I actually study at mcgill, and conversational french is more than enough. you'll speak english almost your entire first year, unless youre one of the few people that actually go and explore real montreal.

secound year and beyond, you can live in the student ghetto and never need french, but personally i enjoy improving/practicing my french in real qc french parts of town. if you live somewhere outside the ghetto after first year, it's definitly a bonus to speak french. some french people resent having to give you service in english and once in a while youll get shitty service on account of it, but if you try in french they'll usually be nice even if you suck and they switch to english.

but, as the other anon pointed out, almost everybody speaks english in montreal. or, at least anybody youll encounter at a restaurant, clothing store etc


also if you go to mcgill, stay a summer in montreal.
