please don't let this one die like the last one did.

we need more people to take responsibility for the threads, instead of just posting unfounded skincare speculation or asking questions without lurking beforehand - only to then abandon the thread.

a bit less egoism would be nice, for a change.

otherwise, those who actually contribute with lots of content will be discouraged -because, why bother? no one seems to care about that the content of the threads is there to help the people who need it.

What worked for me is sleeping on my back making sure that my face doesnt touch the pillow, using Cerave cleaner and moisturizer, stopped touching my face and my skin started getting remarkably better once i switched from the 5 blade razor to a double edge safety razor (it got rid of a lot of my skin irritation and razor burn/bumps on my neck; i got a Merkur double edge and a Taylor of Old bond Street shaving cream, which was kinda expensive upfront but Ive saved money in the long run)

Some tips and tricks I've accumulated in my short lifespan, however have proven useful to the point where my face will look better than girls with good makeup on:

>Change your pillow sheets every 2-3 days (using clean cotton t-shirts can do the trick), or lay a clean damp towel every night to sleep on
>Don't touch your face, ever.
>Stop eating mcdonalds, or anything that will leave you licking your fingers
>If thats too hard, just replace all your drinks with water. Easiest noob diet change ever, yet does monumental change
>If you are not already, look into being athletic: sweating does the skin wonders.

Only 19 years old but my face has only seen perhaps ~5 pimples in my entire lifetime. Genetics might have played a role but I've had these habits since I was 15

Get rid of Acne pronto. If you lactose intolerant stop drinking/eating that shit. Milk is not worth it and Im assuming you're not a /fit/izen.

Fix that diet and drink water until your piss is near clear everyday. Do this for the rest of your life. Your diet should be healthy balanced and include dark greens, carrots and Olive oil.

If your skin is dry with the above diet and near 0 acne then try a moisturizer. In fact just get a good daily routine. Reddit has a nice subreddit (Skincareaddiction I believe) for promoting healthy skin. You should check them out if your willing.

I had those exact same type of blemishes, I tried a ton of remedies too with minimal avail, here's what's worked for me.

buy a pair of facial scrubbing gloves, a bar cetaphil too, not the liquid kind.

when you're in the shower scrub you face with the gloves without adding cetaphil, scrub your face for a little while then wait a couple minutes for your pores to completely open up.

lather the gloves with cetaphil and proceed to scrub your face again, leave the cetaphil on for a couple minutes and then wash it off.

be careful to keep your eyes closed, it burns like a motherfucker.

1. Cleanse your face using a cotton dabbed in vegetable oil (removes any dirt wihtout damaging your skin).
2. Cleanse the oil away using a soap-free face cleanser. Roll your fingers lightly over your face without scrubbing.
3. Pat your skin dry using a clean towel.
4. Apply a lotion made for acne prone skin (this removes any minerals left on your skin by the water).
5. Moisturize either using a cream (make sure it doesn't contain ingredients that clog pores) or an oil (jojoba or other of the same type).
6. Locally apply tea tree essential oil (antiseptic) on any blemishes.

Do this every morning and every night. Never scrub your face using a mechanical scrubbing product (the ones that contain little balls / grains). You may use a chemical peeling (mask containing AHA / BHA), but never more than twice a month.

Skin cells take 30 days to regenerate. No matter what you do, you won't see the effects of it before a month has passed. So keep going at it - regularity is key.

>get out dry myself off with towel
>apply thayers witch hazel toner (no alcohol) with clean paper towel
>wait for face to dry, feels nice and tight like anons mum
>apply clean & clear dual action moisturizer and go on about my day.

Your favourite site is back.
http://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/wiki/sca_routine

here's my routine that works well for me, was fiddling with stuff a while ago and finally found a routine that really works for me

am:
rinse well with water (with cleanser if I was sweating in my sleep)
moisturizer (not sunscreen 'cause do you think I go outside?)

pm:
- cerave moisturizing cleanser http://amazon.com/dp/B000YJ2SKM
- neutrogena acne wash http://amazon.com/dp/B0014CU0SA
- chemichal exfoliant (usu only on nose/cheekbone area)
- pat dry
- cetaphil moisturizing cream http://amazon.com/dp/B00113HNB4

think I got the cetaphil at costco for like 10 bucks, also if you're really that poor you can get the dollar store equivalent of the neutrogena acne wash at the dollar store, they're both 2% salicylic acid so they basically do the same thing (and I've used both it's fine). acne washes are pretty drying so make sure to moisturize~

Most people use it as a toner, as it's said to have astringent properties. So I'd guess after washing, wait for it to dry and then apply moisturiser. I used to use a Boots one but it didn't really do much, it's an extra step in your routine so if it helps go ahead, if not, I wouldn't bother.

