I dig the kind of stuff Visvim are going for, and I have a hard-on for Red Wings, but I'm picky about workwear. I don't know that I like the typical Americana style, but I am in love with Nigel Cabourn's stuff, even though it's a bit more military leaning than workwear.

Shit like your pic is fucking PLAAAAAYED. Oh god when you see someone decked to the ears in shit they bought at a ridiculous markup from some online boutique it's just ridiculous. It's usually the most baby-faced weak looking guys too. And everything they bought is always fucking brand new so it's glaringly obvious that they just bought the entire fucking outfit with one swipe of mom's credit card.

Sure, incorporate some elements of that style but FFS if i see you on the street dressed like one of the fags from Mumford and Sons who just got back from an extended holiday with hobbits in the shire and takes an hour to cuff his straight-leg denim I'm going to take pictures and post it here.

>Lets waste our shirt lives feeling sorry for everyone else.
um, maybe instead of just feeling sorry for people who are not fortunate enough to just 'take it slow and smell the flowerssss*~~~' you could, like, devote time to making the world an actually better place. Not just a world where you sit around writing about the immensity of the discovery that the sun is in the right place for complex life to exist (hint: you didn't discover that, either, and probably don't actually understand its implications).

well i mean whatever do what you want

The thing is that clothing, especially americana and heritage workwear, carry idiomatic and historical meaning. They were made for function, not just to be looked at / used as adornment. When you wear this kind of clothing to walk around your university campus drinking coffee and studying calculus you're wearing the clothes ironically (intentionally or not).

Clothes are just like any other symbol, they have intensions (i.e. meanings associated with them that are beyond the control of the speaker/wearer.) For example, wearing a flag of a country on your clothes signifies some tie to that country. If you don't in fact have some satisfactory (this is the debatable part) connection with the country then you wearing the flag is meaningless, nonsensical. Stronger cases can be made with words, even to the point of being confusing or offensive.

Just like in any other art or endeavour, authenticity and coherence are important to the quality of the product. This includes your outfits, which are little works of art in their own modest way (if you want them to be, if you don't then that's cool, but I imagine you wouldn't be defending them to a substantial degree).

At the same time, it's cool to appropriate pieces or ideas from other types of clothing. Take Timberlands, Doc Martens, MA-1s, jeans, for example. But the thing (that the other user touched upon) is that this style / trend has basically appropriated the entire tradition without distinguishing itself significantly. It's the same clothes, chosen with great attention to detail for their 'authenticity', but used out of context and for no reason other than "cuz I like it!" Why are you wearing such rugged boots and jeans and jackets? Why do you have so many pockets? Leather satchels? Two notebooks? etc.

>> No.9194883

>>9194881

tl;dr if you wear functional shit for no reason other than "I like how it looks" then you're a poseur that is ruining the aesthetic that emerged from the need for such clothes to look like that.

>> No.9194891

What are you even talking about?

You could 'personally pursue to understand' what someone is talking about when they're fucking talking to you.

You're sure as hell not gonna discover, characterize and interpret the orbit of the earth around the sun writing in your leather notebook about how much you like being wealthy and happy.

>Do not expect me to give up my happiness to feel bad for you.
I didn't say or even imply that. I was saying you should feel bad that other people feel bad, and should want to help other people because you are more fortunate and have the means to. Your life isn't so bad and you can help other people. Writing in your little notebook isn't gonna help lower carbon emissions or feed hungry families.

You don't gotta be depressed about other people's misfortune, but you should be motivated by it.

>> No.9194906

>>9194891
Like I could care about the orbit of the earth. How do you not see that it doesn't matter what you tell me, it could be the will of God holding us all together. That doesn't impact my Life, I have no interest in it, just a product from it.

I dont take the world's turmoils on my shoulders. I'll acknowledge your bad feelings, Dont expect me to feel them. How am I going to be happy when I feel sad for you? The only things I should do, is eat, breath, sleep, defecate, and be happy.

imo its corny as shit when people go for the "classic" or "heritage" americana like in op pic decked out in red wings and levis but when you acknowledge that modernworkwear exists it can work

the thing that often kills workwear is that people go for old fashioned workwear

>ridiculous markup
goes on sale like anything else. "ridiculous markup" is no worse (in fact, a bit less bad) in the americana trend than in other fashion trends

>and takes an hour to cuff his straight-leg denim
this doesn't happen
cuffing takes five seconds; that makes it a lot easier and less fussy than some other pants trends which aren't criticized here, such as tucking into boots

>WTF kind of autistic shit do you write in a notebook all day?
Diary entries, poetry, ideas, word games, whatever (I mean poetry quite seriously because poetry is my passion; I don't just mean pretty little poems, I mean sketches and ideas for proper poetry to be written later). It's a good way to jot down things so you don't forget them, or to experiment with words when you have a few minutes. It's actually really helpful to carry around; don't knock it till you try it.

