General scent thread. Discuss the deodorants you use, colognes, etc.

I know this image will trigger some people, but hear me out. Most girls I talk to say they like Old Spice. The other day on TV I saw a qt pi celebrity say she loves the smell of Old Spice on men. I don't know why, maybe it's a weird connection to their grandpa or dad using the scent. Anyways, I'd never get the spray because aerosol spray scents remind me of Axe. Are there colognes that smell similar to the original Old Spice scent?

Old spice has "classic" scented aftershave/cologne. It's really cheap and lasts forever. I wear it as an everyday scent when I'm feeling too lazy/poor to wear my nicer cologne. It's definitely not the most masculine scent but it smells nice.

If you're talking about Armani Attitude Extreme, that has a pretty unique note breakdown for an oriental spicy that will be difficult to find elsewere.

You could buy some armani code at an online retailer with a discount, but I'm not a big fan.

Encre Noir: Dark as fuck vetiver. Would go well with Dark Americana/gothninja/formal suits/techwear.

Rochas Man: Sweet coffeebased thing with vanilla. #menswear, normcore, going to the club type scent.

Azzaro pour Homme is a classic 70s lavender scent.

Le Male is a good versatile signature scent that pairs vanilla and lavender.

Guerlain Vetiver: Soapy clean vetiver. A classic.
Terre d' Hermes: Dirty oranges and vetiver. Works for all occasions.
Grey Vetiver: Modern vetiver. Safer. For wearing a suit.
Sycomore: Woody vetiver. Smooth and unisex.
Vetiver Extraordinaire: Spicy vetiver. Expensive and exclusive.

I'd say Memoir Man by Amouage would suit that aesthetic perfectly, but it's a niche perfume so expensive as all hell. I've only got a small decant myself. Dark incense and cool mint.

Bvlgari Black is fucking awesome. It's black latex and leather with a brisk burnt opening, then slowly sweet vanilla creeps up on you.

Cologne is a style of perfume (or fragrance if you're afraid of sounding girly) originating in Cologne, Germany. It's used to describe both perfumes where the concentration of essential oils/synthethic chemicals to water/alchol is about 2-5% (making it the weakest concentration) and perfumes with a simple blend of citrus and herbal notes.

If you're asking what brands of perfume are good, that is way too broad a question. If you're actually asking about cologne in particular then I am a fan of Mugler Cologne. It's cheap and perfect for summer.

It's a unisex scent in the "oriental woody" olfactory group. This generally means that they've blended some classic oriental notes such as amber, exotic resins and flowers, musk, vanilla and incense with either warm sandalwood notes, or dry cedar/vetiver notes.

In this case there's the main note of incense and the ylang-ylang that is pretty much solely responsible for the oriental vibe, while you've got all three types of woods backing it up, cedar probably being the main one according to teh interwebs. I've never really tried anything from LUSHs Gorilla Perfume line so I can't really go into detail. On paper it seems like a relatively balanced scent, but probably best suited for fall/winter.

I wish you luck with the interview. Oh, and since you like incense scents go check out Fahrenheit Absolute. It's being discontinued and it is my favorite designer incense frag. If you really want to fall down the rabbit hole you can order some samples from Comme des Garcons niche incense line of perfumes. They're all off-the-charts Oriental Woody perfumes.

I'm new to wearing colognes. I was looking for a woodsy, Earthy type of scent and was suggested He Wood / He Wood Rocky Mountain. I went with a cheap 1 Oz. bottle of HWRM. When I spray it initially, I clearly smell it. I typically spray on both sides of my neck (under my ears), then on my upper chest (close to my shirt collar). After an hour, I cannot smell it at all. I'm wondering if it's just nose fatigue, but I truly think it may be my own skin chemistry just not being able to absorb / project the scent. What should I do? Get another scent? I heard using something like Vasoline on your skin first will help hold the scent.

First off: HWRM is an Eau de toilette, not a cologne. Just call it a fragrance if using the word perfume bother you.

Sometimes certain fragrances just don't work for you. Nose fatigue should not set in quite so quickly. HWRM is known to have pretty good longevity so unless you bought it on ebay or something (making fakes a concern) you might just be very unlucky with your skin.

