When do old shirts (clothes) need to be retired? I have a few shirts I've had for a long time that have holes in them, but they're just too comfortable to throw away. I only use them if I'm staying at home or sometimes when I work out. However I feel like there's a stigma about wearing clothing with holes and rips, even when I'm just working out in them.

Thoughts? Pic related but not mine.

really up to you. if they have perma-stink then toss them. Otherwise you can wear it despite some stigma. If you are worried then just toss them when they start looking raggedy.

I wouldn't wear t-shirts with holes in them. You could keep them for when you're doing something messy like painting I guess. Or use them as rags for cleaning etc. You don't necessarily have to throw them away.

I also have some jeans that sort of look like this, except with more of a "oh shit that actually happened" naturally torn look from when I spilled battery acid on my jeans, rather than an on-purpose cutting for looks.

Not sure if they're worth keeping since I haven't work them in a long time.

the nice designer shirts that i have that get holes or tears in them

well i normally sell them on ebay or grailed or sufu

put "like new" under condition heading. "only worn 3-4 times"

don't mention the holes. take real pictures that don't reveal how the item is damaged/worn

i practically wear all my clothes for free doing this

If you work out at the gym, why not just buy some cheap gym wear? The fabric is more breathable and isn't as sweaty and gross.

For stuff to wear at home, you can buy Gildan blanks for like $2 that are fine for sleeping in.

I guess I just have a hard time throwing things away. It's a hording issue. I have tons of clothes I don't for not much more reason than that I don't want to. I don't want to throw these away because I've worn them so much and like them.

OK, I'm going to throw away just junk tees and wear my other ones. Yep.

it was a robert geller short sleeve shirt. the dye was stained orange in the both armpits because of my deoderant and there was a tear in the neck line on the left side

dude ended up bidding $98 on a shirt that cost me $90 on sale a year earlier lol

Wearing old shit to the work out is way cooler than wearing new shit. People who always have to be completely put together are lame as fuck. Ratty old shit is way better than shiny sportswear.

What makes you think people "deliberate over" new clothing?

Why are you implying that any clothing that isn't ratty and old is new? There is an in-between, and I'm sure that's where most people's clothing falls under.

It seems like you're just trying to make yourself feel superior to others.

>> No.9358979

I just think buying gym clothes is dumb as fuck and embarrassing. Embarrassing because your scrawny ass isn't an olympian. You aren't a big guy and you aren't skilled at sports so why are you playing dress up? Watch Doin' it in the Park. All you need is a good pair of shoes.

>> No.9359122

I sort of agree here. I've always felt more comfortable working out in ratty clothes rather than exercise designed clothing. I usually wear some old teeshirt as a top and swim trunks, old shorts, or old pants rolled up as bottoms.

>> No.9359141

>>9358979
What if you are a big guy? Again, please stop assuming things to make yourself feel superior. You're weakening your argument.

They're clothes designed for the gym; we're not talking about wearing some weird avante-garde runway clothes here. What's wrong with wanting to wear clothes that are functional and will better your quality of life in some small way?

If you don't like to wear gym clothes, that's completely fine, but you don't have to find reasons to insult people who don't share the same opinion as you.

They make great pillowcases. I change mine often so every now and then I have to use a shirt in rotation.

They don't actually help you at all at the gym or at sports. They're like camo for hunters, just a bad fashion statement. Plus I actually like the way ratty old clothes look like. I still wear my high school PE shirt to the gym and I'm 22.

I enjoy arguing so I'm going to shit talk. It's fun to pit your wit against others and you are far less articulate than I. If you are an actual athlete you are paid to wear sportswear by your sponsors.

They aren't as sweaty and gross
They're more breathable
They can sometimes be lighter/more flexible

These are all objective advantages to gym wear. They are facts.

Again, if you don't care about them, that's fine. Just remember that there is a market for them for a reason, and that reason is not primarily to show off new clothes at the gym.

>If you are an actual athlete you are paid to wear sportswear by your sponsors.

I have a good reason but you have to follow me on it.

There's a story in America that's not only popular but also inspirational to a lot of people. Poorer people in America (more than you'd think) that want to make high achievements depend on a 'rags to riches' lifestyle of only having ratted clothes to work with. Weather or not that case fits each person, many people feel following that idea will help the spirit in ways new, shiny (bleck!), functional clothing would.

Sure, but the American dream is BS just to get workers to keep working min wage jobs in the hopes of a car and white picket fence and being able to pay off your mortgage and all that.

Intragenerational mobility in the United States is among the lowest in the developed world.

In layman's terms, if you're American, you're going to stay in the same socioeconomic class you were born in unless you're an exception. And statistically, you're not.

I'm not saying you shouldn't. Of course we should aspire to make the most of our lives. My original argument to >>9359203 was simply that "rags to riches" is for the most part, a fairy tale, and wearing t-shirts with holes won't do much to change that. But if wearing old clothes keeps you motivated, I don't see why you should stop wearing them then.
