold plated anniversary Samurai, Flat Head collaborations, or other things that increase cost for a small run.

To intimate that I don't know my shit when it comes to denim is insulting. "Japanese Denim" as a meme is that shitty brands will claim that their jeans are "made with japanese denim" and the consumer falsely expects the quality to equal top brands due to the country of origin. Stay mad with your APC french trash.

I used to be a fan of Nudie jeans but for the price they go to shit way too quickly. My black long johns have faded horribly and have lost the original shape after 6 months of wear. I've got a pair of Naked and Famous which have faired way better and aren't threadbare on the knees and pockets like my nudies.

The main thing is to find raw that fits properly in the rise, seat and thighs. Everything from mid thigh down including i.e. the knee calfs and hem can be altered easily and affordably by any tailor. Make sure to have them taper from the inseam and not the outseam if you care about keeping the selvedge tag intact. Pants as shown can easily be altered to look less dadcore and more modern.

Im a guy with an "hour glass shape", my waist is skinny but I have huge ass and thighs. It's pretty hard finding slim tapered jeans that isn't too tight and fits comfortably.

The best jeans I've found is Levi's 522. The high rise I think is the key to it being comfortable.

Anybody have other slim jeans recommendations for guys with tiny waist but big ass/thighs?

>> No.10431704

>>10431665
Rakuten will have the largest selection and best prices since it's an aggregate retailer so there's the most competition. I don't know what tapered styles are available offhand because I usually wear straight cuts. Your best bet is to just take your time and browse until you find a style you like. I know that sugarcane calls their models the year of the levis cut they're imitating, samurai and warehouse modelno are specific to the brand.

As previously noted, Japan Blue and Kojima are two brands that offer a good selection of styles for around the $100 mark.

So I tried the raw denim thing last fall with some cheap levi 505s in rigid (no bully pls, they were <$30) and wasn't a big fan but I want to try it again since I can't find blue jeans with fades/washes I like. Main issue was that I felt like an idiot wearing jeans a size too big for several months so I'm leaning towards a reasonably priced sanforized pair. Looking at the unbranded skinny or taper since they're the only ones in a brick & mortar near me but do you guys have any more reqs? I read the thread and I don't want to drop three figures on jeans I haven't tried on, e.g. Japan Blues.

There aren't a ton of options for slim/skinny raws in the sub $100 range to begin with, even less when you have to try them on. I just want one black and one blue pair of raws, that are loose enough to squat in (I wouldn't obviously work out in them I just don't like wearing super tight jeans) while still being nicely tapered below the knee. That and overall minimal detailing in terms of stitching and the like.
