I copped a whitebpair of these online during the summer, got a good deal on them, like £40 or something, but I sent them back pretty much immediately. They were horrible. They arent as slim as you'd expect and they stick out in all the wrong places. My bad for buying overhyped 15 year old kiddy shoes.

i got these in in white. not too bad for a pair of beaters, look nice, they are starting to look nicer with more wear, the coating is developing nice looking creases, nice patina.

wish i got the leather vault version but i didnt want to spend that much money on beaters for a little bit better aesthetic. i'd rather put the difference in the bank towards more luxury items

theres a couple different ways i wore them when i had mine. look great with sweats/joggers, any slim fit jeans you can roll up, or shorter tapered out chinos for kind of a 90s look like pic related (even though pic related is cons)

I own a pair of the black xtuffs and my girlfriend has the white ones. They are definitely just heavy canvas with a coating like you thought. Not to say that they aren't quality, the xtuff sk8 his are the most durable sneakers I own. They're also waterproof which is a huge plus when it's raining.