I'd try switching the moisturiser to something more heavy duty. Something in any of those products could also be breaking you out. Apply moisturiser in the evening as well, of course. To begin with.

I also wouldn't use both soap and face wash. Ditch the soap, it might be (and I'm almost certain it is) what's drying your face out in the first place. Just use face wash, see that the pH of it is between 3 and 5,6. But for the beginning, ditch the soap.

Also instead of paper towels you can try using your clean hands or a cotton pad. They're gentler.

Also try washing your face only in the evening, and using lukewarm (not hot) water in the morning. As it is you're basically going through a 'how to dry out your skin' checklist and doing all the things you shouldn't be doing.

See how it goes and report the results, cheers!

With the exception of a good daily moisturizer I would say no to any topicals and certain bizarre remedies you read about online. JUst keep it back to the basics.

Basically if your skin is fucked you may have crazy hormonal issues.

Try no fap for at least 3 months
Go to the gym and push yourself until your sweating considerably

Or you may have certain mineral deficiencies that are resulting in bad skin.

Try a good branded bio available zinc supplement and up the dosage a little.
Or if you want to go full on, get a hair mineral analysis and see what the fuck is happening inside you. This is a real long winded approach but can cure a lot of ailments

Another factor too consider is your organs are shit. In particular anything that filters what goes in your body.

Try doing a liver cleanse naturally with milk thistle or perhaps taking it one step further and doing a liver cleanse, with olive oil. That second one is intense but has proven results.

Thirdly, as a few people have already stated, diet. Whatever goes in your body has a large influence on how you look. Try cut out all sugar, if you are young this will be near impossible as your body likes having surges of energy for the stupid shit you like doing.
Besides that, try cut down on chocolate and foods high in copper, things like mushrooms and organ meats, this disturbs the zinc / copper ratio and can result in poor skin.

Lifestyle

If you look at someone who has acne, watch them for 2 minutes, guaranteed they will start touching their skin. This only further spreads the problem by irritating the skin

Keep up good hygiene but not too the point where its weird, just wash everyday and have fresh stuff more often then not.

Some different remedies.

Betonite clay mask

Has been used for hundreds of years to remove impurities from the skin, words like a charm, I know.

For minimising the appearance of pores and getting rid of sebaceous filaments (the things on your nose people often confuse with blackheads, and which never go away for good) the Queen Helene mask up there is actually a good solution. Other methods include oil cleansing (removing dirt and grime by massaging oil into your face, but don't use just any oil as it can make matters worse), BHAs and so on. Personally I've found that the QH mask works best, but you may have a different experience with it.

But yeah, you can't actually shrink them (unfortunately!).

>>9940328
It doesn't contain any chemical exfoliants so it must be a gommage - basically a fancy way to say 'gel that pills easily'. In other words, you rub the skin after applying, which removes the dead skin cells, and the gel pills up and helps gather them up inside the little balls, if that makes sense. Another product that does this is The Face Shop's papaya exfoliating gel, and that one might be cheaper in case you want to try something new when you run out.

>Does your moisturiser contain vitamin E (it should)?

No it shouldn't. Vitamin E supplemented orally can increase vitamin E levels in skin cells, but topical applications of vitamin E doesn't improve skin health or look and doesn't protect against oxidative damage. Applying vitamin E to skin can cause redness, and applying it to broken skill slows healing. (http://examine.com/supplements/Vitamin+E#summary15-0))

Recommended (and proven) options for skin quality are polypodium leucotomos (7.5mg/kg bodyweight) and vitamin A.

Remember these are supplements, and are recommended in addition to good diet, water, sleep and exercise.

>> No.9942855

>>9942833
it can only cause redness in some people with particular allergies or sensitivities (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22828256)) and if used along with niacinimide. What you say about broken skin is true but we must remember that this is not your skin's normal condition.

