Hey guys I'm pretty new to fragrances and was wondering if you guys could help me recommend some things for me.

I would describe myself as pretty masculine in how I like to look and carry myself.

I tried on some La Nuit de L'homme, it smelled really, really pleasant after the initial drying period, but I wasn't sure if it was "me" I asked my date and she said the same thing, it smelled good but she wasn't sure if it was "me."

So what would you guys recommend? I've heard some good things about Bleu De channel so I might grab a bottle, it smelled pretty good when I tried it on.

Also, do you guys usually get the smaller bottle or pay the extra $20 or something to get the larger bottle that's twice as large?

CdG has a ton of scents out there, and more than a few unisex ones. Please be more specific.

And La Nuit is clearly masculine. Just because it's sweet doesn't automatically push it towards the female side of the spectrum; consider the other notes.

La Nuit is a good scent (don't let the memeposters tell you otherwise), but if it doesn't fit with your look/style then don't get it. It's also primarily a night scent, meant to be worn in the evenings, whereas I'd imgine Bleu is a more all around scent. Look around more and try some different ones, and eventually you'll find one that suits your needs.

That's a tricky question. It's hard to give recs based on a person.

I'd recommend trying the EdP of Bleu by the way.

Really, your best option is to just sample a bunch of scents you like. Look at parfumo and fragrantica, browse notes you think suit you (wood, citrus, etc) and then order smaples from decantshop or something.

As far as paying the extra 20 bucks, that's on you. I've made a 30 mL of Burberry brit last for fucking ever, so eh. If you are gonna wear multiple scents, you can usually save 20 bucks and just get the smaller bottle. If you wanna make it your main every day fragrance and you feel like you are gonna wear it again in another time, 100 mL might be better.

>are you supposed to spray cologne on your clothes?
you can, but i never do. part of what makes fragrances interesting is how it interacts with your body. then again, since it takes so long to fade (some scents will literally last weeks on clothing), it could be cool to have those short-lived notes last more and mix with how the perfume normally progresses

>how much is too much?
when it becomes a distraction or overbearing. imo a good way to tell is if you can regularly and easily smell it on you 30 min. to an hour without trying (occasional wafts are okay). usually stick with 3-4 sprays, 5 if the fragrance is weaker and you really want to project

from what distance should people be able to smell you?
depends on the situation. generally, 1-2 ft. standing still; normal conversation distance. don't underestimate a nice sillage at social functions tho

>where do you apply cologne, just wrists and neck?
upper chest is best imo, then wrist(s) which i dab together then dab on my neck. and someone else here said never to rub, always dab, since rubbing will make the top notes fade quicker. if it's a weak fragrance, maybe an extra spray somewhere. i usually do the middle of the torso or the belly, to diminish the chance of overapplying

Your nearest Sephora or major department store (above Macy's-tier, e.g. Nordstrom, Barney's) and just try out scents. Chanel, Hermes, Bvlgari, Lalique, and some say YSL, frags are good designers to start with and those last three won't hurt your wallet too badly. These places carry niche scents, too, which is nice as buying samples of them online can get pricey.

Oh, and remember that designer scents are typically cheaper and more accessible than niche scents, but one is not inherently better than the other.

Rough draft of top compliment getters I made recently from collecting for the past 5 years..Obviously compliments are random, and certainly I have a lot of fragrances that I like that sometimes I just end up not wearing as much as others for one reason or another but here I go..

Fragrances that the community tends to say are top tier but are just ok, or awful compliment wise.
Millisime imperial, tobacco vanille, tuscan leather, new harleem, DHI, SDV, A*men ...All of these tend to do only ok compliment wise in my experience. Besides A*men which does absolutely awful. Ive only met 2 people in all my years in fragrances that have ever thought it smelled good. Ive also got a number of bad reactions on SDV as well.

