Goodwill is expensive.. I always try to go to St Vincents, or no-name thrift shops. Found some old hawain[sp] shirts from the 60s. My dad told me they are worth a lot if they are the real deal. Bought em for 2 bucks a piece. I have 10 of them.

I've gotten some nice, wearable clothes. My favorite finds, thus far, came from the electronics section:

>a Yamaha DX-100 synthesizer, the de-facto bass sound of early house music, picked up for $10, labeled as "untested/speakers missing"
>a Roland TR 707 drum machine, less popular than its 808 and 909 counterparts, but still capable, labeled for $3 as "untested", found underneath an old VHS player
>an Ensoniq Mirage rackmount synthesizer, which makes beautiful analog sounds and the BEST strings/pads, labeled for $2 as "untested", found next to an old computer monitor

I found ALL of these things on the same day, at the same store. I was very lucky to have found these things. These instruments needed some internal battery replacements, and general cleaning, but they all were functional. I basically got myself a simple Detroit house setup for $15.

The goodwill in my town is cheap as all get out, but if you cross the pond and go to the goodwill in Tacoma, the prices get steeper.

Thrift stores are a reflection of their neighbourhood and the way people dress within it. The only exceptions to this are when upper middle class people give away their nice clothing to a shitty thrift store as a "Good deed". But beyond that, their modern function is closet shuffler for the neighbourhood. If you want to find nice older clothing, shop near old folks homes and areas heavy on the elderly. If you want to find middle class garb, shop in the suburbs. If you want something youthful, look towards thrift stores near universities.

If you're in a smaller city, there are usually one or two large scale operations that everyone goes too like Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Value Village. Smaller thrift stores sometimes have rare treasures, but more often that not they're just struggling. The final thing to remember is you're now competing with two groups of people. Those who sell used clothing on ebay and the clothing sorters at the Thrift Store who get first pick. You can't do anything about the latter, but you can compete against the former by showing up early and knowing sales day/merchandise restock days.

Just luck I guess! I've seen some people who I presume buy stuff to sell in vintage stores, and what they do is go through the racks quickly and comb through every item. If it 1) feels expensive (like rigid denim vs. soft denim, or real wool vs. acrylic) or 2) looks good (stands out from the ordinary or looks like a brand/designer you recognize) then they stop to examine it. And they go through both the men's and women's aisles. Also even if you're just thrifting for yourself like I do, the staff might accidentally put men's clothing in the women's area so you might as well go check. I really don't go thrifting that much, but the best advice I can give you is to just go often and to different spots, and know when they restock etc.

Also don't underestimate Craigslist/Kijiji, I lowball certain clothes (take a guess) on there and relist them for 1-2 hundred profit.. It's slow but it's an okay side job or a good way to get used brand name stuff :)

>> No.9349868

I got some nice vintage Helmut pants for ten bucks. Also scored some early APC trousers before they got shitty and some Kapital denim. Two of my favorite sweaters are thrifted.

I find plenty of cool non-fashion things at thrift stores, but I'm pretty picky about clothing cops. As someone else mentioned, consignment stores have better stock, but there's a pleasant magic in finding a good piece at someplace like Goodwill.

>> No.9349881

One of the trips here found some Ann D ombre lows for like ten bucks at Goodwill. I can't remember who it was. The sole on one was a little fucked up, but a cobbler fixed it.

I've seen some designer labels like Raf and Jil pop up at Goodwill, but it's generally ugly shit or size xxl or something.

copped Lacoste+Malandrino dress NWT at Texas Thrift store. In same trip also found Bisou Bisou skirt, Calvin Klein Blazer, Marc Jacobs adorable striped pumps. In previous visits I had also seen some other big names, but sometimes they put ridiculous prices on everything. Lately, I've been thrifting a lot of Ann Taylor Loft for some decent basics.

I mostly buy jackets and sweaters when I go because the t-shirts always seem gross. I live in a small town in Missouri so a lot of the stuff I find isn't designer and is just cheesy shit from the 90's. I'll probably post some pics of stuff I've bought tomorrow but for now here's a jacket I got yesterday for like 4 dollars.

I posted this in the Fuccboi general but this can go here too.

I got this yesterday at Salvation Army for 10 bucks. I've been looking for a longline coat so this was a dream as soon as I saw. It fits really nice however its an awkward length because of my 5ft 3' stature (im a woman) it ends right in the middle of my kneecaps, thus making me look shorter/stockier. Would it be worth getting the hem tailored up two inches? The lining seems detatched from the bottom (will post another pictures) so it wouldn't cost too much.. Right?

I also dont know how to wash it because there aren't any washing instructions on it, so I'll have to dry clean it.

She says if you go where there's old rich people who die (especially in the Cotswolds) you get better things, but if you try the more fashionable places it's picked through and more expensive.
I've still not found much decent following her advice though.

vintage hype is real atm in netherland, everything expensive and without tags sometime ( like the ones at negenstraatjes, they put their own tags on it and most of it is yust old 90's style clothing )

my guess is going to events were they sell second hand clothing / thrifted clothing like vintage per kilo were you pay for every kilo.

but because in NL everything vintage that is still a bit good quality you can get pretty overprized shit, that are sometime onpar with yust regular clothing.