Here's more about beneficial properties of vitamin E:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1524-4725.2005.31724/abstract

http://www.paulaschoice.com/cosmetic-ingredient-dictionary/definition/vitamin-e

In conclusion, it's a bad idea to use vita E with *scars*, but it's not useless in general.

Seriously. If you want to get rid of your acne, get yourself an rx for that stuff. BPO also works for some people but it bleaches the shit out of your non-white shirts and sheets unless you're careful to the point of obsessive compulsion.

Moisturizers and exfoliating gels can be worth it but my experience has been that they'll do very little to someone suffering from chronic acne - they're more something you use to make ok-ish skin look good, not something you use to make shit-tier skin look ok.

>Shaving bumps
TendSkin Solution did it for me. Used to have really bad razorburn for years but thanks to that stuff, it's (almost) completely gone (I /very/ occasionally get a single matte-red spot on my neck but even then it's pretty much negligible). Safety razors help too though aren't strictly necessary in my experience (I can't use 'em myself for medical reasons - even a small cut can get p. nasty for me).

DO NOT listen to this guy! Exfoliating the shit our of your face WILL NOT cure your acne, the only thing it will do is severely sensitise and redden your face. Bar cetaphil is much worse for your face than the liquid cleanser, because it requires a lather which is always inconsistant and is not water-based. A bar soap is only good for your body; your face is way too sensitive on its own.
You need to begin and religiously follow a skincare regime which begins and ends with a cold splash of water. Use a mild cleanser (I recommend DERMALOGICA's sébium cleanser [~$37 for 500ml on eBay]) followed immediately by an all-in-one moisturiser which caters for your skin type (oily, dry, combination - find out which)(I recommend Cetaphil's DermaControl Moisturizer SPF 30 - which controls both oily and dry skin as well as catering for sensitive and acne-affected skin, in addition it contains sunscreen above an SPF value of 15 which is VITAL for better looking skin).
If needed - and in your case, probably wanted - see a dermatologist (duh) and have them prescribe a daily product like EryAcne which is ethanol-based and goes under your moisturiser and helps acne control over the day.
Also, be sure to drink 2 litres of water a day. Take a photo of your face before you begin drinking this much water daily and then another photo two weeks later - I promise you that you'll look like a completely different person.
Finally, at night time you should be doing the above and including also a topical cream which contains benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin (presciption based, most likely [I recommend DUAC])

It's been mentioned a couple times in this thread that Salicylic Acid at 1%-2% can help control acne and acne scars. It works by unclogging pores and breaking down the oils around/in the pores. It will also shed layers of skin and promote the growth of new cells.

Your daily regiment should be:
-Morning: Face wash -> Sunscreen
-Night: Face Wash -> Salicylic Acid (1%-2%) -> Moisturizer.

Using an electric shaver is usually very drying to the skin and also can cause inflammatory responses due to micro-blades constantly passing over the skin at many times a second. They almost 'chop' the skin at fine angles and can cause small cuts in the skin which can lead to razer bumps (ingrown hair follicles). In my experience, patients which I treat for razer bumps typically benefit from switching to a more traditional style of shaving which allows for a closer shave (or not so close if you only shave with the grain - and only one pass over) and also a fewer amount of passes with any sort of blade overall. Be sure to use plenty of moisturising shaving foam and, if possible, a shaving oil base (I recommend Old Taylor of Bond Street Aromatherapy/Sandalwood [depending on whether your skin is sensitive or not, respectively]).

Imho this isn't necessarily a good thing.

Drinking so much water will flush out electrolytes in your blood, one being salt. Salt is responsible for water retention in your body/face

Flushing salt out will indirectly take water away from your face. It could help remove junk food shit that cause acne yeah but it'll also cause dryness, withered look. This was the case with me anyway

IV fluids show this theory. Ideal fluids for your skin with the balance of water and salt that the body best reacts to. Stay in a hospital and check how clear, full, bright and balanced your face looks. I use an IV when on a hang over/coming off a buzz and my face also looks amazing after

Two cents anyway pic semi related

Beginning with a cold splash of water 'wakes up' the skin - especially in the morning. Once you begin the process of cleansing; however, you should be using lukewarm/warm water as you said. Finishing with the splash of water closes your pores so as to prevent any dust/dirt/grime from entering them over the course of the day/night; however, it will not stop moisturisers from penetrating the skin.

