skincare problems

so I went on adapalene 0.1% for a month, and it made my skin itch/peel and purge. After I finished my 15g tube, I stopped, and used antibiotics (100mg minocycline oral and 4% erythromycin gel), which cleared up any remaining lesions.

however, I still have some white comedos, especially on my cheek area.

I also use 20% azelaic acid cream to try to even out skin tone (also a very mild glycolic acid peel once a week). I doubt I'll be able to continue the peel if I start adapelene again.

so my question to skincare experts here, are there any other products that will clear up my comedos? I hardly have any active lesions remaining, and hopefully one more year of consistent adapalene/antibiotic use will clear up my skin. I also have hyperpigmentation/red spots, but hopefully I can clear them away with azelaic and glycolic acid.

re. your question in the other thread: I'm not a derm.

the retinoid/antibiotic cycling should do the trick. azelaic acid has been shown to be effective for mild-moderate acne, with less irritation, but has a slower onset of action compared to retinoids.

you're using several different kinds of treatment right now and no one is better at deciding what's good for you than your dermatologist who knows your medical history and how you've responded to treatment. see another dermatologist if you're not happy with your current treatment.

but if I were you I would try all kinds of crazy things, like primarily topical phytosphingosine, and then possibly topical linoleic acid/ethyl linoleate, as well as topical (!) probiotics.

something that might be more available to you is some old-fashioned Stridex, benzoyl peroxide, and the "oil-cleansing method". but I think the best thing is to get a second opinion from another derm. try to avoid Accutane if you can.

hope it turns out alright.

btw, hyperpigmentation =/= red spots

hyperpigmentation, as in excessive pigmentation, creates brown spots on the skin. if you have red spots where you used to have acne, then it's most likely a matter of "post-inflammatory erythema". I brought that up in the other thread.

Thanks, I have hyperpigmentation. Didn't realize there was a difference.

I don't have a dermatologist right now. I'm actually going to med school in fall, and an attending physician told me to try to look my best (ie clear up my bad complexion), since appearance influenced clinical grading in MS3 A LOT :/

I've been self-medicating with antibiotics and adapalene from an online pharmacy, and my acne is responding much better than the regimen my old derm gave me (benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid).

I still spot treat with BP 5%.

I'll try the mild glycolic acid peel and azelaic acid for hyperpigmentation, and wear lots of sublock (Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Moisturizer).

Hopefully my skin will look better after my 1st year.
