9360113 No.9360113 [Reply] [Original]

Hello /fa/. I'm from /biz/.

/fa/ and /biz/ are my two main boards, but let me cut to the chase.

Last week on /biz/ I posted an idea to make a lot of money for a little money by throwing local parties. It's worked tremendously, but since /biz/ are antisocial fatties sitting behind computers in their basements, they don't understand how I'm doing it. Here's what I want to do:

I want to bring in the local /fa/ types. I want to cater my parties to a very particular type. Yours.

What sort of parties do you go to? How do you dress? How do you hear about your parties (Online, Flyers, local areas, etc.)

Any input will be appreciated. Thank you, /fa/.

>> No.9360132

>>9360113
90% of /fa/ are teenage autists that don't know how to talk to girls and don't know how to socialize well with their peers. these are not the kind of people you want at your parties.

Luckily I am in the other 10%. I usually hear about parties via facebook invites or word of mouth. I'm not going to go to a party just because I see a random flyer or advertisement for it. I go to all kinds of parties, usually house parties that get crowded and a little rowdy, the kind where I feel sincerely bad for whoever is gonna have to clean up that mess in the morning. I dress casually at parties, but I do sometimes make an effort to wear my more /fa/ clothes. A few steps up from what I wear when just going to the grocery store or running errands.

>>9360113
i dont go to parties anymore but when i did they were usually associated with the local underground music, art, or drug scenes, and the overlaps thereof. punks, metalheads, pill poppers, painters, print makers, etc. now that i think of it it was pretty dirty. sorry op cant help if you were thinking of trying to get anyone wealthy and clean

>> No.9360151

>>9360113
welcome to /fa/, the board culture here is a shitstorm so get ready. most cool fashionable people are busy liking what they like and don't visit /fa/ because they don't need an imageboard to tell them what to wear

i would think word of mouth and posters would be your best bet. all of the cool parties/monetized house shows that i went to this year i heard about through word of mouth. come up with a cool name and format (the biggest one i went to was a once-a-month art show/dance party combo) and after one big hit party it will be a self-sustaining machine

as far as how to get the word out there, it would help to have a 'cool' group of friends as the host, and then they can invite their friends and it can spread from there. its all about networking with the cool kids

just my thoughts

No, wealthy and clean are not necessarily the aesthetic I was looking for, every bit helps. Last party I threw was very much a drug-punk scene. It made me 670 bucks, and made lots of connects, so thanks.

>>9360132
You're the 10% I'm looking for, then.

So facebook and word of mouth mainly, then? I've found a lot of success on twitter and facebook. Maybe I'll hire someone with a big mouth. Look for someone who doesn't care about their house being rented out too. Thanks for the input.

>>9360151
Yeah, I've got that 'cool kid' circle working downtown with a word of mouth thing, but no cool nickname yet. Any suggestions on a cactchy name for them? I've thrown two so far that made $1090. Many people asking when the next one is, so I need some sort of moniker people recognize.

Many DJs play for free to get rep

A group of my friends are actually doing this same thing. They throw "renegade parties" which is basically a facebook event where the location is sent only by personal message on the day of the event. Typically the locations are in some woods right outside of the city (Vancouver) and they have DJs set up a generator and speakers. They don't charge to show up, only for drinks. People are nice enough to appreciate them throwing these events enough to donate, or to buy their drinks from them instead of bringing their own beer. These parties attract a lot of local artists and creative types. There is a nudist that frequents them.

>Last week on /biz/ I posted an idea to make a lot of money for a little money by throwing local parties
go into detail; how do you make money?
I'd like to try this.

To answer your questions:
>What sort of parties do you go to?
i don't anymore.
>How do you dress?
what every the dresscode or "vibe" is. some people really like events where you have to get dressed up. but putting "dress code" on the flyer usually means the event is shitty or pretentious.
I wear a party jacket and heels; denim if I want to be more casual; slacks if I'm trying to dress up some. I pretty much never wear dresses.
>How do you hear about your parties (Online, Flyers, local areas, etc.)
generally word of mouth, like through facebook or something. make an event and tell people to invite their friends, etc etc etc
sometimes, posting flyers on college bulletin boards can spread the word well.
but I've never gone to some random event because I saw a flyer, you have to have some decent third party backing. if there are a series of events or something I know about, then I may check out something I alone hear about, but generally, I stick with things that have some sort of secondary approval.

Oh yeah, I've never heard them called Squat raves, in the US but I know what you're talking about, sure.

I don't have enough to make tremendous profit on those yet, but I'm working my way to it. To do those legally you've got to have dosh and jump through a few hoops of red-tape in NYC, so I'll have to work my way up to it.