The only reason one might think that electrolytes are flushed from the system (urination) is because you are undertaking this more frequently. In fact, the urine which is excreted is more so diluted compared to regular urine (which explains the typical loss of colour) and, as such, contains the same amount of electrolytes as the typical urine - just in a different concentration.
The people I am attempting to cater to would not be athletes - they are more typical people (specifically, teenagers) and would almost certainly be consuming junk food on a regular basis - which, combined with an increased level of hormones...you know the rest.

I saw this randomly browsing but I use to have moderate-severe acne and now I keep it at bay. I also went through Accutane myself in highschool but the acne lingered into college at a much lesser severity.

DCL Oily Skin Solution 8 (Even if you don't have oily skin) to exfoliate and slush off dead skin. I do this morning and night.

Epiduo Benzoyl Peroxide (VERY DRYING) primarily for spot treatment, a very light film works. I do this only at night after exfoliating.

After some hours pass, I'll put on DCL Labs Profoundly Effective A (Works kind of like Retin-A) and this works wonders on my complexion and how even my tone is.

Lastly, right after the lotion, I use Kiehl's Midnight Concentrate. This is the cherry on top and just like Profoundly Effective A, will give you a nice smooth feel to your skin and it won't feel rough. I use to have rough, dry skin.

I hope this helps, I barely post on /fa/ but just happened to see your post and know you feels. Good luck; you probably shouldn't use this shit though if you're going on Accutane. Just be prepared for Accutane; you'll dry up so bad and you'll want to crawl into a cave until it's over.

Stop using a physical scrub. Cut that shit out right now. If you're exfoliating do only a few times a week, and doing that twice a day is beyond terrible for your skin. If you need to exfoliate look into a chemical exfoliant, or at least use a peeling gel or a konjac sponge for physical exfoliant. You really should also be applying sunscreen on a daily basis.

As I have said, I cater to a general teenage audience and use terms which are easily understandable. Just like early-year Bio students will be told that Auxins (A type of plant hormone) 'move' from one side of a stem depending on light presence where in actual fact, auxins disperse unevenly which inhibits grows of the tip on one side, they do not physically move from one side of the stem to the other.
Pores do not necessarily open and close, the skin itself is stretched or more relaxed depending on a number of environmental factors. The overall elasticity of the skin contributes to how large pores appear to the human eye. So, while I did say that using cold water to end the cleansing phase 'closes' pores, in actual fact, it is the skin itself which tightens or loosens.

If you're going to go on accutane, do understand that a consistent skincare regime is vital for the best possible results. I have already explained a general skincare routine for acne-suffers above (the post begins with 'DO NOT' - hence my next point)

>>9952812
This may have worked to cure this guys acne, but your skin will be different. While exfoliation is definitely a necessary step in general skincare, it is not to be undertaken more than once or twice a week. Scrubbing the bejesus out of your skin is unhealthy and can lead to some serious skincare problems like craters which are usually unable to fixed except by laser treatment.
I guarantee that is this person has continued to do this for some time, his skin is still bad.

>> No.9953430

dont forget to take into consideration what general stress and emotional stress can do to your skin
i remember once i got out of high school my skin problems were just about almost gone
now im a rising junior in uni and my skin is almost as bad as my senior year of hs cause of constant emotional distress revolving around certain situations
honestly i hardly care about scars anymore, youll never see me with a whitehead in public because i pop every pimple i get. even though technically the acne is bad, it looks much better cause i pop it and still regurly wash my face and shit.
however i have moderate bacne and chest acne since uni started and i never had that problem in hs or middle school

at this point im ready to go to the doctor to get some prescriptions, whatever i can. acne is literally just about the only thing about my physical appearence that bothers me. life would be so much better without it.

Most of what this guy has said is true. Use an exfoliant once or twice a week and sunscreen every single day.
I would seriously recommend that when you do exfoliate, do it at night time. Doing a quick Google search, the scrub you use appears to be just fine; it uses natural oils and shea butter, which are all great for sensitive or normal skin.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a physical exfoliant containing micro-bead or such. However, if you have more sensitive than normal skin I would certainly recommend the use of a chemical exfoliant containg AHAs and/or BHAs which exfoliate without the use of physical items.

