I see where you're coming from with this argument, but times have changed, and so has the concept of fashion. Sure, most new age garments that attempt to have a distressed style are much worse in quality than classics such as the suit, and that's because these new pieces are much harder to make. Fashion has become much more experimental in the past years, and it's arguable that it's become a contest of who can be the most special snowflake. But then again, you have to remember that some designers have succeeded in creating luxury pieces that might be a bit less "traditional" than what you would expect. There's a reason that Rick is praised here, and it's because he's pushing the limits of fashion while keeping to high quality standards. We've become a society which is much less unified than it was before because of freedom of expression continuing to encourage us to stray from the norm, which is why "menswear" might seem irrelevant to most people on effay today. Always makes me smile when people claim that suits are formal. What makes a suit formal is the tie and, at least to some extend, belt and shoes. Other than that a suit is completely normal piece of cloth. Hell, look at high fashion cat walks. Half the models of well known labels run around in suits. However, they combine suiting with striking shirts, casual shoes and other fancy things. The result is a bunch of outfits that is anything but formal and probably looks more casual than a business casual look.

Suits arent formal per se. Its the things you wear with the suit that makes it formal.

As much as it is denied, how formal/casual something is has to do with how socially acceptable it is perceived for an occasion. Like it or not, this is determined by other people. The problem with this board is that it's not about fashion, it's about people who want to dress themselves.

So it dissolves into easy styles that people can rinse and repeat because the loudest voice isn't the "try your own thing and figure it out" voice, it's the "you look like shit, you look like a cuck" voice that basically forces the people with an entry level interest in fashion into a shitty box so that they can think they look decent, instead of developing a real sense of style.

Furthermore, most of the people with their own senses of fashion don't post here anymore at all because of the previous point.

The only difference I can see was that back then this board was more friendly to people new to fashion, maybe because there was no sticky yet and image dumps of guides were special occasions. The guides from back then get a lot of shit for being boring and 'dadcore' but at least they happened and people were generally helpful, especially tripfags. I can't get into how /fa/ dresses today because I don't even know where to start. Maybe I'm just too old though and it's just not my style.

Anyway I don't really see any reason to browse this board nowadays unless you wanna circlejerk about your new rick owens. New people and guys who don't know what they're doing yet seem to get ignored mostly, at least that's my impression, but only come here on occasion nowadays.

I think there are two simultaneous threads: one in which people actually want a "return" to a "better /fa/" and another in which people ask why can't /fa/ be good--what are the historic constraints, was there ever a good period to review and replicate, etc. Hopefully there is a shift to that latter, constructive mode. Unfortunately I'm, for one, just not here nearly enough to try and have a lasting effect on quality.

I don't think it's arguable that the waywt quality has gone down over time due to people "graduating" out of here.

People just stop posting fits online, nothing more to it. Styleforum was first, then came other boards and now its 4chinz. I dont know why shit his the fan, but if I had to guess I would assume that its the cheap availablity of clothes and the rise of fast fashion through brands like Zara and Primark.

I dont wanna bitch about young users but there also is a significant difference between old and new users, on almost any forum. It used to be common to browse a forum before you post. Accustom yourself to the stuff that is common and try to learn by watching and then, when you learned the basics, you start to post yourself. Basically lurking as we would call it. This has become way less common and especially new users tend to immediately post without having the slightest clue what the fuck is going on.

Stuff like that doesnt only happen here. You can observe is anywhere. Styleforums old WAYWT basically was invaded by a bunch of college freshmen twinks who kept insulting most of the more mature users which resulted in the adults leaving and the younger posters staying behind, swimming in their own shit.

where do people go for real, useful male fashion advice?
I just go on reddits FMF for deals, sales and offers.

for instance, fall is already here and I have yet to see an inspiration/ outfits thread... this place is good for a laugh or a circlejerk (when you want to fit in and feel like you're in a group for once) but when it comes to practical advice it's pfffft.

The owners of boutiques are almost always willing to chat about new stuff they're getting in, events they're throwing, the clothes you and they are wearing etc. I've been shopping at a boutique store called Apartment here in Brisbane for about a year now (maybe a purchase every month) and after about six months he started giving me random discounts and invites to parties