Fragrances the community tends to hate that get good compliments
Gucci guilty, gucci guilty black, versace eros, im tempted to put the new CK reveal in their since all their fragrances get bashed, but havnt worn it enough times to say for sure

Fragrances that people tend to like after the fact. Strange category. But I find these fragrances in particular I hear girls tell me they like often, but when I wear them not a lot of unsolicited compliments out right. More so after the fact, like.. Oh you smelled really good yesterday. Or just in general when girls thinking of fragrances they like, they will mention it. Maybe because they are so common?
Le male, One million, aqua di gio

Fragrances that do in my experience have a high ratio of unsolicited compliments yadda yadda~
Boss bottled, light blue, curve or curve crush, guess seductive, la nuit de l'homme, the one, pure malt, aventus, straight to heaven, allure sport and extreme, ch men, cool water(more compliments on cool water than GIT I would actually say lol.. dont care for either though but anyway)

Anyway yea just off the top of my head. Obviously theres a lot of other fragrances I like and some more than the ones ive listed but I just havnt worn them enough to really say.

thoughts on some samples i got. keep in mind that these are mostly first impressions as i've only worn each once for a day and that each was applied with the dabbing stick or by hand as they came from a vial and i don't have any atomizers

L'Artisan Coeur de vetiver sacre
+main notes are vetiver and dates, with strong incense backing that warms the fragrance and amplifies, especially the dates and vetiver
-a little too sweet at first
-dries down to something that smells a bit like dill (though dill isn't listed as a note; also, who wants to smell like dill?)
-reminiscent of a simplified Vetiver 46 (Le Labo), and not in a good way
-4/10

The Different Company Un Parfum de charmes et feuilles
+nicely herbal and fresh
+main notes are mint, sage, thyme and marjoram; tiniest hint of vetiver sweetened with jasmine supporting the whole thing
-linear
-terrible sillage, projection, and longeavity
-6/10: because I really like the scent itself despite the awful performance

L'Artisan Fou d'Absinthe
-yes, it's a typical "old man smell" fougere
-very piney and somtimes reminiscent of Irish fucking Spring soap
-would be much better if a little sweeter to cut that and make it a little feminine...
+...which it does as it dries, after an hour/hour and a half it's a much better scent. really starts to shine once the star anise becomes more noticeable
+an all-weather, day/night scent
+probably the best performer of this batch of samples
-5/10: to be fair i'm not a fan of fougeres, but fwiw this is probably the best one i've tried

>> No.9938327

>>9938322
The Different Company Sel de Vetiver
+the lightest vetiver scent i've come across; definitely a warm weather scent
+vetiver prominent throughout as you would expect, the salt as well but to a lesser extent. in the beginning, they are paired with a sweet spicy citrus (cardamom and grapefruit) with slowly recedes with a slightly powdery iris exerting itself a little more
+no major cons to speak of: any weakness would be regarding its lightness, but i was satisfied
-9/10

Diptyque L'Ombre dans l'eau
+one of the most straight-up beautiful fragrances i've tried; subtle, ethereal, mysterious
+also one of the most natural smelling
+rose is a note I usually dislike. here, it's understated, not loud, in the background mostly and goes well with the green notes and slight fruitiness; as a whole, it's more rose bush than just rose.
-not a problem for me, but might be a little too feminine for guys who gravitate to darker and/or more assertive, conventionally masculine fragrances
-9/10

Etat Libre d'Orange Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes
+perfect beach scent
+lime, coconut, and ginger are wonderful in the opening
-dries down into a powdery, slightly musky sweet lime scent (the lime eventually goes, but the sweetness stays); it's pleasant enough but not my thing
-don't really get much of the other notes listed
-relatively short-lived, ~4 hours which is decent imo for this type of scent
-7/10

>> No.9938343

>>9938327
Oh, and I should mention that I tried the EdT version of L'Ombre dan l'eau, which I read is more greener and less rosy than the EdP version (hence my attraction to it over the EdP)

Other than that, reviews generally state that projection, sillage, and longeavity is more or less the same between the two versions.

This is similar to Libre but better in every way. It starts off green, but dries down to this nice light citrus. It is quite refreshing. Longetivity is pretty good compared to most YSL fragrances. Check it out.

>Hanae Mori Pour Homme (EdT)
I EXPECTED a lot more citrus and vanilla. What I got instead was a sweet vanilla fragrance. Longetivity is pretty good. Maybe I need to try the EdP. Regardless, a nice scent although better suited to cooler weather imo.