Onto the order in which you conduct your skincare. Ideally, you should cleanse your skin to begin with before moving onto exfoliating (only once or twice a week) and then finishing with your moisturiser. The 'Face Wash' that you use should be pH-balanced and aim to atone for your specific skin type (oily, dry or combination - find out)(my recommendation for oily/combination skin is listed in a previous post of mine). Your razor needs be something which is catered to the face; do not use disposable razors on the face - they are designed for one-use on the skin (underarms, chest, arms and legs, typically) but are far too abrasive for the face. You need to use a moisturising shaving gel or foam (I would recommend a generic brand like Nivea's Original Moisturising Shaving Foam or, if you have more sensitive skin, Tend Skin's Shaving Gel) combined with a razor which is best suited to you (Straight razors are best for sensitive skin and require fewer pass overs to achieve the closest shave).
Finally, if you do the above skincare regime for around 1-2 months and find that your skin is no different, switch to a different topical cream for your face as well as a spot-treatment for any unsightly blemishes. I recommend the use of a cream or gel which contains Benzoyl Peroxide and Clindamycin which are effective at the overall reduction...

(cont.)... of acne. For spot treatment, you may need to see a dermatologist who can prescribe spot treatments of high concentration to readily remove upcoming spots. For now, you can make use of a product containing Tea Tree Oil (which is a natural disinfectant) or simply 100% Tea Tree Oil (Essential Oils), applying nightly using a Q-tip prior to your topical cream.

according the ingredients list for the facial scrub he mentioned the first two are pumice and coconut shell. Those two are incredibly abrasive and will damage your skin in the long run, not to mention make you more prone to acne. Microbeads are gentle enough to be used as exfoliant but it's honestly a dickish thing to buy because that shit's awful for the environment and is getting banned in a bunch of states anyways. I definitely do agree with exfoliating at night time however.

These are not blackheads. These are sebaceous filaments. If I'm not mistaken, everyone has them to some degree. Your face naturally produces an oily substance called sebum. Don't chug, your GI tract won't be able to process it all at once, you'll pee it out

Have a timer that alerts you ever 10 minutes throughout your waking hours, when the timer goes off, sip about a tablespoon of water, like if you're sipping a bit of too hot soup

For the love of god DO NOT USE A PORE STRIP. It's fucking terrible for you and often leads to broken capillaries and leads to your pores getting even bigger. In terms of chemical exfoliants you should use a BHA (often salicylic acid, even though it's not technically a BHA), rather than an AHA. Don't pick at them. I find that using blotting papers throughout the day on the parts where you get really oily helps slow down their regrowth.

>>9960849
Use in this order: cleansing, exfoliating, salicylic acid, vitamin C serum, moisturizer, tretinoin. If you're using salicylic acid all over your face as chemical exfoliator as well as an additional exfoliation step you should really reduce the frequency per week of both as to avoid overexfoliating.

It depends on the kind of skincare product. The spread of review scores depends on the product type, since it's easier to fuck up certain formulations than others. Moisturizers are "safer" than, say, cleansers. I just needed a relevant pic though, the primary and most important things are the sources provided.

Yep. Better than most things.

>Body Shop Vitamin C Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 contains Amazonian camu camu berry, which is known to have one of the highest contents of vitamin C in nature.

K. The ascorbic acid concentration in them is at 2-3%, and then much lower in the final product. Too low to be cost-effective. They have included an ascorbic acid salt as well, though, but its absorption is lower than ordinary standard ascorbic acid. There's better stuff, both when it comes to sunscreens as well as products with ascorbic acid/vitamin C. Aim for something around 20% concentration if you give a damn.

It depends on the kind of skincare product. The spread of review scores depends on the product type, since it's easier to fuck up certain formulations than others. Moisturizers are "safer" than, say, cleansers. I just needed a relevant pic though, the primary and most important things are the sources provided.

>>9959940

Sunscreen suggestions here:

Cetyl alcohol is a perfectly fine ingredient and, like most other fatty alcohols, helps the product penetrate into the skin. SLS is also fine unless you're somehow allergic to it. The new age vegan mums have made it into a bogeyman but in reality it's harmless.