Putting on moisturizer/oil before spraying can help for some. Worth a shot. Also, ask someone else to smell you. Perhaps your nose is just weird that way?

As for a other woody and earthy fragrances with staying power:

Terre d'Hermes
Encre Noir
Grey Vetiver
Guerlain Vetiver

There's vetiver in all of these fragrances, but to me that note blends woody and earthy to perfection.

Hermes Concentree D'Orange Vert: Bitter oranges and greenery. Really subtle refreshing mint. Fresh as fuck.

Chanel Allure Homme Edition Blanche: Lemoncream pie. If you're the type to wear nice shirts, perhaps some boat shoes or a summer suit this is perfect for you. Really good sweet and authentic lemon flavor with subtle vanilla and tonka bean making this smooth as silk.

Anyone here know anything about women's fragrances? The women I know only wear Body Shop bodyspray but it smells too synthetic for me so their advice isn't useful. I'm rather new to fragrance but I do know what I dislike, namely: gourmands, vanilla, and anything too sweet or warm (as descriptive as that may be). I've been to Sephora to try out the rollerballs and wasn't lucky; too sweet, too much vanilla or it just smelled bad. The only thing I've liked from Sephora that I liked was a discontinued Unisex scent. The last things I tried that I DID like were from L'occitane: Piovine Flora (peony), and Rose er Reines (Rose, bergamot and raspberry). My impression was that they were slightly sweet, as well as 'cool and watery', and I do not mean that they were weak in fragrance, more that the fragrance was light in body as opposed to being very compact and heavy in scent. I didn't know what they were composed of originally and was surprised to find that I liked such floral fragrances, there was something about them that excited the tastebuds somehow.

I suppose the other thing worth mentioning is that I'm only 21, I have smelled some fragrances in the past that I liked but that I considered too 'perfumey' and 'sophisticated' for me to pull off.
What sort of fragrance notes should I consider looking at? Is there such a thing as one-note sampler packs to help familiarize myself with various scents?

Hey anon, I actually mentioned the same problem upthread and I know the feel. Perhaps try unisex or more niche scents, even a bit more masculine ones could be up your alley depending on what they're like.

You could try ordering some samples online, Luckyscent has a great selection of more niche scents (but the downside is that they are more expensive).

Can you describe the kind of scents you like here? Maybe you could also look up the ones you liked on Fragrantica since they have the "you may also like" suggestion box.

My tastes are a completely different deal (grassy, earthy and chypre) but out of the ones I tried Masque Milano's Russian Tea had raspberry notes. It's very heavy, smoky and thick though, I'm not sure if you're into that kind of thing.

As you can see, I've recommended unisex fragrances here and there in this thread. I do know quite a bit about the female side of things as well, although my taste leans heavily towards classic bold perfumes and weird niche ones.

If you like light, clear, watery fragrances that are nonetheless exciting I would recommend you look at everything ever made by Jean-Claude Ellena. He is a perfumer currently working for Hermes and is well known for his sheer, but deep and well-crafted fragrances. Go to a Hermes store and act interested and you should be able to walk out of there with plenty of samplers free of charge. The Jardin series in particular should interest you. Some of them blend floral with fresh and fruity vibes like in the other scents you describe.

As far as one-note samplers, yes they do exist, but I think you'll find it an expensive and boring exercise to collect them. Plenty of online sample retailers carry sample pack with different themes that might be more helpful.

It's a classic fragrance. It was revolutionary when it was launched thanks to its gasoline-like leather note at the top. I know that note can be slightly challenging for some, but I love weird stuff like that. Once that dies down it evolves into a very classic manly 80s style fragrance. Very... "math teacher/old man", but in a good way.

Niche fragrances will usually allow their perfumers a wider range of artistic expression as well as access to more rare and expensive ingredients. Because the price and higher and the market is smaller they don't have to aim for mass market appeal and easy mass production. Taste is subjective, so "quality" can be said to be pretty subjective too, but these attributes are what I personally find to be indicators of quality. *Niche fragrance companies/lines

>> No.8983441

Niche perfumes are usually produced by _very well known_ perfumers, who are given greater freedom than they usually get and who oftentimes feature more prominently in the marketing, as those who buy niche perfumes generally care about that sort of thing. Just go look at the Frederic Malle line.

terre d'hermes smells like an old man dude and nothing like oranges

>> No.8985942

>>8985633
It's pretty legit, but very busy, spicy and loud. The reformulated version currently in stock apparently lost some of it's depth (probably due to the outlawing of oakmoss and other ingredients), but I still find the opening a right punch in the face. I'd say winter only.

