How long does hair need to be to slick back? My hair is straight and thick (asian) and it just falls straight forward naturally. Undercut / HY / shaved sides and back reporting

How do I keep my hair looking good and staying in place combed back without having to always use loads of foam and hairspray which make it rock hard, dirty and flat?

If I use some light gel and a small amount of hairspray (or just hairspray) after about 20 minutes it all starts falling down the sides and looking awful.
