I have a 2008 335i coupe and I fucking love it. 300hp, twin turbo engine, rides super nice, leather interior, very comfortable, okay on gas. I got it because it had what I was looking for in my price range. I know people think I got it to look rich, but that's not why. I actually used to not like luxury cars for that very reason. That being said, if you're buying a 1 series for looks, maybe people who don't know shit about cars or shit about BMW's will be impressed, but other people will know it's a cheap low end series of bimmers. And frankly, they're goofy looking. You're paying for a smooth driving toyota, with a nice interior, that you can tell people is a BMW and that will need more work and cost more to repair. Your choice. But I'd say get a 3 series. You can probably find older models for as low as 10k and it's an all around much better car. Even if you go with a 328, still much nicer looking, much quicker, and you won't look like you cheaped out and got entry level series.

You can improve handling on turns with slight camber adjustment and lowering the car. I don't mean like SLAMMED AND STANCED, but slight lowering, better suspension and wheels can change a bit.

I drive an E30. It was plastidipped this shitty black/white camo pattern and underneath was this blue color. I'm not a fan and will be prepping it for paint early spring. It has a bunch of cosmetic issues I need to work on, but so far it's a fun little ride.

if you're poor just get a corolla. i have a 2003 corolla sport with 170k miles. they are very cheap to run. good on gas. never had a single major problem as long as you do routine maintenance on them.

older cars can sometimes be very expensive to fix and more things go wrong on them more often than with newer cars, especially if they're uncommon or foreign cars.

I spent $4,000 on my E30. On average you can find a cleanish one for between $3~5000. Mine had a lot of performance upgrades to it (turbo kit, megasquirt, running on e85) and I'm pushing around 460bhp right now. The car is easily worth double what I paid, but it had some minor mechanical issues that deterred other buyers so it went for cheap.

I wouldn't recommend the e30 unless you were mechanically inclined and didn't mind doing maintenance work yourself. Since the car is older parts will need to be replaced, and many auto shops won't be willing to touch your car due to the age. If you're comfortable doing head swaps, or timing belt/water pump changes then good on you. I own 3 cars so if I have to work on one of them I'm not out a car.

If I were you then I would honestly just buy a used late 90's or early 00's honda civic due to fuel economy, ease of repair, and parts availability. It won't be /fa/, but realistically you can't afford /fa/ car as a grad student unless you're willing to do a lot of work yourself.
