Generally speaking, wax is meant to applied to damp hair.

Put wax into your palm and rub your hands together until the wax is warm, and then put it in.

It's hard to say from this pic but your sides do seem too short compared to the top so maybe keep 2 thirds of the length and get it thinned if it's too heavy. Try styling more to the back and see if you like it.

If your forhead isn't too big, I say get your sides cut and keep length on the top. Have your barber "taper" bith sides and "blend" the side the hair is going to fall on. Don't remove any length from the top though.

My hair right now is incredibly long on the top and the back still has length. My hair falls in a 'V' on the back of my head and I have a natural hairline. Try tie in a loose top knot. I have a high hairline as well and if I tie it up that way it adds volume to the front and looks better than a low manbun. If your hair is long enough try see how you look parting bangs in the middle and tucking behind ears. It looks like shit on me but good on some people with bigger foreheads. Your side part is kind of tragic, try brush it back and to the side instead.

Thanks for the advice guys, I went to a new place to get my hair cut and they actually knew what they were doing, I explained that my hair was going to be gone soon so she cut it down without taking too much from the top and now suggests I use wax to keep it styled. I'll probably go back sometime soon and get the sides cut shorter. But incidentally can anyone recommend some good wax?
