How usual is it for people to mod watches? Is that done only to the watches that are somehow more succeptible (seiko 5 is infamous for that, right?) or can any watch have its dial or hands just swapped?

>> No.9699553

>>9699528
Any watch that's not a seiko 7s derivative, miyota 8215, or ETA is going to be a lot more difficult to find hands for. You're going to actually have to measure the diameter of each pinion and go through a watchmaker supply site and find ones that match exactly.
Dials are a lot easier, though. If a dial doesn't actually match the movement you can just snap off the dial feet and affix it to the movement with adhesive dots.

Most people are too retarded to know the difference between a high-quality fake and the real thing.
The reason people want to buy fakes is to get a good, functional watch that looks the way they want but without having to over spend on the real thing. Very, very few people would call out your watch if it's really good, especially if they only see it for a short period of time.

But I don't know if I could handle having one watch, and one watch at a measly $3k.

What do /fa/?

SARB035 or vintage king quartz/grand quartz $350-$500

Seagull 1963 or that Helgray chrono or one of those other seagull ST19 watches, or a Seiko 6139 or 6138 $220-600ish?
Some servicing if you fuck up buying a vintage watch and it ends up needing work work $100-500

The thing that really set me off is a thread I read where a guy posted a picture of a blue seamaster with a red strap. He asked how he could replicate that kind of look for cheaper. Somebody with sense would realize that he was just asking where he could find an affordable blue watch and a red leather strap to go with it.
Not watchuseek, though. They saw the word 'replicate' and the entire thread immediately turned into a FAKE WATCHES ARE FOR FAKE PEOPLE FAKE WATCHES ARE FOR FAKE PEOPLE FAKE WATCHES ARE FOR FAKE PEOPLE shitfest and nobody ever actually answered his question.
So I left watchuseek and started the daily watch threads on /g/. I made an affordable watch infographic which over time got enough people to buy watches that there's now a thriving watch community on /g/ and we can all circlejerk over our slavshit and malaysian seikos in peace. Happily ever after.

To tell if it's quartz (which it most certainly is), put it up to your ear. If it ticks once a second you have quartz.

This is because that doesn't look like it has a seconds hand.

Quartz is good for those who just want a simple watch that doesn't need to be fiddled with apart from a battery change every few years.

I think it looks quite nice anon. I just don't like the CK branding.

Date is made confusing in the pursuit of 'design'. Still you'd get used to it.

24 hr dial doesn't need 02, 06, 10, 14, 18 or 22.

Hands that are the same colour as the face are generally harder to read at a glance.

Looks like it would wear quite large.

It says "MULTIFUNCTION"

How much?

Not bad if you like wearing it.

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. I'm going by the width of the strap compared to the width of the watch dial.

I'm guessing 42mm.

I like the notches in the bezel. That's a nice touch that brings out the textures/levels in the dial.

Honestly, I wouldn't know, I'm not familiar with the watch you're asking. Also, my Imperial Red is the especial edition of only seven, with various parts of the movement made out of hand-engraved yellow gold so its cost is way higher than that.
The quality of the watch is really good, the dial in particular, wich doesn't have the tiniest flaw. The watch feels solid and heavy enough, the crown robust, the hands brightely polished, etc... The only thing not in the same level is the strap, wich I will change eventually.
To resume, watch is great.

Dark brown smooth leather master race. Unfortunately I don't have any photos where you can see the whole strap. I bought this one from Hirsch and I think it was called the Ascot or something like that, if you want to get the exact same one and be matching strap bros.

I really think dark brown is the best fit, I've seen photos of Constellations with black leater and it looks odd to me. You could also look into an alligator pattern if you're into that, but it'll cost more if you get real alligator or some other exotic leather.

maybe, if you really like the design. Their stuff seem to be good for their fairly low price - sapphire crystal, size not too large or too thick, 10 bar WR.

On a side note, considering the amount of people ask for advice in choosing their new watch every day there should be a guide pastebin in the OP post about what criteria to look for - size/crystal/wr/movement.

Also ignore /g/, ultimately the design and style depend on individual preferences. Personally I find his taste in divers disgusting.

Surprisingly for a namefag that spams his shit all day in here and /g/ he's just as big a vocal idiot as sieg and I don't doubt he samefags sometimes too.

This is my dads old watch. He meant alot to me, and I also like the watch, so I was wondring if I had any options for this thing. Its a Jovial Sapphire Crystal Swiss watch, and it has a couple of problems.

1. Needs a new battery

2. Entire face shifts when I move the crown or whatever its called

4. Looks like the 9 marker on the face of the watch is messed up?

Nothing is better than anything in general, it all depends on what you're using it for.
Metal is the only thing that really works for anything, but it's only good if it's a solid-linked bracelet because cheap bracelets are dildos.
Leather is the best (and only, if we're going by strict dress conventions) for dress watches.
NATOs are easily washable and they're long which makes them great for situations where you're sweating a lot or wearing it over field clothes.
Rubber is good for divers and not much else.

It is indeed an hour striker. The most obvious difference (besides hearing it) is the absence of a trigger. All minute repeaters (afaik) needs a bit more energy to bang the gongs contundently enough to make it hearable; this extra energy come from coiling the trigger when it's activated. 100m water resistance on the SNZF is pretty weak for a diver, especially when the SKX007 isn't that much more and it's a 200m legit diving watch. The Mako looks very nice and supposedly the bracelet is better than the comparable Seiko bracelets, but the watch itself has a shittier bezel and lume. It's pretty much up to personal preference, but keep in mind that you can replace a bracelet, but if the watch itself is cheap then you're stuck with it.

