Depends. It's different based on your genetics - the awkward stage lasted about a year (it wasn't really 'awkward' though, just not at my ideal length), but I just found a look that suited me until then and cut it that way. Take biotin, whether it speeds the process up or not, why doubt it? It won't harm you to buy into it, proven or otherwise. I still consider myself to be in an awkward stage, because it's not long enough to do more than a quick elastic bun, and that's why I'm growing it out.

I shampoo about three to four times a week, but the day after shampooing it half of the time looks good half looks bad. And now that it's winter hair is getting more fragile. I want to avoid any thinning.

I've been growing out dreadlocks since 2006. I've gotten a lot of compliments on them for the past few years. When people ask me what my secret is, I usually tell them three things.

1. Have thick hair. Sorry, but straight, fine hair doesn't usually turn out well for dreadlocks.
2. Get it done by a professional or at a salon. Don't just Google how to do your own dreads or get your friend to help you out with them. Get somebody who knows what the fuck they're doing already.
3. Consider braiding your hair first and locking dreads up underneath them. This is my personal secret, but it requires the patience to let your dreads start growing in rather than turning the hair you already have into dreads.

I've been growing my hair out for like 8 months or so now. I haven't got my layers cut, though, so I can't really wear it down yet.
