Thoughts on Oliver Peoples? I need a new pair of optical glasses.

I've got my eye on the Oliver Peoples Riley in Cocobolo. Thoughts?

Also optical general.

They're not made by Luxxotica you pleb, they're just owned by Luxxotica.

Luxxotica own something stupid like 85% of the worlds optical brands, so unless you get some bespoke frames everything is going to have ties with them.

All the companies owned by Luxxotica continue to operate independently using their own designs/materials/factories.

It's like anything in fashion, one major conglomerate owns lots of smaller brands. Pic related.

Smaller operated 'luxury' brands don't really make that much as they produce in small batches and don't tend to market/advertise themselves as much. They generally rely on the quality of their product to speak for itself and word-of-mouth/press for publicity.

It's people like LV who get away with murder charging £1,000+ for a handbag when they're mass produced in factories in China out of canvas. They can spend millions on advertising shilling their shit products to otherwise unknowing customers. No wonder they're the most profitable fashion house.

The real luxury is in smaller scale, niche, bespoke brands. Who actually care about the craft and love that goes in their products. Not something that's churned out of a factory.

Oliver People's do a bespoke service if you go to their store in LA. You can choose your own acetate/lenses/shape etc.

All glasses not just Oliver Peoples are measured that way. They'll have markings on the arm which will be something like this:

45-20-145

The first number is the width of the lenses, the second number is the width of the bridge (the bit inbetween each lense), and the third number is the length of the arm.

Sometimes they might give you the width and height of the lenses so you can judge pretty well how big the frame will be.

I think that because darker tortoise shells are often almost black/caramel colored, that they can probably work with a black-dominant or brown-dominant outfit. Black goes with black, I think. So I'd say tortoise is the way to go. It's also evocative of the 60s fashion hey day, and legendary actors like McQueen.

Lighter tortoiseshell are harder to pull off and so are clear frames. I'd stick to a darker tortoiseshell for most outfits.

Don't buy goofy coloured frames either. Just go black and brown.

It depends on your prescription. If it's too strong, go for contacts, because you will look goofy in even the most perfect frames.

Any of you still care for the Ray Ban name, even if its owned by luxxotica?

Just had to get this pair, theyre really comfortable to wear given that the arms are wide meaning the frames dont leave the face even when looking downwards

Looks like I finally need glasses guys. Looking to get an eye exam soon and get a pair of glasses.

I also happen to find a pair of ray bans so I was thinking of using those for my first glasses but my guess is that you guys aren't very fond of them and they aren't effay.

Pic related is what I have. Keep this or sell and get another pair?

Slightly confused here as to which ones to get. They look practically identical. The colour is the same 'cocobolo' and the measurements are 49-20 and 49-21.

Why have they made two glasses which are almost alike?

Is there a massive amount of difference between 45, 47, 49mm etc. on the size of lense?

They only have a 49mm in my local shop of the style I want. But I can order all sizes online.

2mm seems almost negligible, does it completely alter the shape of the frame though?

>> No.10106589

If the bridge size stays the same then it's just the size of the diameter of the lens in mm. It can change the shape, so on a round lens it will be more elongated.

Why deprive yourself of an entire world of fashionable eyewear if you have the choice? But yeah, get different frames
>>10110982
This seems more accurate. Maybe if you shine a bright light through them those ambers will show but from what I've seen its a darker frame with streaks of yellow, which doesn't look very good imo

>> No.10111545

>>10111528
Doesn't look very good? Why so? What's a better tortoiseshell colours from OP?

>> No.10111643

>>10111545
Personal preference really. I think it's a bit jarring of a color scheme. Like they fucked up making black frames. I just prefer warmer colored tortoise frames really. The moss tortoise isn't bad, more of a subtle mix. Still fairly dark with a green tinge which isn't shown very well on their site.

>> No.10111686

>>10111643
The frames I want only come in black, buff, and then these three shades of tortoise.

Top = amaretto/honey which is a bit too light.

Middle = matte moss, don't really like the dull finish, would be nice if they were glossy.

Bottom = cocobolo

Tbh I think the cocobolo is probably the best choice for this frame. Either that or black, but I'm not a massive fan of black frames.

As a general rule if you're blonde/ginger get lighter frames. If your brunette/darker then go for a darker tortoiseshell like >>10110982 or black.