Alcohols are necessary in skincare. Even ethanol (alcohol, alcohol denat etc), used as a solvent is harmless unless it's on top of the ingredient list (and even then, some widely recommended sunscreens have it as their second ingredient) or you have dry or dehydrated skin.

Stop spreading false information and needlessly limiting people's choices just because Paula Jewgoun spewed some shit again to help sell her 'alcohol-free' products (that still contain fatty alcohols).

Despite what leddit says, you can get away with not wearing sunscreen depending on where you live and how long you spend outside. Not everyone lives in Australia or the US, and not everyone frolics about in the scorching sun while naked.
Not that sunscreen isn't beneficial or that you shouldn't wear any (you should), but it's silly to assume that everyone depends on it or will get skin cancer if they don't wear it 24/7. If aging is your primary concern perhaps, otherwise it's not as dire as that and I wish you'd stop scaremongering.
>>9963027
Mate, I wouldn't worry too much. It's a trial and error process, you'll likely need to change your routine sometime in the future. We can't help you without knowing what agrees with your skin and what skin type you have. I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for this but just because CeraVe and Cetaphil are often recommended, that doesn't mean you NEED those for a beginner routine. If I were you I'd just go to the nearest chemist (pharmacy) and ask them to recommend something or pick something gentle yourself. Be careful not to get 'recommended' something expensive, though. Even a respectable supermarket would do.

Your shopping list seems fine, but if you're a beginner I wouldn't get a chemical exfoliant just yet, at least not without sunscreen. Start small and build up.

There's your problem, and anecdotal evidence is not real evidence.
If we're gonna go down that rabbit hole, I use a facial cleanser with SLS and a moisturiser with parabens out the wazoo. Skin is fine, and as with every product it also matters how high on the list it is.

Sounds wise, the reason why is that in Denmark there is only one big chain of beauty stores (or what it's called) and it doesn't always have decent stuff. I have tried talking to the people at the local pharmacy and they just wanted me to buy the most expensive stuff, last time I was there they sold me a 50+ 30ml bottle of sunscreen that was greasy as fuck.

The reason that I want a full routine is that I'm currently on accutine and it's a nightmare and instead I want to try normal skincare instead.

>>9963564

>>9963556
Hmm. Well accutane does change things a bit, I'd suggest getting a rich moisturiser as accutane can dry your skin out. And you should DEFINITELY skip the Alpha Hydrox in this case, and wear sunscreen.

As far as sunscreens go, unfortunately there are many that are incredibly greasy and many more that are greasy and leave a white cast or irritate your eyes. I doubt that the pharmacist was actively trying to sell you the greasiest tub of lard they could find, they just don't have much of a choice.

Here are some I've had luck with
>Eucerin Sun Fluid Mattifying SPF50 (lovely finish but be careful around the eyes)
>Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence Water Gel SPF50 PA++++ (high in alcohol, might sting your eyes)
>Mentholatum Sun Play SPF50 PA+++
I've heard good stuff about Bioderma and RoC sunscreens but haven't tried any myself.

I'm curious, do you have ACO products in Denmark? Their face cream for dry skin might be just what you need, and they're a pharmacy brand. It's in a pink tube though, so if that turns you off...

>> No.9963687

>>9963626
That's the thing, I want to stop the accutine since it's has huge downsides and try with a good skincare routine instead. Honestly I don't think they had any clue, the guy I spoke to couldn't even recommend me a sunscreen so he had another employee help him, which gave me some expensive crap. Not asking for advice there again.

I want to find a moisturiser with spf so I don't have to put on 2 layers of creme and get greasy.

Nope, our only chain store doesn't sell it and I doubt any of our supermarkets do, I'll check the pharmacy though.

You can browse through the site yourself, I don't know what your skin's like now nor do I know what's available in Denmark (would love to visit one day though), so you can pick what you think would suit you best.
I suggest running each one's ingredients through cosDNA (http://www.cosdna.com/eng/ingredients.php)) just to get the gist of what's in it, but don't be spooked by the red numbers or anything. It's more of a guide rather than a set of rules. I use a moisturiser that scores 5 in acne for 2 ingredients but the ingredients themselves are just fine (green lines). Cheers!