The Seiko 7S26 movements are all pretty much the same, the only difference is whether the assembly line robots are in Japan or Malaysia and whether the people overseeing the robots are Malaysian child slaves or Japanese factory workers. It really doesn't make a difference.

>Glad to see that you didn't get whacked for sending a mafioso to jail or something.
Lol. Not yet m8, not yet. Although I recently managed to get a full confession of one of the torturers on the urugayan case. I have recieved a couple of anonymous threats though. That's why I decided to spent easter far away, in Mexico, where they can't find me. I'm back, however. Glad to be back and to hear from you too.

>Doesn't know lawyerfag has a watch collection worth the GDP of some of the shittier third world nations.
Well, don't know about that, but thanks m8.

Besides the increase in water resistance spec, does upgrading to the SKX007 grant any other quality improvements?

Lume brighter than the sun, a little less text and shit cluttering up the dial, I prefer the styling of the 007 (has more in common with the vintage Seiko divers like the 6105), you get to own a meme watch. I haven't seen the SNZF in person so I'm not sure how the fit and finish compare, the 007 is bretty gud in that respect for the price but then again so are the Seiko 5s I've seen. Both have Hardlex crystals, but I'm pretty sure there's different grades of Hardlex because my SNK807 has gotten some very minor scratches in it while my 007 seems pretty damn hard so far and I haven't scratched it yet.

I do like this but I dunno if it will scratch that Speedmaster itch.

I seem to have so many different watch itches at the moment that need sorting. I need to spend less time in these threads

I think a simple chrono with the tachy on the bezel would do it

I have a Mako and am sure a few othe people on this board do. The build quality seems great so far but like anon said the lume leaves something to be desired. I don't plan on going diving anytime soon so it's not a huge issue for me and it's bright enough usually for me to tell the time if I'm in a bar or club.

Not a fan of the SNZF though but the SKX007 is a sexy.

A used omega speedmaster isnt that expensive, consider saving to purchase one. I work a shit tier job with shit tier pay and only work like 20 hours a week and could afford one if I wish. Throw $20 a week into the speedmaster fund for a year

Seiko is great value for money meme is outdated. It started way back when seiko had sappire crystals, mechanical made in house in japan movements and spring drive watches that were just a few notches below grand seiko.

Nowadays seiko includes some really tacky gimmicky models....hardlex mineral crystal scam, made in malaysia not in house movements. Arcrylic exhibition case just to have it

And some really flimsy stock bracelets everything is hollow end linked now

I would go as far as to say orient is the new seiko same parent company but in house japaense movements nice cases servicible bracelets all under $250.

Sk007, riki and seiko 5 might as well be invicta, fossil/micheal kors or nixon tbh

Nothing reedemable or miraculous about it. Just another cheap watch with questionable build

Might last 2-5 years and look half decent with a nicer bracelet or band but disposable junk products

Thats my current plan. I thought saving £100 a month.

I still feel a little guilty about spending that much on a watch when also saving for a house.

I kinda think fuck it I'm a guy I'm sure plenty of girls I know have a grands worth of jewelry and handbags shitting up the place. People see a nice watch as a waste though

My orient mako is of questionable quality, decent for the money but not great by any means, the bezel is shit, and the bracelet is exceedingly average. You have to pay to get a decent watch

I don't want to come off as bragging, but I have heaps of money, I could buy a Rolex or ap if I wanted too. But I'm not wealthy by any means, I work part time minimum wage and haven't recieved a cent off my parents my whole life. I think I might use my savings to invest in real estate once I get a reliable job and use the profits to buy some nice watches in 20 years time

Lawfag I'm the guy who asked whether your movement in the red Celadon was the same as in the Beijing BeiHai. Turns out it is.

I'm not trying to be a cunt here but what justified the price of your Celadon? Because you can get the same movement in extremely nice looking watches for about $500.

P.S. I hope it's called Celadon. I'm referring to that red beauty.

>You don't HAVE to match colours if your accesories, but if you can, go ahead; it makes you look more coherent in your fit.
A thousand times this. There's no rule that says you have to match your watch with the other leathers, just imagine having to switch watch/strap every time you use a different colour shoe/belt (and there are quite a lot of colours). But it does look better if you do manage to match the watch as well.

What would you consider worth purchasing in this price range? I'll eventually have the money to invest in a nicer timepiece, but right now I'm a student who has to look professional whilst being a poorfag.

Are there any vintage seikos I should have my eye on?

>listening to any of the inane bullshit sieg spews
Please don't
>calling a watch an investment
Stop using that word, it's stupid. There is a one in a gorillion chance that your watch will actually become desirable and appreciate in value. Just because currency inflation makes it look like some old watches sell for more now than they did new does not mean that they're actually worth any more money, especially since the owners have had to pay lots of money over time to service those watches. You're not an investor you're a goddamn consumer. You're throwing your money away in exchange for a nice shiny new watch and you are never going to get that money back. There's nothing wrong with that just call it what it is.

King Seikos are cool, King Quartz and other high end 70s quartz Seikos are excellent watches for very cheap, 6139/6138s are pretty awesome and they're pretty much the cheapest automatic chronometers out there.
