This is currently what I'm doing with my hair. I've gone messier, recently, after discovering that it doesn't turn out so bad with hair tousling but usually, if I want it to remain slick and tight, I give it 30 minutes with comb and brush and liberal putty use.

I have that haircut and used the OP image as a reference for the barber. Ask for a disconnected undercut. If your barber is really retarded then just tell them #2 on the sides and leave the top long and tell them to texturize the top so it's easier to style. Make sure to use pictures for reference and make sure you've been growing your hair out for maybe three months so there's a visible difference in length between the top and the sides. Use water-based pomade to style (they will sell you some for $15-20). Don't go to Supercuts if you can't help it. Go find some men's hair place.

Have similar if not exact haircut and I rub a pea-sized amount of gel through hair right after I shower then blow dry a bit so it's not dripping with water, but not completely dry either.

Use a comb with really thin bristles to comb the hair up or to the side. Then rub, I'd say about a fingertips worth of wax, through your fingers and run it through. Again, use thin comb to put up or side.

Finally, I just use hairspray to keep in place for the day but I can still adjust it a bit before the spray hardens.

Dunno if that helps but that's how my stylist was able to manage it (I also have thick hair) and that's how I manage it.
