Sure, it might be a little tough to stray out of your comfort zone if you've worn Nike or Adidas your whole life, but I guarantee you it's worth it.

You might be right, but truthfully, you won't find many nice shoes in the arbitrary $100ish price range.

If a company produces shoes that are well-designed and well-made, and they sell well, then they'll obviously raise the price. A popular example on /fa/ is Common Projects - they originally started out at $250ish and now they retail for just under $500. Same thing with APC and Acne jeans - they used to be affordable 20 years or so ago when they started out, but they are able to raise their prices because of the demand.

I like things because they look nice, not because they're expensive. Unfortunately, the two often correlate.