>>9360301
It's a great way to make money and have fun doing it. I'm good on rent for 3 months and can still throw 3 more if I want to spend all of it. I suggest more people do this.

I should add that if any of you /fa/ guys and gals are in the NYC area and want to make extra money for help, let me know.

This is a copy of what I posted on /biz to the same question:

It wasn't hard, I paid a local bar 100 to let me throw it there. I live in lower Manhattan.

I gave 50 to the bartender for the night. Bar made money, I collected for each person that entered. It was easy.

I hadn't considered house parties on the simple fact of taking a hit with the liquor, but I'll be able to do it and make a profit soon.

I promoted using twitter and Facebook, as well as some flyers at the local bars and in my area. Word of mouth doesn't hurt too. Charged just 10 dollars at the door.

I got lucky with rowdy people. I have one friend that's 6'3'' at the door checking IDs and he's enough to get people to think he's security. I just drink with him at the door most of the night.

I brought in the sound system from a neighbor who let me borrow it the first bar. The second bar had a sound system with an AUX port in the back, so that wasn't necessary.

I don't really have any advice that hasn't already been said but I'll tell you this.

My older brother does this, he hosts "events" but it's exactly what you are doing but I think with a little more people involved.

He uses Facebook to spread word and him and his mates go to local malls and sell "advance tickets" to people. They wear t shirts with the party details and their moniker as well to spread word at the same time.

I'm pretty sure he charges 10 or 15 bucks a head at the door, or if you buy an "advance ticket" although there is literally no benefit in buying a ticket before hand.

I guess making it seem reputable is the biggest thing so they don't look like a bunch of young dickheads out to steal ya hard earned money.

So they always register the party with the local police station in the venue, let the know about projected numbers, what security is going to be like, if any at all, names and phone numbers of staff, just in good faith with the cops.

Well their first party they had about 1500 people attending, cops said sweet, next thing you know the number is closer to 2000. The cops said ok but they will provide some officers and a dog to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

About a week before the night my brother gets a call from the police saying it's too many people and the risk is too high. Cancel it.

Nothing he could do, he PMd everyone who had clicked going on the fb event page. Made a statement on the fb page saying why it's called off and even got the police fb to post on the vent page so people know it's legit.

He gave people 2 weeks to collect their refunds if they had already bought a ticket. He posted times he'd be at the mall where people could come up show their ticket and he'd give them the money.

He also posted that people who don't collect their refund will have their 10 bucks donated to the local kids hospital.

I think they ended up donating a little bit over a grand to the kids hospital. They got a photo woth some kids and hospital staff handing over the cheque and the hospital thanked their event service for the generous donation on their fb page.

So now they are known as the party/event organisers who donate to kids hospitals.

It's all about rep mate.

They've been pretty successful ever since.

So there you go, hope you can take something useful away from that.

When I party I usually find out about it through word of mouth and friends. Get some liquor and turn the fuck up. I prefer house parties cause those are the most fun. Raves can be alright too but from what I've experienced the grittier the place the party is hosted the more fun it is. I usually wear casual clothing shit that I won't care about if some some chick spills or whatever else happens that night ruins the clothes.

Just be careful where you host the place OP, cause property damage with a bunch of drunk or high people is a very real threat, and you don't want to be forking over your whole paycheck for the night because somebody got into a fight or some shit.

If you're trying to host parties with /fa/ people, having connections is key, especially in nyc. The awesome parties in New York are loft parties hosted by people who already have lots of model/musician/artist friends. I guess you can start small like you're doing, but fashionable people probably won't want to hang out at a divey local bar unless you have a good draw.

I've been lucky with some of the connections I've made during the last couple of things, so I'm looking forward to using them this next time. I'm getting mostly the right types, but I'm carefully crafting how I throw these next few to see if I can control what type of people show up. We'll see.

Well thanks, I'll keep that in mind. If everyone is cool with it, I'll post when they're going down in a short thread.

Thanks for everyones input, all of it has been seriously helpful. 4AM here though, and now I must sleep. I'll be around tomorrow for suggestions or ideas if the thread is still up.

in HS me and a friend hosted a few raves.

We made about $250-$350 a night charging an entry free, and we even got booked a birthday gig that paid $400 because of it.

DJing can be so fucking easy if you have the right equipment.

Add a good music taste, basic understanding of marketing and how to make a good party atmosphere and chicks, you got a stew going

Take money where you can get it. If you can figure out something that works for you then do that. It isn't rocket science. Take a little bit of extra money and turn into more. Are you against that idea?

An embarrassing, bumbling fool. Your words speak for themselves. Cool trip.