>Dior Eau Sauvage
One of my friends told me it smelled like cheap old spice.
I think it is a nice fragrance, but I can't say I disagree. It certainly is refreshing, but on my skin, I don't really think it was special. I didn't find the longetivity to be that well either.

>Dior Eau Sauvage extreme
oh baby this is so much better. I shilled for it in the last thread. This has so much more character than the origianal eau sauvage. It has a nice citrus that stays throughout, but the rest of it changes pretty well. It starts off almost spicy, but dries down to a nice green + citrus combination. If you like Eau Sauvage, give this a shot. Great

>Dior Eau Sauvage parfum
It is basalmic. Probably an evening fragrance. I don't have a lot to say on it because I didn't care for it. Not necessarily bad, might appreciate it more in the right weather.

>Channel Allure
As I've said before, Chanel has become one of my favorite non-niche houses. This one is perfect for autumn and winter, and even spring to an extent. It is a nice mix of vanilla with light citrus. In fact, I'd say it is an improved YSL L'Home, with better longetivity and more interesting. I know everyone loves blanche, but don't overlook this one because they are most certainly different.
I also kinda figured that this is what HM Pour Homme would smell like, except one other on the list

>Channel Allure Homme Edition Blanche
a lot of people claim this is vanilla-y, but I didn't get anything of the sort. I got a little spice and kick to it with citrus.
What can I say about this scent though? it's fucking great. Decent longetivity, nice projection, and it is one of those scents you can really smell is evolving on your skin. Highly recommend giving this one a shot.

>Dior Homme Eau
okay this is DEFINITELY what I imagined HM Pour Homme to smell like. It is basically like lemon cake in a bottle. It is sometimes pleasant, and sometime "eh" Longetivity is again alright for the price, but it was almost to sour-sweet for my tastes.

>Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme
one of my new favorites for light citrus scents. It is almost exactly like D&G Light blue, just less creamy and more aquatic. Longetivity is fine, worth checking out as an unoffensive citrus scent.

>Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche
ugh. the only TdH scents I've liked is their EdC's but those are obviously cologne and don't last for shit. This one fixes the problems I have with the original in that it is a lot less heavier, but it just smells so unfresh even with oranges. I'm still not a fan of it. Doesn't mean I think your taste is shit if you DO like it. Just my opinion mane.

>Rocky Mountain Wood
I just wanted to remind you all that this scent lasts for fucking ever and is cheap and soothing.

i can't fucking find a frangrance that works with my body chemistry

la nuit smells really incense-y, i've smelled it on other people and it's fucking great but it smells god-awful on me. guess seduction smells like refrigerant on my skin. guerlain smells bad on me. nautica voyage, lacoste, paco rabanne, terre d'hermes, all the meme frags don't smells good on my skin. the only one that does is l'eau d'issey but i'm allergic to something in that one, coincidentally

it's the wood i think.

>Bleu De Chanel
I've posted on this before, but I'm never quite sure. A few weeks ago, I was sold on the EdPbut then I tried the EdC again and I'm like "oh this is much lovelier" Basically, try both.
Honestly, I really like both and it just seems like it depends on my mood. I'm still debating on whether or not the EdP is alright for daily wear.

So, my favorites so far are the following: D&G Pour Homme (I fucking love this shit, it isn't popular and I got a compliment first day I wore the bottle I bought), ANY chanel, Rocky Mountain Wood, YSL L'Homme intense, Live Jazz, and HM pour Homme.
Shoutout to Burberry Brit Summer because it is a nice flanker and even if it doesn't last too long it is lovely.

Hope this helps, AMA. Or give me more recs and I might do another batch of samples because I am really enjoying doing all of this.

YSL L'Homme is a pretty safe, inoffensive, and versatile (and a little bland imo) choice that isn't too expensive.

Occasionally TJ Maxx/Marshall's will have decent shit. My local ones usually have Bvlgari Aqva scents is stock which are generally decent (avoid Bvlgari Black as that is not summery)

Or you could cop online. There are tons of recs itt and the previous one (linked in OP) and lists of reputable places to buy.

Currently rotating between Aventus, MDCI Invasion Barbare and L'Artisan Parfumeur Fou d'Absinthe.