Of course. Gotta keep up with the meme hype train after all (well a couple of years ago anyway). It's honestly a bit sweet and berry like for my taste. Expected something more boozy. Women absolutely love it though, and it gives massive projection for 8+ hours easy.

Deo: Nivea Men Sensitive
The smell is subtle. It just smells like Soap.
Fragrances: Wonderwood, Pal Zileri Sartoriale for autumn/winter; Rocky Mountain Wood for spring/summer.

Gotta have that wood smell all year long :^)

I don't know. That's some pretty mediocre still-in-highschool mallscent stuff if you ask me. Should be able to find Versace Pour Homme or L'Eau d'Issey for cheap online if he's looking for that sort of standard slightly aquatic citrus thing.

Midnight in Paris

You can get the 125 ml version for less than 40 $. I blind bought it and never regreted it

It's my signature scent, you can wear it whenever and women love it.

but they appear to a smaller audience and are produced on a smaller scale than, say, Chanel No 5
thus making them more difficult to get

>> No.8987995

>>8987968

They're more expensive, but hardly difficult to get a hold off if you can stomach the price and shipping costs. Vintage perfumes are something else entirely, those are perfumes that have gone out of production or been reformulated. They pop up on ebay, or on sites like fragrancex once in a while when they find old stock sitting somewhere, and usually go for multiple times their original price.

Anyone have Bleu de Chanel?

I'm considering it for nightwear. I've got one of those sample cardthings and I reallly like the scent, but it's a bit strong. May just be the card thing though. Anyone recommend it?

I wear DSquared2 He Wood during the day.

>Wonderwood.
It's wood in a bottle. Next to no sweetness, some pepper. I love it and get compliments but it's not for everyone.

>> No.8988045

>>8988005

I've sampled both the EDT and the EDP and neither really speak to me. I want something to jump out a me, but Bleu just feels like a hodgepodge of notes. Seems like something one could use as a signature scent though as it was kind of versatile. Of the two I'd say the EDP struck me as the most suited for night wear as it was deeper and sweeter. I don't own it though, so this is on the basis of one sampling/comparison.

bleu de channel becomes powdery on acid skin and lose its first notes quickly. try it on a few days and try moderate exercise. the sweat may wash it off.

i have platinum egoiste 2 and its stronger signature scent that fits a fresh douche adequately imo.

chanel has also allure sports series that deserve to be looked into.

>Burberry Brit Rythym

Don't buy shitty flankers that have nothing to do with the original and are only trying to cash in on a name. It's gotten shit reviews and is apparently a sweet synthetic mess instead of the chocolaty wood and leather combo the marketing portrays it as.

If you're looking for a deep fragrance with leather and wood, go check out Fahrenheit or Gucci pour Homme (if you can find it). If you're more interested in some kind of chocolate+leather thing Midnight in Paris which was mentioned earlier sort of has that vibe.

I went to the store today. I'm new to this so I smelled way too many fragrances in an attempt to see what the fuck I even like. One that stood out to me (probably because I got sprayed with it) is Burberry Touch. I liked it but people have pretty strong mixed opinions of it online. One of my friends, a girl, told me it wasn't very masculine to her, and some reviewers share the same sentiment. I don't think that bothers me much, though. Does anyone have any thoughts on it? Similar fragrances?

>> No.8991450

>>8990636

If you like it, you like it. It seems a bit boring to me, although I am a big fan of woody floral musks as a genre. I'd go back to the the store and compare it with Fahrenheit and Gucci Pour Homme II. Test them on your skin, not a strip of paper, and let them sit on you throughout the day so you can see how they develop.

>> No.8991457

>>8990636

(All three fragrances are WFM, with violet leaf as the dominant top note (likely the note that grabbed you)). Remember that Fahrenheit will be pretty smokey to start with, that may or may not be your thing.