>>inb4 autist tries to justify notebook for "muh random thoughts and musings"

The point isn't that they're random; the point is that they are good, and worth holding onto. I don't just jot down "random" things that come to mind -- random thoughts arise all the time. A notebook is for when a thought strikes you not just as neat, but as good: fit for being written down and remembered.

>random leather satchels to hold acorns and herbs or some shit
or to hold things we actually need to bring with us?

and what's so awful about an interest in botany anyway

>ironic camera
as another poster noted, they're often not ironic

>Shit like your pic is fucking PLAAAAAYED.
This I can agree with

unadventurous #workwear fits are boring as fuck and I'm not defending them

>>9194765
this is baaaaaaaaaaad. I get that you want to encourage a state of mind which seems very important to you, and probably has helped you become a better person -- but the words you've chosen to that end don't work. It sounds like really stale "inspirational" talk.

>> No.9201820

>>9194765
I'll add some specific criticism

Cut the shit about the earth. Cut the shit about letting life pass you by. Cut the shit about "taking for granted". Cut the shit about slowing down and smelling the flowers.

These metaphors and cliches are all dead words on the page which will invite nobody to consider anything in a new light. There is a kind of hypocrisy in a poem that asks you to slow down and smell the flowers, but can't be assed to slow down and consider the world directly. Why breathe deeply of the flower which is a visionary moment, when you can instead pull out some available wisdom about "smelling the flowers"? The poem argues against itself -- asking the reader to stop to reflect, it proceeds routinely through dead metaphors without a moment's reflection.

For comparison, here is another poem about slowing down to enjoy a moment in life, by Robert Frost.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Look how alive that is. Look how fresh and powerful. In that little word "sweep" there is more compelling inspiration than in a hundred "inspirational" aphorisms, I think. For the reader, it is a sweep along the spine. Rather than telling you that you SHOULD appreciate such a moment, he shows you that you DO. There's more to the poem, of course, but that's not relevant here.

Rethink your approach to inspiration.

oops, I called what you wrote a "poem". That was a mistake I made after I had begun to compare your writing to poetry and forgot what I was actually talking about. Maybe you intended it as a poem, with those line breaks, but maybe not. Anyway, I didn't mean to call it one.

Other than that, I stand by what I wrote.

>"You didnt figure that out yourself, people figured that out already!"

somewhat missing the point. you've very clearly INHERITED the cliches. Dead metaphors don't spring up newly-formed in the minds of young people -- they're heard, committed to memory, and recited. That is what it means when someone says these are not your new ideas. The point is that you did NOT figure them out yourself, you heard them and repeated them.

They may seem freshly important to you at the time of repeating them, but that doesn't mean they are your ideas. In my opinion, the important point isn't whose they are -- the point is that they represent an absence of your ideas. You might have actually had more ideas if you hadn't been so unimaginative. It doesn't really matter whether you had an idea "first"; what matters is how often you exercised creative power in your lifetime. every time you reuse a cliche instead of trying to create your own vision, you deny yourself a wonderful opportunity.

the other poster seemed to imply you ought to read more books to know which ideas are taken. that's a very boring way to think. you should read books to see how other people before you have used their own creative faculties to great effect, and by doing so, to learn how to be imaginative in your life and in your work. and they furnish you with more things to think about or with.

of course, borrowing from the ideas of others can help make your vision stronger. and you should give credit to those who helped inform your take on life just as you'd like to be remembered by those who might someday borrow from you. but don't fall into the set of cliches life has prepared for you. do something a little more interesting. smell the roses -- and let the roses here be unusual ideas or obscure sources, and that will offset your perspective a bit, so that you can offer back to the world a slightly different story than the ones they've already heard.

My thoughts exactly, based satan. The whole point of workwear is that it's durable, practical clothing that can withstand the rigors of a jobsite. It's authentic by definition because the form follows the function. The anachronistic urban lumberjack bullshit in OP's post never gets worn to a jobsite, and guys that buy it should just stick to the metrosexual look because that's what is authentic to them.