I'm looking for a tobacco based fragrance (sweet toabacco, cherry tobacco) that smells masculine. Possibly with woody, boozy and/or smoky notes. Caramel or fruity notes might be interesting, too. It doesn't have to be a powerhouse but I'm expecting decent longevity. To be honest, if I could find something that smells similar to the way Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille does for the first hour, I'd be more than happy. I wish TV was more linear; after an hour or so, the tobacco gets completely overwhelmed by the vanilla.

I just bought a bottle of Fahrenheit and nearly everyone I know seems to either dislike or hate it. No fucks given; it's the only scent apart from Hanae Mori HM that has passed my "filter list" completely (i like the smell - it is unique - it fits my style - it fits my personality). I think it's much more important for a certain fragrance to suit its wearer than to be a compliment getter.

I've asked for recommendations in the previous thread and managed to get some samples. Here are my opinions on them:

> Voyage d'Hermes EDP
I've read an interview with Jean Claude Hellena where he talked about attempting to create a "tense" sort of scent with Voyage. I think the word "tension" really describes the feeling created by Voyage d'Hermes. Very unique, doesn't smell similar to anything I've tried before. It smells green and peppery despite not having any pepper note listed. Despite the positive reviews it's very much a hit-or-miss-thing, don't blind buy it - I personally find it unwearable.

>Bvlgari Black
I don't get the rubber note everyone keeps talking about, what I mainly smell is a mix of tea and very strong vanilla. It's a bit feminine but otherwise quite pleasant scent, dark and sweet. My first reaction was "eww" but the more I smelled it, the more I began to like it. It personally suits me very well, I might just add this to my previously mentioned list of favorite fragrances and get a full bottle, the current sample will last me a long time though (5 ml size).

>Lalique Encre Noire & Encre Noire Sport
Smoky vetiver and smoky-citrusy vetiver. The latter is kind of similar to Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver. It's also a bit more versatile and wearable than the original. EN is very dry, dark and has a certain "mysterious" quality to it. Both of these can be good as an introduction to vetiver-based scents but neither of them are blind buys, definitely test a sample before pulling the trigger.

tl;dr the one you're looking at is probably real, they might work for a department store or something. They've sold cheap scents in the past (Chanel no 5) and not had any complaints, probably means that it's real, otherwise people would complain that it smells like literal cat piss

I keep asking on Fragrantica and no one there seems to get what I'm talking about

I'm looking for stuff along the lines of CB I Hate Perfume or Demeter but not

I'm into the anti-perfume kind of stuff,
I don't really want to smell like I'm wearing perfume but I still want to wear a scent, if that makes sense.

Previously I've tried stuff like CB's Black March, Wild Hunt, Grass, loved those,
would kind of like something along those lines but maybe some sweet fruity notes
my main problem with CB has been the price vs the longevity

So I'm looking for anything similar from other houses,
low to moderate sillage, moderate longevity, "accords"

Is Le Labo worth checking out or am I looking in the wrong place there?

The thing is, I ordered a sample and the minimal scent it has literally disappears after like 10 minutes whether I apply it on a paper strip or skin. Told her it might be the cologne I'm wearing so I let her take a sniff off my wrist. She was amazed, literally said she'd have sex with this scent if she could. It was Versace pour Homme.

Fragrances just don't project on my skin for some reason, I always have to ask grills or friends to smell my neck or wrist if I want to get advice or opinion because otherwise noone will notice. It could be the same for you, too.

I think what that Anon is referring to is that some fragrances seem more chemical than others, something that feels like originated in a lab as opposed to it possibly existing out there in nature somewhere

Most "natural" scents in many perfumes are synthetic since some essential oils and other natural ingredients are expensive as fuck (or have been banned, e.g. civet), so chemicals replicating those scents are being used. Niche perfumers tend to still use the real things, which is part of the reason they are usually more expensive than designer fragrances (not that it makes niche scents automatically better, mind you, and niche houses still use synthetics frequently).

Smell something from Diptyque and compare it to something from Chanel or especially Dior, and you'll get it.

The general consensus is wear whatever you like.

I've heard some women say that feminine-smelling fragrances can be really sexy on otherwise very manly guys but if you're overly metro or just plain girly/boyish it will make you appear gay.

Still, since some of the best selling frags of our generation are already extremely feminine (1 million for example) I think you're safe to wear that one.
